How did the Japanese make so many good films? Have they made anything special in 2010s?

How did the Japanese make so many good films? Have they made anything special in 2010s?

Speaking of Japanese cinema, what happened to this kid? I've seen him in a lot of Ozu and Kurosawa films. His imdb lists High and Low as his last film and I cant find any information on him on the net. Literally what happened? Is he still alive? did the yakuza get him?

Who is he in High and Low? The kid who gets kidnapped at the beginning? Also I was born but... kid actor had a bit of a career resurgence in the late 90`s

Yeah thats him, he's in it very breifly. His MUBI page says he even starred in a Shohei Imamura movie too. Its incredible how he was able to work with so many Japanese masters at such a young age. And interesting, I didnt know that about the I was born but..kid

Pretty fucked up but total kino.

>Have they made anything special in 2010s?
Yes

I´ve seen it. It was Pretty good. Also I´m very mixed on Fires on The Plain

true cuck kino

After the storm
The Long excuse
Shin Godzilla

>Also I´m very mixed on Fires on The Plain

why? to my mind that's like, an unquestionably great movie. one of the very best war movies.

...

It felt really untsukamoto to me. I think its his first non-urban film. Definetly need to rewatch it since it stuck to me.

I felt so bad for the father. No one should be cucked like that.

wait, they remade Fires on the Plain...? i was talkig about the kon ichikawa movie from 1959. wtf that's like remaking the godfather or something. fuck that.

Shinya Tsukamoto is a great filmmaker but its kinda odd to readapt a classic. Though I need to admit I've never seen the Ichikawa version.

Sion Sono is the worst.

Is this good? I noticed Michael Mann mentioned it in his ballot for Sight and Sound's 2012 greatest pictures poll.

OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT

Nice Japanese tiddies, tho

Oldboy and Ip Man

>tfw no qt yandere gf to feminize you

I watched Tetsuo: The Iron Man recently. Excellent body horror, fast paced, good soundtrack. Makes good use of the additional sensitivity of black and white film by keeping the shutter angle tight, to better match the stop motion/pixilation shots.

If you liked Videodrome + Akira + Eraserhead then you should watch this.

>Have they made anything special in 2010s?
Not really. All the talented Japanese artists are dying off and surprise surprise, legions of autistic otakus aren't a suitable replacement.

>listing Kikujiro as a worthwhile film
Fucking why, it's completely mediocre.

>including anime directors but no Mamuro Oshii
Who made this fucking pleb list

Pic related is good, as is "After The Storm" by the same director. The latter is quite the portray of modern Japanese culture, especially the sentiments towards men and their obligation towards their family. Copypasting what I wrote once:
>be japanese man
>wife divorces you out of the blue
>forced to pay 50,000 yen/month to see your son ONCE a month
>ex wife chastises you for not being a fatherly figure
>offer to see son every week
>ex wife knows you can't afford weekly visits, so declines, denying you the chance to be in your son's life
>ex wife gloats to your face that she is already sleeping with another man
>have to take such insults and succumb to the level of a cuckold else lose visiting privileges
>get constantly threatened with losing said privileges
>constantly working and at the risk of homelessness and all money goes to child support
>gets painted as the bad guy, both by his ex, his sister, and his mother
>accepts the title because he really believes he was unsuccessful in life and it's all his fault

Otherwise, I don't really follow Japanese film, and have yet to go through much of the classics from past.

>no Kanji Nakajima
>no Naomi Kawase

Miyazaki onward is pretty embarrassing. i'm specifically talking about this list. whoever was making it went full redditor at that point. Suicide Club is fucking garbage, fuck off

wtf, why would I watched that?

Underrated as fuck.

what is this from?

Onibaba (1964)

Are there any good yakuza movies?
Been considering Outrage

>read reviews about Japanese movies
>gradually remember names of directors
>go to library
>stare at the DVD box for half an hour
>watch capeshit instead
I have been doing this for literally ten years...

tried watching this, shit sucked. lesbians are gay

It's full blown softcore pornography. If you went into it with any intention other than jerking off, then you did it wrong.
Same with Blue is the Warmest Color.

i can't cum unless there's a dude

But there's always a dude when you jerk off.
That dude is you, user.

...

With the internet my understanding of Japanese movies have greatly improved
I have watched at least one trailer from half of directors listed in op's pic

Cannot last five minute into streaming High and Low though

>Same with Blue is the Warmest Color.
Those French cuties never cease to get me rock fucking hard.

Are we talking about a situation similar to the time Otacon cucked Huey with Huey's wife?
