What would you recommend as essential horror movies to watch for someone who barely saw any horror movies?

what would you recommend as essential horror movies to watch for someone who barely saw any horror movies?

The Exorcist
Children of the Corn

anons are going to recommend John Carpenter movies - they come across as really cornball now

Watching horror thw most important thing is to be alone, at night and watch it without pauses
I recomend ju on for maximum scare

Mouth of Madness holds up, at least. The Thing and Prince of Darkness are more fun at this point.

I like 'Event Horizon' it was pretty scary when I was a kid. I have seen it so many times now so I have no idea if it's ACTUALLY scary or not because it don't really surprise me. But it's the best sci-fi horror. Better than Aliens imo

Most of the so called "classics" of Horror are pretty shit to be quite honest

fuck this, atmosphere makes horror movies painful for me.

I never understand this about people. They will say "I watched x movie, and it wasn't scary!"

And then you find out you watched it during the day, with all the lights on, with volume really low. Like no shit you didn't find it scary.

>Aliens
really wished i'd watch this when i was younger, then i might be able to see why people love it so much

Both of those movies are shit though, amd Aliens is hardly horror.

>people that actually get scared by le jump scares

brainlets through and through

>2017
>not being a brainlet
fucking pleb, being a brainlet makes movies way more enjoyable.

you have a point there. ignorance is bliss

>for a movie to be scary you have to go out of your way to create external scares

I'M TELLING YOU BRO THIS MOVIE IS SCARY YOU JUST HAVE TO WATCH IT IN AN ABANDONED MENTAL HOSPITAL AT 3 AM BY YOURSELF

I watched Event Horizon for the first time this year and found it really scary, but I get easily spooked, so yeah. That said, it does have its cheesy bits which kinda take you out of the movie, but overall I think it holds up well as a sci-fi horror.

Movie goes to shit when the black dude rrturns

your environment absolutely does matter. is it a better experience to watch it on your phone in a brightly lit room or in a dark room with a big screen and good sound?

The Grudge
Alien
The Thing (1980s)

In The Mouth of Madness
Hellraiser
The Thing
Alien (1979)
Nightmare on Elm Street (the original not the one with Rorschach's actor)

Those should be decent enough for starters

Jaws
The Thing
Ju-on
Shutter

These, but also Halloween and The Exorcist.

>carpenter is cornball
>recommends children of the corn
lol kill yourself, numale.

This thread is fucking garbage.
Jaws? The Grudge/Ju-On?

fucking kek.

Yeah those are great ones too
>shitty meme jumpscare films
Back to plebbit with you

t. soyboy goytoy

>implying

hahaha

>Hellraiser
>Nightmare on Elm Street

Those are great... I havent seen the newest "Nightmare on Elm Street" film, but these all are great.

>virgin
lol

>nu-male
lmao

The Invisible Man

that's the same as virgin, my girl.
try again.

>try again
yeah, you like being called a nu-male don't you
shave the beard and get rid of the thick-rimmed glasses, bugman

The Thing
Evil Dead 1, 2, Remake
Army of Darkness
Alien, Aliens
Rosemary's Baby
Eraserhead
Saw 1
Cabin in the Woods
Exorcist
Psycho
The Witch
The Wailing
Texas Chainsaw 1
Halloween 1
The Ring/Ju-on (both are good)
The Descent
Blair Witch 1
28 days later
The Fly
Blue Velvet
You're Next
Scream 1
Brain Dead/Dead Alive
Gingersnaps
Shaun of the Dead (and Hot Fuzz but it's not horror)
Jeepers Creepers 1
Scanners
Krampus

Horror is a huge genre with a ton of subgenres. It's definitely possibly to love one type of horror movie and hate the others. I'm not a big fan of slashers for instance.

>gingersnaps
>blue velvet
>jeepers creepers
>krampus
>ju-on
>aliens
>eraserhead
>the fly
>brain dead/dead alive
>scanners
almost a good list.
no idea what the fuck you were thinking adding these films on a horror list though.

*essential horror list i meant.

Dont bother its not as good as with Robert Englund and Wes Craven around although Hayley wasnt super bad but the writing was stupid, if they do another i hope they bring Englund back assuming he doesnt die anytime soon
Eraserhead is basically body and surrealist horror

Are you saying Eraserhead isn't a horror movie or that's it's not an essential horror movie?

>this is considered good banter
lol

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari
Nosferatu (1922)
The Man Who Laughs
The Phantom of the Opera (1925)
Dracula (1931 Spanish version)
Frankenstein (1931)
The Invisible Man (1933)
King Kong (1933)
The Wolf Man (1941)
Dead of Night
The Thing from Another World
Creature from the Black Lagoon
Godzilla (1954)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
The Mummy (1959)

it's barely a horror film and no where near an essential horror film.
also
>blue velvet
>horror
the fuck?

thanks for the butthurt response all the same ;^)

>meme carrot face
>not hiding your butthurt
ahaha

I stand by The Fly and Eraserhead as essential body horror movies.

WTF THIS MOVIE SUCKED I WATCHED IT WHILE RIDING A ROLLER COASTER AND LISTENING TO MY BASS BOOSTED DUBSTEP BUT THAT DOESNT EFFECT ANYTHING

i recently watched Halloween, the whole Jason saga and started Freddy but it's kind of shit

any good slashers ? (not scream)

not really, slashers kinda suck

>slashers kinda suck

i tend to agree but it was enjoyable so far

does friday get much better than the first two films? i've seen nightmare on elm street 1 and that was leagues ahead. wasn't really that fussed about friday 1 and 2, but i'm at least looking forward to seeing jason with his iconic look.

not really it basically the same thing over and over
9th is one of the worst thing i've ever seen

Children of the corn wasn't scary when it came out.

>tfw she look like Lena Horn, but got more kids than children of the corn

damn, i'd assumed it'd be different by the time he gets his hockey mask. oh well, i'm not sure if i was really expecting much. might as well watch them all.

Sinister
Conjuring
VHS 1 2 and 3

A Tale of Two Sisters
