nah, just marketing... The only member of the band that actually perform in almost every song is Damon Albarn (Blur Singer), who eventually voices 2D, but anyways, 2D is not a representation of Albarn.

I don't think he has any musical skills so no. So far Damon has pretty succesfully avoided making any major mis-steps in his solo career though so I think letting him run amok in the studio is probably the best course of action.
