sell me on this show. I'm kind of a trekfag although I've only really seen TOS and TNG

I went from Star Trek to Stargate and I enjoyed it immensely. It's science fiction but it's a different kind of science fiction. It's like a mix between Star Trek and MASH. While the original film was very much an action adventure the series is more cerebral. It's military sci fi but contains themses of history, linguistics, philosophy, politics and science. The main (arguable) main character is an archaeologist.

The main antagonist of the series are a race of parasites called the Goa'Uld who are able to use a vast range of humanoid species as hosts. While the parasite is within the host the host's body is under total control of the parasite(they're sentient beings).

Que the film: 8,000BC in North Africa, a ship descends upon the desert. One of the last survivors of this race comes to Earth looking for a new host species and he finds it. This Goa'Uld takes on the persona of the Egyptian god Ra and rules over human slaves. The Goa'Uld both shaped Earth mythologies and used them to rule over humans. This is especially true in Egypt since throughout Egyptian history the Pharaohs had posed as gods. Since the Goa'Uld are parasites, they must acquire technology from other races. This is true of the titular entity of the series, the stargate. In short, the stargate is a device that is part of a network of other gates and is capable of forming a wormhole that connects to any other gate within the network. These wormholes dematerialise matter and send it as energy along subspace corridors until the matter is rematerialised by the other gate. Ra's human slaves rebel against him and succeed, buring the stargate, meaning that it is no longer possible to travel to Earth through the stargate as it's impossible for a wormhole to form in solid matter.

Jackson discovers that the symbols on the ring of the Stargate are coordinates and that the seventh symbol required to activate, the first six being three dimensional coordinates using constellations to find a point in space, is the point of origin.

The Goa'Uld in the time since have formed a large feudal interstellar state with humans transplanted from earth over thousands of years who worship them as gods.

Stargate gives a good opportunity to show different stages of human development on an anthropological level and also different civilisations

Stargate unlike a lot of science fiction presents the idea of a rational primitive man as opposed to backwards superstitious and "unenlightened" ancestors of modern humanity. This is a good video series on the topic:

Open the iris.

Yes sir! Iris One...Locked....un.

...

Goold?

...

...

we are receiving a gate confirmation code by SG-5 Sir! Shall we open the Iris?

*waits 20 seconds thinking"
*thumb thumb THUMB THUMB*

OPEN THE IRIS!

why were there no accidents in this show?

Doctor Jackson
I'm SGC

Gool?

The team get a signal back to say code accepted when they're going to open the iris, they don't just send the signal and run into the stargate

>no accidents
what?

i watch the first episode on hulu and for some reason got turn off by it. Is it worth investing time into it?

I watched this show religiously when i was 17/18

Should i rematch it ?

yes, the cast and the tech to fight the baddies grows.

Ill ask everyone, when did Stargate to you hit its stride

Season 1 can be pretty slow, it really finds its feet as it goes on

>Australian SG team attempts to go to the space-store.jpg

mid 3

though i really love the buildup to anubis in early s5, the show feels like it jumped way up in production values around then

The first 2 episodes are full of action and charm. if you don't like the comfiness of the first 2 episodes you won't like Stargate period.

"Help me! Help me..."

Episode 10 of Season 1, The Torment of Tantalus

when the ORI came into play

Woeful taste

Destiny was a great ship, nice aesthetic

this episode scared the shit out of me as a kid

the idea of being stuck within range of a black hole and living out your death for what you would perceive as an infinite length of time sounds horrific

I kinda miss that show desu

Season 2 really picked up. It felt like Stargate for the first time.

I still would prefer if SG1 or Atlantis come back but I wouldn't be against seeing Universe.

>it's a star goes black hole and suddenly has an insane increase in gravitational area

...

It was a cool ship. Neat method of refueling.

CLOSE THE IRIS NOW

Do you like series where the technobabble and problem solving in one episode isn't forgotten at the end of it? Have you ever wanted to watch a show that doesn't treat its audience like idiots? Would you like to see a show where an ayyy lmao buys a ticket to the Vagina Monologues because he thinks it will be about talking genitalia and is visibly disappointed when he learns that the show could not have been more falsely advertised?

If you answered yes to any or all of these, Stargate is the franchise for you!

Yes, as long as that was more than 5 years ago.

Gives time for nostalgia to mix properly with the stuff you forgot about.

+1.

Aside from Ming-Na I don't think anyone from the show is doing anything these days either. You could just make it an "X years later" to explain why certain crew weren't around any more too.

My only caveat would be that Lt. Hooters be immediately promoted to Major, get a larger part, and wear more revealing clothes.

During the second half the firt season. What always drawn me to SG was the fact that we had maybe for the first time a conflict between humans and aliens and humans were heavily leaning on the war gear that we actually have.
Ocassional gun porno - like demonstration of P90 against Jaffa power staff - was also great.

Comfy.

I wish they'd either make more or just tell us what was going to happen, with Destiny's mission and the pattern in the cosmis background radiation especially.

There are comic books continuing the story.

I've read the ones out so far but those are just comic books. As far as I know the writers of Universe haven't said that this was the story they were going to go with.

Universe has moments way too comfy for it to be canceled so fast.

YEEEHAW

>A Serpent guard, a Horus guard and a Setesh guard meet on a neutral planet.
>It is a tense moment.
>The Serpent guard’s eyes glow.
>The Horus guard’s beak glistens.
>The Setesh guard’s nose drips.

Destiny was a comfy ship

(Joke explanation: The helmet of the Serpent guard looks like a snake, the Horus guard looks like an eagle with a golden beak, the Setesh guard helmet looks kind of like the head of an aardvark with elongated jackal ears, clearly fictitious, but overall not dog-like.)
