the problem with his season 1 personality was that he was too nice and naive for the constant shitting on him by everyone and the universe that happens in this show to be particularly funny, it works better when he's more self aware and snarky, that way it's less one sided in it's meanness(besides Darwin works better as the innocent one anyways)

The S1 problem was not Gumbal's personality, it was the "universe". In S1 almost everyone was nice but the fucking universe itself was an asshole to Gumball. The hack writers overused the "Gumball is an unlucky boy" concept. It was fucking abuse. Nowadays Gumball has a similar problem. The writers overuse the "Gumball is a dick" and "Gumball is a faggot obsessed over someone" concepts to the point of making Gumball unlikeable.
