Storytime of Pain- Sonic 155

Who's ready to delve into the very pages of the same issue that started the downfall of this beloved comic series?

...

Haha, wow.

...

> you know what a fun kids' video game really needs? Character inappropriate levels of drama and pain

Why did you faggots enable this

I find it funny how they bring Tails and Fiona's ages when Geoffrey was like 20 when he was kissing a fifteen year old Sally.

People complain about the reboot but really, I preferred the new King to this sack of shit.

Oh my god I forgot about Sally's hair during this.
Nigga' I was like 12 when this shit came out. I just wanted more Red Sonic.

"That's right dearie, I didn't even know your father when I was told I had to marry him. You're actually lucky. Antoine isn't ten years older than you and you're done with middle school, that's more than I could say."

Well at least the rabbit's still cute.

Haha, the fuck Antoine thinkin'?

I do remember thinking this was cool at the time, since Antoine gets shit on constantly, but then we find out WHY he's acting like a douche later on.

...

>Storytime of Pain
Why does Sup Forums keep doing these?
Why not just read good comics?

Because we need to remember all the shitty times in order to enjoy the good.

...

>Concluded next issue.

Shit I forgot this was a two-parter.
...
Who wants to finish this?

Fuck it, I promised pain and we're getting pain.

Oh shit I wonder what Antoine's up to?

Now who could be Sonic talking to?

...

>SHE SHOULD BE WITH ME!
>I'LL SHOW HER BY SHOWING UP AT THE WEDDING AND ACT LIKE A FUCKING CHILD!

Oh shit what? Antoine's a bad dude?

Oh fuck what?!

Haha, caught in the act.

...

I find it hilarious that Sally is never given power at all in her Kingdom even though she's the only one who wants to fucking rule it and half her family are incapable of doing the job.

Elias face in that last panel is pretty funny though.
>"SONIC WHAT THE FUCK!?"

Alright time for some fight scenes!

Well that got solved easily.

Haha, wow no wonder there's so much incest porn of these two.

HAHAHAHAHA!
Fuck you Tails.

And that's it, the issues that got Sega to step in and put their foot down on Penders bullshit, get Ian into head writer position, and probably start Penders deeply rooted hate of the comic he worked on for so long.

>This
>Pain

>Not Sonic Live
>Not the Image crossover
>Not the editor-drawn filler issues
>Not the KAWAII ANIME period
>Not the abysmal and long Sonic Adventure adaptation
>Not the Princess Sally mini
>Not the religion, dating, drugs or Nazi arcs of Knuckles
>Not the GIANT PURPLE GORILLA STEALING A YO YO
>Not "The Original Freedom Fighters"
>Not the poorly written and drawn "Wolds Unite" crossover
>Not "HE HURTS ME BECAUSE HE LOVES ME"
>Not the FOURTEEN ISSUE ALTERNATE FUTURE STORY WHERE *NOTHING* HAPPENS
>Not even something shitty but goofy like Tails' destiny

>The mediocre issue that only exists to retcon a bunch of shit real quick is a "storytime of pain."

user. I don't think you know what pain is.

Thanks user, you have any plans to storytime some of the other bad Sonic comics?

>Because we need to remember all the shitty times in order to enjoy the good.
Also it's fun to collectively cringe at some real shit sometimes.

How long until they announce the cancellation?

Yeah but this had the longest reaching in terms of effects on the actual series itself. Without 155's cover Sega would have probably waited longer to step in, Ian might not have started to turn the comic around when he did, and we probably would've had to deal with at least another 30 issues of Pender's idea of drama and romance.
I'll probably do it some time this weekend, with cancellation on the horizon and all.
That too.
Probably in the next three months.

> don't tell Tails, he'd be crushed

That cover just tells me this is gonna be painful.

...

>the issues that got Sega to step in and put their foot down on Penders bullshit

I love this meme, because it makes absolutely no sense.

First, Ken willingly stopped working for Archie according to everyone involved. According to the man himself, (although he wasn't as blunt about it) he was butthurt that he got shoved off main writer for a newbie. Given it was the third time in ten years he was given the reigns for several months only to have them snatched back the second someone else showed interest in taking the slot, his fruatration is understandable.

Second, Ken isn't even behind this story's concept and tone. The former editor, Justin Gabrie, sold the company YEARS worth of inventory stories under a pen name, which led to his immediate firing and the promotion of his assistant Mike Pellerito to editor. Pellerito let Bollers' final story of consequence (Return to Angel Island) run its course and gave Ken a few extra issues to wrap up MXYL, but from 145-170 each issue was mostly burning through Gabrie's stories while Mike was working with a new intern (Ian) to sort out continuity and soft relaunch the book. As a result, up until 171 the non-inventory content was Mike giving guidelines on cleaning up continuity problems and creating flash in the pan stories to boost sales and mask the inventory burn. So Ken gets told he has to write "4 issues of Sonic v Shadow v Metal Sonic" or "We need to retcon out Antoine's characterization and get over this Sally engagement subplot." The execution is his fault, but not the idea.

Third, Ken has nothing to do with the cover. That's between the artist and the editor.

Cont.

And finally, the idea that this "drew Sega's attention" is rumor mongering bullshit based on a misunderstanding of how they handle their brand. Ian's said King Sonic crying early in his run had to be edited because it went against Sega's policies on how Sonic can be depicted. A bunch of retards assumed this MUST have meant Sega saw 155's cover, freaked out, and banned Sonic from crying ever again. Problem is the rule is about Sonic sobbing and losing composure, not crying. He cries more in the edited issue than he does on 155's cover. Ian was working at Archie when 155 was published; he would have known about a sudden rule change had it occurred and there wouldn't be a need to edit the panels in the first place.

Stop spreading this stupid meme. Penders is a cunt, but this is just bullshit that fans who refuse to actually research have propogated for years now.

I don't know why I even had to check if Penders was responsible for this.
I used to buy these growing up, I am so sorry.

Go to bed, Ken.

Okay Ken

>Sega would have probably waited longer to step in, Ian might not have started to turn the comic around when he did, and we probably would've had to deal with at least another 30 issues of Pender's idea of drama and romance.

All of this is wrong. Ian was already scheduled for 160 by the time Penders jumped ship, as they would already be working on the Metal Sonic Troopers storyline at the time (lead stories are written 3-5 months in advance). Ken had already inked a story for Sonic 17...2 or 3, I believe, which Ian wrote. Ian's promotion was because of his continuity work, which was going to be printed for the next ~10 issues after the MST arc.

Yes, he was scheduled to do that, then 155 hit shelves, Sega got mad, and like usual instead of just accepting that he would have to follow orders from the higher ups and that he wasn't going to be getting head writer position back after taking his break, which is what he was fucking doing and don't try to say he wasn't, he got pissy and jumped ship.

>Pointing out stupid meme bullshit based on Ian, Mike, Jon and Ken's own accounts of what was going on from 2004 to 2006.
>lol go to bed ken XD

Jesus Christ you people are insufferable morons.

Ian's been upfront in the past about exactly how he got his job, and it was his own merits, not Ken being chastized by Sega.
Jon's been about as loose lipped as you can get without breaking NDA, talking about the fights that happened (which were pretty much exclusively Bollers v Penders), straight up admitting that the Chacon stories were bulk inventory stories from a person who DOESN'T EXIST and that he even rewrote one with Mike, Ian AND Ken's accounts of how Mike operated and Ken's account of how it differed from Justin Gabrie...

I hate Ken as much as you, but spewing stupid ass rumors when the reality of the situation is right in front of you and even MORE damning to Ken (he cried and quit like a bitch within a year of having to actually do his fucking job) and good for Ian's image (he got his job by talent, not just luck) is just asinine.

That fucking FACE, Sally

GOD DAMN

Dreamcastzx1 would be happy.

>Sega got mad
You wanna source that? As far as I know that's only ever been a buzz from fans on message boards.

Jesus fuck this pointless drama

She immediately gives it up too, to support her husband as a wife always should and never talk back or have any real say on her own. They even talk about this multiple times in these shit runs, but then they always default to "it's just how things have to be and it can never change" like it's some sort of progressive statement that Sally strongly never does anything as long as a man is around.

Wasn't that the cover that made Sega realize "Holy shit, is this what the Sonic comic has turned into, someone fired the jackass who was responsible for this"

No, that's just a myth due to a lot of convenient coincidences. Sega did start paying a lot more attention to the comic around that time, Ken Penders did get fired around that time, and the comic saw massive improvements in editing, writing and art around that time. But Sega didn't have Ken fired, Ken quit after being demoted to inker by Mike Pellerito who had spent years cleaning up Justin Gabrie's messes and now wanted a rookie that helped him clean up those messes give a shot at writing the comic instead.
