The fact the ladybug is a frivolous thing to focus on was the point. She was raised to obsessively train towards a single evil purpose and the ladybug is the crack in her upbringing's facade that shows how there's a bigger world outside with lots of little wonders like that and how her mother was doing something fundamentally wrong by labeling it as a distraction and crushing it. It's a great way to begin to have her work past her psychotic cult childhood to have her notice Jack in the same position as her mom with the ladybug and letting it land and then fly away instead of killing it. Doing this lets her learn about how Jack's really the good guy by showing instead of telling. It's much better writing than what you would try.

I think it would have been cuter but not necessarily better. We already had an (innocent kid tags along with jack) episode last season. If emoji girl happened in season 4 in place of the baby and we saw her as a teen (alien lifespan yo) this season that tagged along after spending her life learning to protect others like the mysterious samurai that helped her all those years ago I'd like it. She'd make a good sidekick but the writing doesn't call for that kind of storyline with her.
