Showerthought: Where would "Cartoon Network" be if it had a different name?

If you think about it, the name "Cartoon Network" is likely to provoke kids, parents and cable companies (and their international equivalents) to see it as the "default" network for cartoons, hence it's the first channel people would turn of it they wanted to see cartoons but didn't know where to look.

Perhaps if it had a less generic name, it wouldn't have survived as many apocalypses.

If it had any other name it would had succumbed to live action shit by now

I think you're both right.

Cartoon Network didn't get to be where it is because of its name it got there from having good timing and providing a 24/7 cartoon feed when most other networks of the time (even Nickelodeon) only showed cartoons at certain times of day/week. It survived all the competitors popping up and dying not because of name structure, but because of name recognition.

Kids growing had no idea that a Nickelodeon was an early motion picture theater, but they associated the name with cartoons and kids entertainment because that's what the network was called.

To extend OP's train of thought, IMO those calling for Adult Swim to split from CN are insane for one simple reason: AS doesn't have "cartoon" in its name. It's just begging for it to be turned into a live-action shitshow.

Inb4 CN Real

Also AS doesn't make the money to justify it/Time Warner doesn't seem to care to expand the channel

AS wouldn't even be able to get away with it's surprise airings anymore

and it wouldn't be fair to say CN succumbed to it since it bombed within the year it was introduced and nearly killed the network

>nearly
>implying

Adult Swim's live action shows are a million times better than Cartoon Network's live action shows.

Are you implying it did or that it didn't effect CN at alli hope your baiting either way

AS is to plain weird to exist as it's own channel. The block exists to air more experimental creator driven shows that most normal executives wouldn't think twice about airing, even with it's recent trend of airing other channels more popular show's bump some rating.

If it did somehow become it's own channel it would be flooded with even less original content to fill in the time and as a means to stay afloat. It'd be 75% reruns of cancelled shows from FOX and Comedy Central.

And that would still pull in ratings.

That's not really an accomplishment.

>And that would still pull in ratings.
True but it'd also completely destroy what made the block so great in the first place.

Well, they tried hard to be "CN" for a while before.

Never seen any of CN's attempts at live action. But I've never enjoyed any of AS' attempts. I've even enjoyed their dumber shit like 12oz Mouse more.

>[AS] becomes its own separate channel
>brings in more old FOX and Comedy Central shows to fill in the gaps in time slots
>those end up getting the best ratings due to being more wildly known
>eventually it takes up more and more the timeslots leaving less and less for [AS]'s original shows
>eventually goes the way of G4 showing nothing but old reruns of other channel's shows

Shower thought: Why do the TVs at the Nickelodeon Hotel include Cartoon Network?

I never said Adult Swim's live action shit was good, just thank the lord you've never attempted to sit through one of Cartoon Network's live action shows.

G4 was an oddball. They didn't want to look nerdy even though that was the target demographic of the channel. The producers rejected video games even though that's what people were watching.

The channel was sadly killed by hubris. Thinking people wanted to watch Lost, Heroes, Cops, and Cheaters reruns.

Destroy Build Destroy was kind of easy to veg out to.

What was that shit where it was live action kids who uploaded themselves into some shitty CGI video game or fantasy world or whatever? In hindsight that would make good drunk viewing.

New CN toons aren't even in the same ballpark as the old Cartoon Cartoons, or even the later Toonami stuff like Samurai Jack and Megas XLR. I'd say CN Real succeeded in its mission of destroying CN.
