I think the opposite. They're hammering in the "just a regular plain human with problems" angle in seasons 5 and 6. The whole reincarnation angle is malarkey though I'll agree with that.

Finn is a terrible main character.
I dislike how he just seems useless. Jake could do everything they does together alone if he wanted to. Sure, he doesn't because that's not his character, but he could. Finn isn't actually needed to keep Ooo safe.
They also don't seem to want him to be useful for very long; he loses every magical item that has any value or ability. All of his best swords end up broken (Demon, Grass, Spirit Sword).
It's one of those accepted hidden rules, you know

That's why their a good duo. Jake could be mad powerful if he gave a shit but he doesn't, Finn has the pair's drive and willpower so he's the reason anything gets done in the first place. And Finn is only useless when the writers are lazy, show has demonstrated time and time again why he's effective. He's good at killing shit. Saying a main character is only good if they're teh strongest is the kind of shit that results in shonen being so derivative.
And it's not like the swords every actually did anything (beside the grass sword which is why it got killed so quick), they're all just a new coat of pain on Finn's primary tool.

The reincarnation should have been limited to humanoid life. It would have allowed Finn the opportunity to learn about his past lives and how they lived. Why they lived the way they did, and how they differ from each other.
It also would have made it so his origins are still interesting while being used in an interesting way, instead of just being 'I got bored of being immortal, I'll just kill myself'

honestly I'm more angry about the whole bait & switch that surrounded deaging PB, having her and Finn hook up, and then almost immediately throwing that out with Too Young(that episode made me hate Lemongrab for a long time, then his later episodes made me love him, then the episodes with him from Too Old onward made me hate him all over again), especially since it started the path that led to PB being unlikable for a while

They won't touch HW, the only reason they screwed FP is because they didn't like the effort they had to put in for Finn to have a girlfriend. He and Huntress left off on decent terms with no strings attached so they have no obligations with it therefore they won't fuck it up.
