In general the show toned down the stylization and made things more realistic. Obi-Wan and Yoda are also good examples of this.

The prequel era was always good. Regardless of the movies, the setting itself was great, and didn't need to be redeemed, it was just nice to see it get used well.
The sequel trilogy's setting is fundamentally shit. In all fairness though, the old EU's post RotJ setting was mostly irredeemably shit too.

Honestly I like parts of the PT. It's the assembled whole I have a problem with. But I do think the third movie almost makes up for the first two. They actually allowed Hayden to emote. Never got the way Lucas wanted him to speak considering his closest teachers were Obi-wan and Qui-gon. Those still had the calm and collected thing down rather than a lack of any emotion. Or worse. Being constantly sad and sounding unsure of yourself does not go well for a protagonist.
