Literally what the FUCK did I just watch?
None of Cool World's plot makes a lick of sense. Nifty animations though.

It's really not any good.

I wish Bakshi got to do his original vision. A soft-core porn version of Roger Rabbit.

A soft core porn HORROR version of Roger Rabbit.

Thats what happens when Kim Basinger signs on midway through and demands it becomes a film "she can show to kids".

Fun fact, Bakshi legit punched a guy over this.

It's a pretty simple plot. Part One:

1) There's a cartoon world parallel to the real world.
2) Frank was accidentally transported to the cartoon world by a scientist there who was trying to do the opposite (sending himself *out* of the cartoon world); the scientist ends up succeeding anyway and leaves the cartoon world; he also leaves behind a structure that lets movement between worlds happen (the spike)
3) Everyone rolls with it anyway and they make Frank a detective of the cartoon world.
4) Holli is a cartoon who wants to become real.
5) Holli appears to Jack, a cartoonist in prison for murdering the guy his wife cucked him with, under the pretense of being a drawing Jack came up with when in actuality she and the whole cartoon world existed long before Jack came into the picture.
6) Frank goes into the cartoon world and Jack warns him not to have sex with Holli but doesn't tell him why.
7) Jack has sex with her anyway and it's revealed the reason cartoons and real people aren't supposed to have sex is because it'll send both parties into indeterminate cartoon / real person states where they switch back and forth between the two.
8) Holli tells Jack about the spike she wants to use to permanently escape to the real world and live as a real person, but he doesn't give a shit about that plan, so she goes off on her own to take care of it herself.
9) Holli finds the scientist who built the spike, but he doesn't want to help her because the spike's dangerous and will have consequences beyond just getting Holli what she wants.
10) Frank confronts Holli and she kills him by pushing him off a building.
11) Holli uses the spike and turns everyone around her into cartoons.
12) Cartoon Jack gets the spike though and places it back, dooming Holli to go back to the cartoon world as a cartoon.

Part Two

13) At first Frank's wife is mourning his death, but then she learns Holli killed him while she was in cartoon form.
14) If a real person is killed by a cartoon they come back as a cartoon in the cartoon world.
15) Frank and his wife finally get to consummate their marriage because they're both cartoons now and won't suffer from the same problems that came up when Jack and Holli had sex.
16) At the same time they're having a happy ending, Holli is having a bad ending because she's now stuck in the cartoon world and on top of that has to deal with cartoon Jack living with her which she doesn't like because she was never in love with him and was only using him to fulfill her plan, and also because he was the guy who screwed up her plan.

So why didn't Frank just sudoku himself if the human-dies-becomes-toon thing is common knowledge?

Same reason why Jack was able to accurately depict another universe before he went there. Probably some kind of persona shit.

I specifically said you need to be killed by a cartoon for that to work. If Frank killed himself he'd be killed by a real person, not a cartoon.

>Thats what happens when Kim Basinger signs on midway through and demands it becomes a film "she can show to kids".
>and demands it becomes a film "she can show to kids".
>a film "she can show to kids".

I don't follow.

He was able to accurately depict the universe because Holli sent the ideas to him to trick him into thinking he came up with them himself so she'd have a chance at using him to escape into the real world.

Why didn't his wife kill him? Or his spider partner? He'd just come back as a toon. What's the downside?

>Literally what the FUCK did I just watch?

The result of a very messy production..

What was the original script? I like the highway/building art/music.

This is what you get when the studio takes over production.

His wife and his police partner probably wouldn't want to murder him just to test out a theory that they've never seen work in practice. It's not like cartoons and real people interact with each other on a regular basis, he was the sole oddity real person in the cartoon world prior to all the scheming Holli introduced.

Something about a Human fucking a toon woman who gives birth to a freak daughter bent on killing him. It was supposed to be a legit horror movie.

>It's not like cartoons and real people interact with each other on a regular basis
Don't they? I recall them mentioning that real people fall into coolworld all the time and then pop back out. Surely one or two of them would have died in the amidst the chaos and confusion.

youtube.com/watch?v=WB6kq9eEjYs

Imagine just the whole film being Wacky Races from hell + EUROBEAT INTENSIFIES

Even if it were true that they saw a human get killed by a cartoon and become a cartoon once (something that never happened in the movie and we have no evidence for), there's also the matter of how Frank might want to go back to living a normal life in the real world at some point. He can't now because he was killed and turned into a cartoon, but he still had that potential before Holli killed him.

Also why do you keep on trying to find a way to make that plot point seem bad? If you have to try this hard to question it then it probably isn't all that problematic.

His life a as a human was over. His mother was his connection to Earth and she died from his own fault, and like 50 years passed since he crossed over. Everyone that he would have known would have died, and working as law enforcement in a world that went to hell was his atonement for his guilt.

He had a lot of reason to prefer staying in the cartoon world, but it's still a big deal to destroy his ability to ever go back (short of using some other more dangerous method that could destroy the world in the process like Holli tried using).

You might really like living in Thailand for example, but that doesn't mean it'd be no big deal if someone eliminated your American citizenship / passport and forced you to stay there the rest of your life.

Maybe it was just a too big of a step that he was afraid to take. Maybe he was already content as he was and didn't want to change.

Plus if he is the sole policeman taking care of cases where real humans turn up in Cool World, then it is an advantage to be human. The other people would be normally freaked out as fuck from yet another nood trying to tell them what not to do, but probably less so from a real meat and flesh human.

Story?

That's some wild pussy.

Maybe he didn't knew exactly what kind of toon he'd come back as. There were quite a lot of fucked up figures in Cool World, and in a worst case scenario he could've come back in a form so ugly that his girlfriend would leave him for the spider.

I thought the original plot was supposed to revolve around a Toon/human mix child trying to kill his father for abandoning him.

Ya know there's a reason I always pick Holli over Jessica in those "would you rather" scenarios

I agree

Just watch NC's vid on it. Will tell you everything you need to know how this train-wreck became into being.

I remember when I first saw the teaser for this, my hype was at god levels that finally an animated movie for adults was made. Left the theater so confused and disappointed. Thank fucking god Suncoast Motion Picture started carrying anime soon after...

>studio decides to go with hollywood heartthrob Gabriel Byrne as the main character instead of newcoming nobody Brad Pitt

Both the soundtrack and the OST were great.
They even got David Bowie to contribute an original song.
youtube.com/watch?v=CxXmcNxzNks

I mean, Gabriel Byrne seems like a more believable underground comics guy than Brad Pitt.
Willem Dafoe should have been casted, though.

By the way, there were actually 2 comic projects based on Cool World. A 4-issue prequel and a special adaptation of the film.

Why the hell Holli wanted to be human? Toons are pretty much immortal and can do almost everything. So, what whas the point?

Looking at the comic adaptation and the SNES game, you can kinda tell that the whole 'Super Jack Deebs' thing was a late addition.
In these versions, Jack touching the Spike causes Holli to be killed and Jack to be transported somewhere else.
youtu.be/aoCDC422L9Q?t=2277

Holli was shown to be obsessed with human culture.

The video games had good music as well

I'd like to see an adaption of Bakeshi's original script.
Instead of the turd that vwas filmed.

Some perverts are just into 3DPD

Have you seen the speedrun?

Impressive.

>The concept of the film involved a cartoon and live action human having sex and conceiving a hybrid child who visits the real world to murder the father who abandoned her
>Bakshi states that Paramount Pictures "bought the idea in ten seconds"

I remember loving Cool World as a kid.

Now it just looks like a trainwreck.

Remember reading those some time ago, I liked how it expanded upon cool world a little and gave backstory of how Frank become a cop.

Funny because Cartoon Jack looks like a fucking god.

The movie sucks, but this music with thiese scenes is amazing.

Makes me wish that this thing was good.

I hate Bakshi's work; he's overall a hack and at best he just lacked talent and vision to bring his ideas to bear, but man, he really fucking didn't deserve to be put through the behind the scenes mess of Cool World. The execs completely rewrote his script and then forced him at gunpoint to animate the whole damn thing.

Honestly... There's an episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 where at the end the robots, completely dissatisfied with the ending of the film that just watched, just rattle off a bunch of increasingly vapid and crazy ideas of where the plot could have gone instead.

THAT is what happened with the Cool World plot rewrite.

None of it makes any sense; the rules about how toons and real people can (or should not) interact are made up on the spot from some story committee playing Round Robin, and the plot twists all feel like the nexty guy in the writer's line just kept trying to one-up the last crazy thing the previous guy did. Poor Bakshi had to work around all this shit with his sub par talent, you add in the dipshit dirty joke mentality, and you get a giant cluster fuck mess.

Though to be honest, even if Backshi had carte blanche to do whatever he wanted, I can't imagine the film would have been stellar.

>Holli taking the spike turns her back into a cartoon
>Seemingly doesn't care
This plot may be simple to you but the movie does not present it simply.
