Research suggests that play when animals (or mammals at least) are young is what allows them to know what to do, and even then, young and inexperienced mammals often have trouble. Studies show that when rats are raised alone or with rats of the same sex (?), they don't exhibit correct sexual behavior in adulthood. And of course, humans are far more complicated.
