Latino Character >ay ese, ese, ese, hermano ese, how chu doin mayne?
Native American character >Hello White Man, I am Runs-Quietly-At-Night-To-Avoid-Bears-And-Other-Predators. Do you need me to use my spirit powers, that I obviously have, in order to be saved from your problems?
Why does this always happen? The less commonly represented group is always defined by their race, as if they have no other interests aside from their identity. The more we see characters who don't look like us, the more we see them as people, not as archetypes. Lets talk about non stereotypical characters!
might just be a reflection of reality. People have no interest in me as a person but they will completely buy all the "native" bullshit I peddle to gauge their reactions.
Owen Adams
No one would care about natives if it wasn't for spirit power
Nathan Brooks
well niggers in media used to all be cool negro guys but now are more normal.
Samuel Sanchez
Because if you do a Native American character that doesn't have obvious Lakota/Cherokee/Cheyenne/Chippewa/Pueblo/whatever ethnic traits, then it will be assumed to just be a Mexican.
Nicholas Adams
sad but true
Jaxon King
Maybe they're just trying to be polite (and failing).
Brody Morgan
because modern native americans don't exist? Black people got some culture of their own, native americans still seem to live in tents, have long hair and wear blankets
Jeremiah Kelly
Native americans are literally just slavs in all but blood.
I live next to a reservation and would like to personally tell you that you're full of shit and should leave your house and go outside sometime.
Liam Howard
not everyone on this fucking planet lives in murrica I didn't even know native americans still existed if it wasn't for that Dakota Pipeline shit that went down
Ayden Baker
i dont care cuz im latino, how about if we make some hard caliente love.
take care some bastard childrens and join a gang cuz thats what we do.
i dont forget the tacos...
Brody James
What makes the red man red, Sup Forums?
Joshua Sanders
The color of his skin. That's a fucking dumb question.
Xavier Young
I miss Equinox. Or rather, I wish Equinox had a chance to be in something else after Justice League United.
And yes, I know she's Canadian, not American, but where the fuck else am I gonna get a chance to bring her up?
Ryan Cox
I thought about it and don't get it. Please elaborate.
Gabriel Reyes
People can complain about representation all they want, but when this guy is the only Native character, and race swapped from a white guy originally, to show up in a superhero movie, it says a lot. Wonder Woman has a native guy appearing in it but according to the leaks, it apparently a small role and he doesn't do much.
Evan Wright
This isn't just restricted to ethnicity.
Essentially, the more foreign you are to the average American, the more likely you are to be a stereotype.
Russian? COMRADE VODKA MAN OF STEEL BIG GUY, SECOND NAME PROBABLY RASPUTIN.
It's just easier for bad writers to do this. It happens with locations, too. Set something in Ireland and it'll all be pastoral fields and country roads and hilly pastures. Set something in Germany and it'll look like a scenic town built by the Seven fucking Dwarves. Americans aren't really familiar with anywhere but America, and it's easier to fall back on what you know from old cartoons and random stereotypes than to actually do any research.
Nathaniel Hall
>Set something in Germany and it'll look like a scenic town built by the Seven fucking Dwarves
>set something in Germany and nazi nazi nazi nazi nazi nazi
ftfy
Christopher Nguyen
It took blacks a while before whitey made them more than "wat up muggafugga".
And a lot of icons helped, Eddie Murphy, Michael Jackson, Bill Cosby, etc. they all helped to show white people in the 70s+ that blacks are actually people. Eventually the steriotypes died down. Latinos and Mongols aren't quite there yet.
Jaxson Price
>It took blacks a while before whitey made them more than
>Yas suh, I be gett'n dat fo yah rie nah
Charles Martin
I mean the perseption changed, I didn't say stereotypes stoped.
Your average Ghetto nigger is as much of a nigger as he was in the 60s.
Michael Miller
This is accurate. I am not Mexican and none of my family is Mexican and I'm actually a Coastal Salish which is sort of in the opposite direction of Mexico, but people THINK I'm Mexican all the freakin' time. It's like how white people think people from India look middle-Eastern somehow.
Christopher Baker
Dunno, I'm really more of a tannish. Don't even have a weird name or anything, though that'a kinda cause names don't mean the same thing in Salish language or so I was told.
Julian Baker
I mean there was a long period of time before blacks in movies were anything but borderline retarded docile servants. They had to work up to ghetto stereotype.
Justin Perry
At least other brown people started higher, Mexicans with Sombrero Taco Tequila is better than monkey butler. And both are better than le bomb man from Mudslimes.
Grayson Mitchell
I really think the first middle eastern person I can remember from a movie was the terrorist from "True Lies".
Jaxon Smith
I genuinely mean no offense, but can you even really CALL white people "white people"? Coastal Salish integrated fairly early didn't they? Less bloody massacres by famous American military generals and no Trails of Tears?
Jordan Hall
People are just to afraid to call bullshit on it and get called a racist/insensitive.
Jose Thompson
>Natives spiritposting into Sup Forums to trick the White Man into thinking they don't have mystical powers I am onto you!
Isaac King
do native americans still exist?
Cooper Adams
do you get triggered by native american stereotypes in media?
Jack Davis
We did, but we still have a noticeably more swarthy complextion in most cases. Like I said, I'm tanned enough to be frequently mistaken for Mexican and once by an almost unbelievably stupid redneck in Tacoma to be a Middle-easterner.
Adrian Morris
Why, yes, yes they do.
Landon Lewis
I feel like I should laugh at how silly this question is but it actually just makes me depressed.
Gavin Evans
>Russian? COMRADE VODKA MAN OF STEEL BIG GUY, SECOND NAME PROBABLY RASPUTIN. And what exactly is inaccurate about this?
Connor Morris
White's are just jealous that we don't have inherent mystical/spiritual powers as a cultural heritage.
Jack Cox
WHITE MAN FEAR THE SPIRIT-SOUL POWER OF WINDOWS 10!! Yes. Hah. No. See, it's not like we're all one culture or anything. Example; Coastal Salish did the totem pole art thing, but a lot of the Native cultures that are portrayed in the media didn't really do that at all. We mostly fished and traded and owned land exactly like white settlers did, so we sort of had more in common then say, Apache or Iroiqoius Confederacy tribes did. We also didn't really preserve our language because a lot of it has to do with names and you'd pick different names when you got different jobs in the tribe or so I hear, so we ended up adopting Christian names cause it was easier to make white folks understand us if we just had the one. I've MET a few guys on reservations in Arizona, and I didn't like them much. They honestly DID frequently have crappy jobs and fit into dumb stereotypes a lot.
Meanwhile I get free healthcare, good education, decent college, and a job from MY tribal affiliation.
Gabriel Brooks
Well, mexicans are native americans. Just less of the tomahawk bow and arrow ones, and more of the temple heart ripping ones.
Isaiah Harris
You just have to be patient and wait for Disney to get around to making their live action version of Pocahontas. That's when you need to make your push for proper and equal representation. Maybe they'll make Nakoma a lesbian.
James Howard
About HALF of Mexicans are Native. The other half are Europeans. Which I guess is a way larger ratio then up here, but I dunno, maybe Spanish guys like fucking way more then British people did?
Wyatt Davis
>implying Disney will ever touch Pocahontas again
Daniel Morgan
>less of the tomahawk bow and arrow ones, and more of the temple heart ripping ones.
And suddenly I found myself supporting Trump.
Chase Edwards
I'd touch her again.
Adam Ward
Look at that picture and tell me that it was racist of Columbus to think they where Indians. I fucking dare you!
Oliver Watson
There's always American Eagle. Bad ass, Take no crap attitude, and his powers aren't magical at all. Too bad no one at Marvel remembers he exists
Nolan Nelson
Don't lie, you were a meme loving fuck from the beggining
David Gonzalez
you sound interesting, I wish I was interesting
Zachary Rivera
Indians from India are a lot more darker. They also dressed differently and spoke differently, but Columbus probably never met an actual Indian before.
Jackson Young
Well, they are indians, just not the one he was looking for.
Kayden Hill
Fun fact. In 1995, this guy's backstory was "history professor who can do magic because he studied"
In 2011, his backstory is "Has been alive since the white man came and just lives on the reservation doing what spirit animals tell him to do"
Colton Campbell
>Just less of the tomahawk bow and arrow ones, and more of the temple heart ripping ones. >temple heart ripping ones became the beheading ones Mexico jus never had a chance of not being a shithole, had it?
Jose Peterson
We don't look alike dude. Red is not the same thing is brown, and straight is not the same thing as curly. Colombus was just a ridiculous idiot. I remember when he showed up in that one issue and beat the fuck out of Bullseye. I like it when comics show that "popular" and "well-known" is not the same thing as "powerful" and "competent". Interesting isn't hard to be. You just need to not be boring. I mean; my name is Ben. That's a fucking boring name. More to it then that. Like for example, did you know that Aztec culture had been on the DECLINE for the last hundred years when the Spanish arrived? A huge plague and cut through them (and much of the other North American people's) and really caused a lot of problems. Since their religion said stuff like "kill people to appease the gods when shit gets rough", they kept DOING it.
Adam Howard
I prefer the heart ripping. I mean beheading, anyone can do that, hell, even the french can do it. But going kalima on someone's ass, that takes style.
Ethan Wilson
>Look white >Have Aztec, Cuban, Scotish, Japanese, and Spaniard ancestry >tfw Apparently my grandpa inherited a genuine Conquistador sword from his grandpa, but it's either somewhere in Cuba, stolen, sold to someone else, or nonexistent
Justin Thompson
I wonder if the whole "spirit animal" thing and native dress style, is sort of the same to them as "magical runes" and looking like a Viking, are to me as a Scandinavian. I don't really mind it, I honestly find it hilarious every time it gets brought up.
Bentley Morris
I inherited a genuine gun that was used on Japanese people, but it doesn't work anymore. Or maybe it does, I dunno.
Colton Morris
I can barely remember the story to UMK3, but I'm almost positive that's bullshit.
Hudson Gonzalez
If you think it's silly and ridiculous and it makes you shake your head and think "fuckin' Americans man" in a not-condescending but vaguely find way, then yes, it is exactly like that.
Though it's weird for me thinking that, because being both largely Caucasian and Native mixed, I'm like a Double American.
Dylan Garcia
stereotypes happen as a way to describe cultures
Jace Perry
Honestly I was one of the people that didn't and still don't give a fuck either way. I fall into that category of people that doesn't trust career politicians or businessmen on principle. And those are the only types that run for president anyway.I voted for Jill Stien Yes I think her views on inoculations are crazy.
Joseph King
Didn't the other tribes also hated the guts of the Aztecs because of the whole sacrifice thing and jumped at the first chance they got to stick it to them when the Spaniards arrived?
Jonathan Wood
There's also Portal, aka Charles Little Sky. He's a Mutant that can open up portals to other places like America Chavez, and he also has a knock off version of Darkhawk's suit that has all his tech. No Magic to be found. Why don't we have a solo for this guy instead of Chavez again? Or at least a team up? anything would be better that Chavez
Jordan Smith
, It's funny to think of, but Native stuff was "cool" in the 90's and you saw lots of it in TV and comics and shit like that. It was mostly the Southwestern tribal reservation-type stuff mind you, but during that period they showed up a bunch on TV and video games and comic books.
Juan Reyes
Good to know that I'm not the only one who can see the funny side in such things. Also, >Double American Sounds like the name to a shitty, but funny action movie.
Levi Ward
Not the sacrifice thing, but because Aztecs even when they were more mellow were a very expansionist and aggressive tribal group. They had a whole warrior culture thing going on, and warrior cultures love to find reasons to get their war on.
I think that's kinda why Americans ostracize their own military guys actually; getting the war on is expensive and time-consuming (especially in modern day), so if you treat soldiers like disposable garbage and replace them as often as possible and don't give them good jobs or health care then they form their own little sub-culture by reflex, and sub-cultures are easy to safely ignore. I notice other modern cultures where military service large, common, and is more tightly integrated with everyone else in society tend to be a little bit more aggressive. Israel, for example.
Xavier Davis
The nose and eyes are too different
Jason Cox
I would have thought he was a ninja if it wasn't for his name.
Charles Butler
He was going to be in Occupy Avengers, but was swapped for Red Wolf because Editorial went "All Natives are the same. Push this guy".
Xavier Stewart
>Watching a 50's era western >"Da comanchees r atacken" >"Da apachees r atacken" >"Deys takin our wimmin n chillun" >"Da injuns r scalpen our soljurs" >"AIAIAIAIAIAIAIAIAIAIAI"
Nathan Ross
>Good to know that I'm not the only one who can see the funny side in such things. I'm sure SOME people get offended, just not me. >Sounds like the name to a shitty, but funny action movie. I know, right? Red Wolf was cool and decently written, but American Eagle was WAY cooler.
Connor Hill
Funny thing; the 1950's and 1960's were when the USA was at it's greatest economic, technological, and political power, but you really only ever benfitted from it if you were white and a significant portion of the country was STILL not.
It was just easier to ignore us because television was brand new and shit.
John Martin
What are all these attack helicopters doing in a 50's western?
Nathan Robinson
Man of Bats was pretty good in Morrison's Bat Epic. It really helped that he knew how to write an activist character without them being preachy, probably since his dad was one.
I enjoyed 52 Superchief's dickassery.
I know Rainmaker exists but know jack about her.
Jack Bell
The gods told the aztecs that if they changed their name, they would one day rule the world and that basically everyone on the planet existed to serve them. You can see why these rubbed other people the wrong way.
Dominic Hill
As a European is astonished me to learn how poor some of America is. Some of it looks like the kind of slums that Dickens or Orwell would write about.
Hunter Brooks
> The less commonly represented group is always defined by their race, as if they have no other interests aside from their identity
Because it's the only way to make them interesting! Other than that, they're just some guy. And even so, modern Natives LOVE to still role play as their ancestors. They're into apparently.
Yeah take away the veneer of spirit-hunter-warrior-native and what you're left with is someone people who's, on the surface, no different than a Mexican. (The way they look I mean.)
So if anything, the comic giving them native decor is just a way to tell the reader that's who they are.
Julian Morales
Look at fucking Detroit. It baffles me that such a place can even exist in a first world nation.
Landon Smith
Also,
>Wah people only judge me by my cultural stereotype!
BUT
>I want people to acknowledge I'm a special "native" minority! Huh, I guess I'll dress in a headdress so they know!
This is their fucking problem. They want to have their cake and devour it too.
Justin Kelly
America is weird in that they both worship and despise their soldiers. Their culture glorifies the soldier in movies and games at the same time that the public and government at best ignore or at worst consider them criminals. Israel is a completely different beast in that they are the one kike guy in a sea of Muslims that would like nothing better than to see then shoaned again, so they don't really have any other choice but to support their troops.
Cooper Rogers
That's what I mean. I have a theory that empires benefit those who run the country most, those who run the colony second, and even the subjects get a better deal than the domestic populace. Not sure if this is scientifically or historically proven, but it always seems that way to me.
Look at Britain before and after the collapse of the empire at Suez. >Welp, no more empire, time to implement socialist healthcare
Jeremiah Hernandez
A lot of the impetus for the NHS was how dissatisfied everyone was that the community attitude of the WW1 Home Front collapsed when the war actually ended.
Landon Clark
Or maybe it's because Injuns were historically moved onto reservations by liberals in hopes that their culture and way of life and racial distinctiveness would be preserved. And the fact that 90% of American citizens were white, making it easy to ignore those other guys.
>as a middle class Northwestern European I'm......
Please kill yourself if you don't think poverty exists in the EU.
Gee user it's almost like instead of doing what the black radicals in Atlanta did and guaranteeing that cops would do their job and protect white property and not tax the whites too much the black radicals in Detroit said "WE MAYOR NOW" and then all the white people moved a few miles out to the suburbs where they couldn't be taxed.
Thomas Lopez
>I know Rainmaker exists but know jack about her. Sarah Rainmaker is a teenage bisexual exhibitionistic Native American version of Storm with the same powers and I would bury my cock in every hole she has. Hey, we don't complain about Manifest Destiny do we? Oh wait, no. That actually sucked for a lot of Natives. Never mind, carry on. Evidence points to America slowly but steadily declining since the 1970's in many ways, largely due to changing economic situations that the size of the country makes it difficult to adapt to and the problems of actually enacting wide-spread change (beneficial or otherwise) in a government system that allows states to ignore the law and tie it up in courts for eternity out of sheer stubbornness and traditionalism. Ironically it's the fault of the US itself why this happened and not "immigrants" or whatever; we spread capitalism everywhere and it turns out smaller counties are better at adapting to it faster then we did. I think the reason it's easier to blame immigrants and minorities is just visibility; you didn't "see" them back during this country's glory days, but since everyone saw their country purely through the radio or television (neither of which really talked much about minorities at the time) a lot of folks don't realize that the number of non-white citizens has only actually really GROWN in very recent years and was fairly stable and consistency large for decades before that.
Which again, is the fault of white folks because if they didn't want tons of black people here they probably shouldn't have brought them here in the first place. Been to Detroit. It's actually somehow worse then RoboCop. It's fascinatingly surreal.
Eli Phillips
>Coastal Salish Hmm? Nootka? Hmm?
James Jackson
I still remember that Top Gear episode where they go in the aftermath of Katrina a year later and it's as if it was only last week.
Landon Green
Warpath was in one of the Prequel Trilogy X-Men movies.
Brandon Gonzalez
I've been all around Eastern Europe, and the desolation of the American slum is something totally its own. Even the difference between a shack made of brick in some post-Soviet shithole is above the corrugated iron shanty town you'd expect to see in Africa.
Besides, you should not have such comparisons being made if you're the lone global super power with enough economic and military might to destroy any nation or continent in days.
Thomas Allen
>being a minority is interesting
The fact you think this is why you're not interesting. You're one of those white people who takes no pride in your ancestors and just bitches about being a "boring white person" when you probably have relatives who stormed Japan/Europe during WWII and lived in America during the depression and such.
Connor Bailey
You mean
>Black Character >Hello I am Black Character
Hudson Wood
>Or maybe it's because Injuns were historically moved onto reservations by liberals in hopes that their culture and way of life and racial distinctiveness would be preserved. And the fact that 90% of American citizens were white, making it easy to ignore those other guys. Firstly, we're not all on reservations. Secondly, it wasn't actually 90%, more like 70% when you add up that all the minorities adding up to nearly 21 million of then-population around 150 million. It's just we had no TV presence so it was harder to "see" us. But yeah, liberals moved us around a lot. Generally either side did not do us much good. I still vote liberal because as my dear old grandad used to say "I sure as shit aren't rich enough to afford voting Republican".
Jackson Morales
8% of the voting population is comprised of veterans. It is impossible to "ignore" soldiers. It is possible to have a horribly run bureaucracy that mismanages resources and inconveniences tens of millions of servicemen and ex-servicemen.
Joshua Campbell
What about a Native American character in a superhero series who is just a powerless badass with guns? I bet even if he didn't have racial hippy spiritual powers or shit most comics would still make him use a bow instead of guns just because
Anyone ever read it? Is it just a Conan knock off?
Brayden Mitchell
The only people who whine about their stereotypes are the ones who don't know how it feels to not have any stereotypes. >Native American wearing Yank colours and patterns Isn't it kind of ironic?
Xavier Rogers
To be fair, Ireland does have a metric fuckton of country roads and hilly pastures.
Jose Howard
Snohomish, actually. I know that too. My grandpa served. Neeeever shuts up about it either, Jesus Christ. >Isn't it kind of ironic? Why not? They're American colors, aren't they?
Brody Sanders
>Secondly, it wasn't actually 90%, more like 70% when you add up that all the minorities adding up to nearly 21 million of then-population around 150 million.
You're literally disproven by the official Census data and it baffles me as to why anyone would just pull numbers out of their asses when we have all this tallied and written down for decades.
And anyone with half a brain knows not all indians are on reservations, but at the time most were and the fact that reservations were treated as sovereign governments and generally received little attention from the federal government is considered a reason for long term poverty. The trade off is that full integration into white society would have brought prosperity but also total death of culture and race for the indians which was unacceptable to racial egalitarians who viewed the indians and other minorities as noble peoples maligned by racists. For the racists keeping indians on the reservations ensured no possibility of racemixing.
