This one is actually easily explained. The movie came out in the early 90s. So about ten years ago all of the kids who watched it and grew up with it when it originally came out were now in the teenage years, ready to spend their money on merch they thought defined them.
Retailers such as Hot Topic and junk realized this and capitalized it, churning out tons of nostalgia merch for the teens and young adults. Then they all grew up so now its dying down again.
