Correct. I believe he figured they try the basement first (since that's what they tried first earlier). Even if he had his shoes on, the trap would still alert Kevin to where he is since he would be able to hear the bulbs break (which may have been his original intention).
I think Robot Chicken did a bit like that. It's pretty clear this movie isn't 100% based in reality but I also appreciate your nitpick.
