Didn't know where else to ask, I'm posting here since it's the only place on Sup Forums where I've seen audio plays discussed (well, except for Sup Forums, but presumably they only know japanese ones).
Aside from Big Finish and other /who/-related things, are there any audio plays you would recommend? I'm especially interested in sci-fi and fantasy, but it can be anything as long as it's good.

ever hear of r/gonewildaudio?

It's not exactly a play but Chris Barrie reading the first two Red Dwarf books is well worth a listen.

The old radio series "X Minus One" is pretty decent, short sci-fi stories often with a Twilight Zone-esque twist.

I'm a big fan of the medium in general, not just Big Finish. BBC Radio often puts together good audio plays, sometimes with fairly famous actors too. Some particularly good Neil Gaiman adaptations in that vein. His Dark Materials too. John Le Carre's Smiley novels. Some good Terry Pratchet ones. Neuromancer has a radio play series from decades back. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy radio play series is the original and GOAT. I know you said you didn't want Big Finish recs but just in case you weren't aware, they do some real kino stuff in their Classics range that's adapting classic fiction instead of Who stuff, I highly recommend it, for the SF side you might like the adaptations of HG Wells stories. Not BF but there are good radio play versions of Dune, Brave New World, of course there's the famous War of the Worlds broadcast too, etc.
Also good radio play adaptations of Tolkien's stuff. Speaking of LOTR, there's a particular project I really like that's kind of a hybrid between an audiobook audioplay, an online dude called Phil Dragash made this amazing adaptation of LOTR where he melds the movie trilogy's excellent music as well as things like sound effects with the unabrdiged text of the novel. Available here mediafire.com/folder/cjjdiknzeieol,6jmo2c5q9vbll,jdmyib22aeqpm/shared not sure if ABB has them. YouTube sometimes has it up. It's difficult to describe, but works incredibly well. Best of both worlds of the book and movies.
Loads to enjoy!
There's also radio play versions of the Star Wars OT, funnily enough. Keys into some of its influences interestingly.

drpoo

Hitchhikers Guide? It's alright if you're into randumb humour.

I'm thinking of writing a letter to Parliament. I'll wait until the election is done with so I know who to address it to, of course, but it should be someone of great importance, possibly the PM themself. I will make sure to outline the problem we are facing here and that I expect and immediate and swift response. There is absolutely no reason that a community of intelligent, tolerant and like-minded individuals such as ourselves should endure such harassment. The words "doctor" and "poo" should hardly ever be in the same sentence, even, and just typing them out makes me white-knuckled with fury. I'm visibly shaking with fury, here, so I must apologise for my language. But the simple fact is that this cannot go on, and despite my best efforts it continues. I'm at my wit's end. This - I hesitate to refer to them as a 'person', for I can scarcely conceive of a human capable of such callousness - NEEDS to be stopped, no matter the cost.

DOTGEROO OOH OI! RETARDED

The War of the Worlds play that made people shoot at water towers and shit.

>no edition version

Oh I forgot, there's an American company called Graphic Audio that makes radio play adaptations of modern fantasy and sci fi novels. They're pretty well done. Tonnes of Brandon Sanderson stuff. Most are on the audiobook bay too.

Pic related are the non Who/LOTR/Sherlock audios I have set up for my family on their plex server back home, they've gone down very well.

It's the no edition edition. Also before you start whining about the lack of capitalisation, it was a stylistic choice.

>neo casually recommends a trillion audios

It's the Listen edition

Um, that's... interesting.

I'll check that out.

Thanks everyone, especially Neo for all that stuff, adaptations are fine, though I was wondering if there's some studio producing original audio stuff out there (Hitchhikers technically is originally audio, I suppose, but everyone knows the books).

Hey, they aren't going anywhere

For original stuff I think there are a lot of like "in character" podcasts, but yeah most proper radio plays are adaptations these days. You can always dive way way back and listen to some early serials but yeah, other than BF there aren't many specialised companies doing modern original audio stories. Still, there are a few series still going in the UK and America has a few podcast-y ones especially.

Nah m8, you're deffo upset about something. Why not share it with your /who/ buds? What ails you?

Is it just me, or do these generals get more and more boring? Is there a significant lack of people here these days? Cause it certainly feels that way.

based big finish classics listener

Well first loads of people left before Christmas. Then after Christmas a load of shitters came and I guess all the good users left again or at least decided to spend time with loved ones. It will normalise by the first week of January.

They're great, I tweet at Barnaby Edwards asking them to do more Shakespeares sometimes

TrannyDoc has ruined this show. I don't care how brilliant the actress is, it's the equivalent of the female Hamlet (too niche and only lasts a couple of performances)
Nu-who will go into indefinite hiatus at the end of 2018

I do hope so. I stick around hoping for some drama, or something funny, or at least to have a discussion about something actually relating to Doctor Who, but there's been next to none of that recently.

Suggestions for new composer, anyone?

Time for a new thread.

>Nu-who will go into indefinite hiatus at the end of 2018
it won't, the BBC already have it on contract for a few more years

I predict 2023 for earliest for NuWho's end, they do a big shebang for the 60th, then let it end there until the next time

that's not unlikely imho. It's possible that Jodie's era will revitalise the show, but I think the vast majority of the casuals dont give a shit. Matt Smith's era put them off, and no matter who plays the doctor, I don't think they'll come back

a couple of months ago I listened to EDA S1 for the first time, and every story was good, even Phobos. I just finished Dead London - it started out promising and became dreary technobabble with nonsense plot. I'm disappointed

The EDAs never really worked for me, although S4 throws out enough ideas that it's always entertaining. Much prefer the monthlies. And Dark Eyes.

yeah dead london is a bit messy. Series 1 and Series 4 are the kino Series

I think it's fair to compare, in terms of popularity,
Eccleston to Pertwee,
Tennant to Tom,
Smith to Davison,
and more or less, Capaldi to Colin

Lucie is what makes it work for me. She's a northern Donna.

>Capaldi to Colin
Great Drs, shit eras.

So Jodie's era will be massively underappreciated but kino?

No, Jodies era will be season 24.

her second and third season though, come on

Only s26 was pure kino. Therefore s13 will be GOATest NuWho series.

25 is pure if you swap Silver Nemesis for Paradise Towers

>it's the equivalent of the female Hamlet (too niche and only lasts a couple of performances)
You mean done over and over again for more than a hundred years because it's such an obvious concept? That comparison is bad for a lot of reasons (e.g. nature of a play with countless reinterpretations vs. a television series with a fixed character) but this might be the most egregious. I'm not even sure which production you're trying to allude to that only did 'a couple of performances', certainly not 2014's with Maxine Peake.

Happiness Patrol was always a letdown. Good ideas, shit execution. Some kino moments though

I doubt I'll make it that far desu senpai.

I joke that the Jodie era will be comparable to Seven's but I genuinely believe s11 will be good

Series 11 won't be bad. I trust Chibnall enough to make relatively good TV at least. Plus, he's not out of ideas like RTD was at the end, he's only just beginning

The most likely course is that Jodie's era will follow the same course as Smith's. Good-to-great first season thanks to the momentum of a new era. Ambitious but clumsy second season motivated by the success of the first. Aftershocks of that result in an unambitious third season.

s1 was good, s5 was good. 2-3 and 6-7 were full of ideas whether they were good or not. Next season will see something interesting and fresh, s12 will be when it all gets fucked up.

blacked mirror

What's your dream 60th anniversary episode?

Wait... what?

twitter.com/RhysThomasOBE/status/947157200669065217

It's probably some sort of parody thing.

Personally, the only EDAs I outright disliked were Phobos, Dead London, The Skull of Sobek, The Vengeance of Morbius, Wirrn Dawn and Nevermore.

Posting it one more time. Enjoy.

mega.nz/#F!ZzR2EIKB!NcUpCcBntwRDMGOWx10d7A

it's a spoof thing, it'll be a (shitty) joke

Rather than a single episode, several animated episodes featuring all the Drs taking part in their own individual adventures that interlock somehow.

What's your prediction for what it'll actually be?

We should listen to this in stream, tonight.

what are these titles for s11 im seeing on gbase?
11.1 the fall
11.2 unlucky for some
11.3 shadows 1
11.4 shadows 2
11.5 in the valley 1
11.6 in the valley 2
11.7 the fallen
11.8 the eyes of death
11.9 her last breath 1
11.10 her last breath 2

By encouraging people to pirate this aren't you jeapordising the possibility of them making more of them?

newfriend. keep seeing people mention stream. what is it?

If the show is still running I'll expect it to be a pile of toss like DoTD.

bullshit

also, you're not gonna have 'the fall' and 'the fallen' in the same series

709 episodes ago, on The Catterson Chronicles...

It's pedo code for photographs of Alex Kingston as a young girl. A stream being a small river.

>By encouraging people to pirate this aren't you jeapordising the possibility of them making more of them?

nah

it's a secret

Is this accurate?

some said is interconnected

If people like them, they'll buy them. That's what I normally do anyway. Regardless, I'd rather John Guilor, so I don't care one way or the other how well these sell.

That's okay then. Mind if I report the link to Big Finish? They usually give me free stuff when I do.

Fuck off cunt. Stop trying to start shit.

Correlation is not causation

>If people like them, they'll buy them
Not if I can get them for free.

Don't like it, don't reply. Simple.
But are the numbers accurate?

have you no emotions................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

yes now fuck off

sir?

>S-Stop calling me out!!!

People who don't care a lot about them or can't spend the money wouldn't buy them anyway. People who care enough to want the range to continue and have money to spend will pay for them anyway.

There's no need for that children. I was simply asking a question. A drop of around 2 million viewers is quite substantial.

>A drop of around 2 million viewers is quite substantial.

he's stirring shit, but he's not wrong, lads

suppose they did film them together

Thoughts on Arkangel? Neo?

I bet he didn't even cry at Capaldo's regen speech. The monster!

imdb.com/name/nm9426159/?ref_=tt_cl_t2

I found the concept really really unsettling, the ep itself kinda stalled around a lot though

>imdb

What shit am I supposed to be stirring?

the ratings conversation you muppet

I was satisfied, thought it was pretty good. Maybe I just wasn't expecting alot, or just could relate more than others.

I thought for a second that was Rory's dad coming back. Different Mark Williams though.
Is making relevant conversation shit stirring now? I'm so sorry. I'll discuss tripfag bullshit instead shall I?

Jodie has a very unique nose. I wonder if she'll comment on it.

I have mixed feelings about the EDAs. They never really felt like the modern show as intended. They have an inconsistent format with full hour stories and two part stories. The audios were generally good for what they were though. There is a spirit to them that makes each audio feel like an episode and each set like a season but the Eighth Doctor has almost always had that. I think the EDAs were just hitting their stride in S4 when it was the last and now we are in the box set era of the Eighth Doctor which is a different animal.

Reckon the mum was putting soy milk in those smoothies?

Who's hyped for the adventures of Jenny and Cyborg?

Wishful thinking but wouldn't it be great if Capaldi did Big Finish in a few years and had a Colin Baker-like renaissance?

Is there any corner of the canon that Big Finish won't scrape?
