The ORIGINAL Star Wars: The Force Awakens

what could have been…

initial Star Wars: The Force Awakens story (mostly pre-JJ)

These are some of the story ideas that can be pieced together from the concept art...

>George Lucas still involved to some degree; Arndt writing initial treatment based on Lucas’ ideas; Lucas himself approves several pieces of concept art
>Kira is the main character (an early version of Rey) and is described as a ‘gear-head’
>Kira lives on an unnamed junk planet (an early version of Jakku before it became a bland Tatooine 2.0)
>While searching the ruins of the sunken Death Star II she discovers the map to Luke Skywalker
>Sam joins her in her adventure (an early version of Finn) and is a deserting stormtrooper who escaped with John Doe (a force sensitive member of the Rebellion/Resistance and an early version of Poe); Sam has a hero’s journey of his own and goes through a spiritual journey of self-discovery

>Luke plays a major role in the movie; like TLJ he has isolated himself on another planet (concept art approved by Lucas); when Kira arrives he agrees to train her (and she does actually have some real training, unlike Rey)
>Luke goes on the adventure with Rey
>Several pieces of Luke/Kira concept art are very Kurosawa inspired
>Han Solo and Leia feature in an unknown capacity

>The main villain is the Jedi Killer (an early version of Kylo Ren) - a masked figure who collects and hunts Jedi/Sith artifacts; at least one version had Darth Vader’s burnt mask as the film’s MacGuffin; The Jedi Killer is more pirate-like in design than Kylo
>The Sith have returned; both concept art for TFA and TLJ feature a sort of Sith ‘force ghost’ as pulling the strings behind the new Sith, the Neo-Empire/First Order and (in the case of TLJ) the one pulling the strings behind Snoke
>Darth Talon features in several pieces of concept art and even storyboards; several other Sith ideas are explored
>The AT-AT and Star Destroyer designs are vastly different but still distinctively Star Wars; much more unique than anything we got in TFA/TLJ

The pre-JJ junk planet

more Lucas approved concept art

This is more similar to what we got than I would have expected. I think JJ did an ok job, especially since Harrison Ford wanting out probably was a major part of him signing on

yeah basic story is broadly similar. the visuals however are very different

Lucas approves of everything who gives a fuck. He let all the previous star wars fan fiction you hold so dear exist.

a Darth Talon seduction sequence

george lucas and the people he surrounded himself with were the kings of visuals

more Darth Talon (top left corner) and a random Sith idea

No doubt, but there is junk lying around on Jakku and this looks similar to what we got in TLJ

the first idea for the 'Jedi Killer'

I feel like the designs for Jakku and the first Jedi temple were way less visually interesting than the concept art. I think they could have done more with both planets - especially Jakku

>Lucas still involved to some degree
But you still don't get it. Even if he wouldn't have directed (which he probably still would have), the fucking man has final say on everything, everything is funded from his pocket, everyone answers to him.

For TFA especially I think they wanted to avoid the matte painting problems of the prequels. We did get crashed empire stuff all over Jakku, but yea it would have been nice if it was visually less like Tatooine

Leia looks like a full on reptilian in that art.

>This would never be allowed in Disney's nu-Star Wars

Not fair man.

...

so many designs for the 'Jedi Killer' were developed that they eventually were used for other characters including the Knights of Ren, Guavian Death Gang, and Captain Phasma

>this whole --- crushingly depressing --- thread

>Kira

honestly feel like the mask is the weakest part of that illustration

...

>sunken Death Star II
>sunken
?

Sam and John Doe

In other words, fake new Star Wars just consists of rejected and recycled material instead of bold new concepts which apparently only Lucas has the capable vision to sort thru and approve

DELETE THIS SHIT RIGHT NOW

This whole redemption arc would have been pretty easy to do and would be very watchable. Instead we got the Casino Planet.

>airlock ejection
that would have been intense for SW

Yup

Wasn't there a thing about Dohmnall Gleeson playing Luke's son and being a New Empire officer and yet not an evil character?

ikr

How do I know it’s not Lucas himself making these threads. Trying to make us feel guilty for throwing him out after the prequels.

that actually seems like something that wouldve looked awesome on screen. Shame we'll never get to see something like this

but it fucking exploded in space... i... what?

...

this could have been kino as fuck...

Fucking hell mate

I think the justification was that some of the debris fell to the surface

I'm guessing the Junkyard planet is not a place where a battle happened but more of a literal junkyard for the galaxy where you can find all kind of scraps

How can a drawn character in a piece of artwork be more charismatic than John Booyaga

submarine millennium falcon would have been dumb as fuck

>this whole thread
t-thanks disney

>The blood stain on the stormtrooper helmet becomes a symbol

The idea must have been good enough to have the artist shot

I love the nufilms, but even just the change of Poe or Finn being played by an older actor with some gravitas would make everything so much more interesting.

the Sith 'force ghost' taunting Luke and pulling the strings

Kira a CUTE

The junk planet could have been really cool

We didn't deserve this anyway

fucking redditors and RLM fags kept shitting on Lucas and bullying him.

Now we're stuck with Soy wars a Disney joint.

So.. Anybody who read this comic series in the early 90s.
Did it just become null and void?

It's now part of Legends, the new name of the EU, which is now non-canon (still better than what is now canon)

What book is this?

>Plagueis cheated death via force mcguffin
>Chosen one is reborn because the sith are back
>Kyo takes Plagueis down with him because muh feel feels for Rey who believes in him
Disney jews get their stronk woman who saved the galaxy by being nice, and Lucas gets to keep his "muh prophecy" shit. How did they manage to fuck up such an easy recipe for success?

fucking love this piece of Kira on the junk planet

Impatient ass argumentatites
We will get a comic based on the original concept art eventually case in point The Stead Wars comic based on the original Maguire concept art and scripts for the krigjnal trilogy. Pow. Naked Blue Yoda incoming.

Lucas is an ideas guy but a shit writer, the original Star Wars script is a jumbled mess. He needs people to tell him no and craft his ideas into something.

And yet guardians of the galaxy 2 had the balls to show people being blasted out into space and freezing to death.

2 books - The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and The Art of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Please stop posting these pictures.

It hurts.

Thank you user

Hope so because it doesn't make sense when the death star II blew up on over an entirely different planet, in another Galaxy.

I agree, they have to come up with some other craft to make iconic.

JJ had the idea of making the Jedi Killer into a Vader fanboy

Disney wasted a lot of potential here. If you're going to copy ANH, at least change the aesthetics and find something else to end the movie with besides another Death Star. A lot of this would have been an interesting direction to push the series.

Delete this entire thread it makes me suicidal

Yeah, George's original idea for the opening of Episode 7 was pottery to the original film's, but the Star Destroyer was a burned out piece of shit being towed to the junkyard planet by a Rebel Blockade Runner turned tugboat.

I REFUSE

Use the pain, blue boy.

>I was behind it all!

These people could never write for shit

The only reason the emperor existed behind vader was so vader could kill him as a redemption or as a plan to rule the galaxy with luke

Hey why not a force ghost behind the force ghost. Turtles all the way fucking down

Those concept art of original Jaku looks aesthetic af.
Wonder who thought to change it to what we got and what the idea was behind it? Fucking hell it was most likely something as basic as lets make Tatooine v2 so we get something familiar.

>dat han

Bearded han is so badass. Why didn't they do this shit. How did they fuck up this bad.

Best idea TFA had. I assumed it was Kasdan, so that's interesting.

Plagueis was such an easy and predictable but solid choice for a big baddy.

What book is this and where do I buy it?

>Everything in this thread

So, everyone willing to chip in for a hitman? fuck disney.

love the idea for that opening

jesus this is all so good.

like these pictures give me more enjoyment than the entire film

>While searching the ruins of the sunken Death Star II she discovers the map to Luke Skywalker
What sense does this make at all?

Shut up, you cuck.
Lucas is a greedy idiot and a billionaire.

It's like Han and Deckard combined to form a new Harrison.

>Felucia shows up again
fucking WHAT
that would have been sick

How autistic would it be to write a fan novel or comic based on these ideas? Not even using the same names maybe just a spiritual successor.

WHY DID THEY NOT DO ALL OF THIS? TFA IS SUCH A REHASH THAT TLJ HAD TO BURN IT ALL TO THE GROUND MID-TRILOGY

Why was the shooting script so good? How did it get out of all the insanely bad ideas and sci-fi schlock? I've never found an explanation for that.

It wasn't perfect, but all they had to do to get it there was cut scenes.

t. Kathleen Kennedy

The Emperor existed behind Vader because there was an Empire to run.
Vader was initially just like a Hans Landa-tier functionary where Palpatine was Hitler.

Disney is only responsible for distribution. The blame here falls on Lucasfilm and JJ.

5 rubles have been deposited in your russian bank account.

>The Knights of Ren could of been Sith Templars.
Dammit.

Bullshit. There's no way he had final say on everything in TFA and TLJ.

Actors had input (Alec Guinness was adamant Obi-Wan had to die)
Other members of his creative team also had input
Lucas was under extreme pressure so he couldn't fight everyone on every detail and rule with an iron fist like he did with the prequels, or even with RotJ when the cracks started to show a bit.

>But with each round, the story improved. In the second draft, published in 1975, Luke Skywalker is a farm boy, not an older general and Darth Vader is the menacing man in black we’re familiar with today. The third draft introduced Obi-Wan Kenobi and played up the tension between Leia and Han Solo. Acknowledging that he had trouble writing dialogue, Lucas brought in help from writers Willard Huyck and Gloria Katz (although the director rewrote most of their changes). For George, Star Wars was finally coming into focus. On January 1, 1976, he finished the fourth draft of the script, which eventually was used when production began in Tunisia on March 25, 1976.

Other writers and multiple drafts instead of just pumping out a script like a week before shooting

So turning Finn black, isn't that kinda racist?
I get having the need for a POC in the main cast. But isn't it kinda lazy just to copy and paste from concept art and then just turn him black?
How would black people feel if they knew that Finn was originally white and was only turned black to pander to them?

You know, this becomes really really sad when you realize is NEVER gonna happen, we looked at star wars with hope and now ... its so sad.

Then you realize TLJ literally ripped off GOTG for the humor.

youtube.com/watch?v=Kj3opk1QFTM

Tagging onto this Harrison Ford is the reason why Han says "I know" instead of "I love you too"

>I get having the need for a POC in the main cast.
Why

youtube.com/watch?v=ai_BNG9M7eE

Yeah although that happened when Lucas was off set and he was mad about it until Kirschner had him watch the scene
