Why has no other movie captured the feelings of isolation and loneliness better than Taxi Driver?

this movies awesome. we watched this in my cinematography class in the school theater. based teacher was based describing all the scenes and shit. fucking loved that class. imagine having a cool as young black teacher who worked in hollywood for a short while, describing scenes in movies all day. fucking based.

Fucking based user. +1
Enjoy your day!

>tfw i can relate to 'god's lonely man' monologue

than you kind sir, also Scarface kind of gives those feelings, but in a different way. i mean at the end of the movie, its just him against everyone.

My favorite scene is when Travis tries explaining his mental state to Wizard. The ambiguity and hesitation in what he is saying is just so relatable.
youtube.com/watch?v=PIxSi7PpUL8&t=

I like to autistically LARP as Travis but I'm alot fatter than him and barely leave my house at all. My room is also a rubbish tip.

I do feel his loneliness and general misanthropy though.

It would have been a perfect movie if a nigger had been cast instead of harvey keitel as the pimp. They were cowards to change that. The movie always be a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 for that reason.

why did he take her to a porno theater? is he slightly retarded/

Wizard is the typical normie you meet everywhere, so frustrating

I found that no other film spoke to me of feeling totally alone in the world like this one, it really took me back to my teenage years (Fortunately I've recovered from my depression and improved my life significantly since then)

HEY FUCKING AUTISTS. WHYD HE TAKE HER TO THE PORNO? THIS PART OF THE MOVIE MAKES NO SENSE TO ME? is it just to show how retarded he is?1

...

That was an alpha move

That's about the dumbest thing I ever heard.

A bald assertion isn't an argument. I've already refuted your representation based arguments. Give me something else.

>1977
>black lead actor

but who?

yeah good question lol i wonder if he knew non porn theaters existed

Hard to understand withoout ever experiencing a culture that had porno theaters all over the busiest leisure hub in the biggest city on earth.

He doesn't know how to relate to people. It still honestly feels out of character but I think the intention is to show
1) he has no understanding of other people
2) how desperately he wants to bring someone into his world and his life, so much so that he rushes to the seedier parts of it
3) how hypocritical his worldview is, that for all his monologuing about hating the filth really he wallows in it.

I thought it was meant to show that he is truly autistic in the literal sense of the word when it comes to sex. He doesn't recognize the erotic connotations of the movies hes seeing and takes her to that theater because its open late enough for them to go out. His obsession with the little girl hooker is because he has the sex drive of an autist who fetishisizes romantic purity.

that was my impression anyway.

female loneliness
>Megan gets way facebook likes than I do.
>My boyfriend is so boring
>Why do guys only want me for my body?
male lonliness
>I haven't spoken so another human being in over a month
>I haven't been touched by another human being since my mom last hugged me when I was 12

because it understands that lonliness and isolation often aren't felt in extreme moments of anguish, but rather, in the sad process of day to day life. So when we see Travis driving the taxi, his eyes glazing over, the streets practically swalloing him, we can relate because we often feel the same.

And when we see him alone in his apartment, that's also so mundane but so real. Other movies try to be so dramatic, but this movie captures the loneliness of simply day to day living

those are 3 of my top 5 favorite movies, what are some similar ones?

>I haven't been outside in a week
>I haven't made eye contact in anyone in days
>I haven't looked in a mirror in months

I miss being a kid

Lars and the real girl

I haven't had a real conversation with someone in about 7 years. I hate being a guy so much.

>tfw you're so used to being alone you get uncomfortable around people

I try not to be a pessimist but this life is such a sad one

Why don't you just go outside and meet people? Jesus Christ, talk about a pathetic existence.

This. Just bee yourself.

Remove Drive immediately. It doesn't deal with the same ideas in Taxi Driver and has little-to-no nuance.

>Just go outside and talk to strangers, what's the issue

I wish it were that simple user

Should be replaced with Lars and the real girl desu

I do. People don't like talking to ugly, awkward people like me. I tried for so long and I got nowhere.

The film is pretty Gnostic when you think about it.
The Gnostics thought that the material world was evil and that you had to break free from it. The medieval Cathars, basically a Gnostic sect, even encouraged suicide. They thought sex was evil insofar as it brought new life into this evil world, and encouraged abortion. Gnostics thought that the creator of the material world was a somewhat malevolent/stupid being called the Demiurge, that ended up trapping our spirits in the material world.

Now this film depicts the material world as a hellish place. Sex is treated solely as a dirty thing that brings shame. His loneliness and isolation comes mostly from his feeling that the world about him is a morally reprehensible cesspool that deserves to be wiped out of existence. It's the problem of evil / sin. That his response to this problem is Gnostic rather than Christian is shown by his response to it. The Christian response to evil / sin is to see that the world is fallen but still fundamentally good; that men are fallen but still potentially redeemable. Christians accept the burdens of this life and learn to forgive sinners. The Gnostics however, because they think the world is fundamentally evil and irredeemable, believe that it needs to be overthrown. So Travis takes his judgement against the world into his own hands in the final scene. That close-up up at the end after he's slaughtered those pimps, with his bloody face and his pointing at his head with those crazy eyes - it makes him look insane like he's finally lost all contact with reality. I'd say that it's a Gnostic moment in the film in that his soul seems to have left his body at that point, plus he's expressing his complete disgust and contempt for the world.

thanks user
>check my country's "imdb"
>top reviewer
>'cool premise but I would like this plot in some crazy comedy with will ferrel or something'
never ceases to amaze me

Interesting scene. Travis is right, that is the dumbest shit anyone has ever said. Basically Wizard is saying, "shit happens" or "that's just the way things are". Nothing shows how phony this pseudo-wisdom is than when you are confronted with the problem of evil. Travis is disgusted with the world and wants to get his vengeance on it, but he recognises that his thoughts are "bad" (evil). Nothing is more hollow than saying "shit happens" or "that's just the way things are" when you are confronted with the evil in the world, and your moral conscience demands some kind of answer. Travis wants the redemption of the world but he takes it into his own hands and ends up going mad. In this sense, he's actually a symbol of Antichrist, a false messiah.

Critics tend to be pretty out of touch user. But yea I think you'll like it a lot. Not a lot of movies get me teary eyed but Lars is one of them

...

>Some coworker was talking about her aunt who had pretty much given up on life. They found her house in shambles, broken pipes flooding the first floor, trash everywhere, filth, garbage, rotting food, etc. The aunt is just despondent and depressed. She's in her early 60s. They moved her out into an assisted living place but she's not getting better, and it's likely she'll keep displaying this behavior.

>My female coworkers couldn't understand it. "She had a good job! She went to business school! She had TWO masters degrees!" So confusing, amirite? So I asked, did she ever get married or have kids? Nope, course not. Well, there's your answer ladies. Not such a big mystery.

yea he's a real nigga

...

interesting, thank you user

Plenty of women care about your personality over your looks; I'm married to one. What about meeting women on the job?

He just wanted to be himself. And notice how there were other couples in the theater - she was just a prude obsessed with social status. That's why she goes back to him in the end.

>describing scenes in movies all day.
Seems fucking annoying, and I truly believe only people who can't interpret or understand movies on their own would enjoy this. You seem like the type of person to watch "End of _______ explained" videos on youtube.

Based based poster

Did he pick up on Travis's racism?

Fuck yeah is this another
>movies women can never understand
thread?

I have a crippling drug addiction user so it keeps me pretty complacent. I have no motivation to do anything

Oh man withnail and i is fantastic. Forgot about that movie

>when it zooms in and the previously clear water becomes riddled with specks of dirt and you realize this is what Travis sees all the time, on every street, on every corner

Was he just daydreaming there at the end?

You need to start watching more films user

>bye shootah
>*pew*
This was my entire school career being an antisocial white kid. I understand this so much.

Martin Scorsese is a hack,

Do you think Travis ever weighed the idea of killing himself?

*killa*

I know it's a bit of a buzz word but that film was needlessly edgy. I felt it was grotesque and violent just for the sake of it

Pi and Eraserhead gives of similar vibes

is this pasta or just one dumb faggot copy pasting a reply

No, his anger in the rearview mirror shows he hasn't changed and it's only a matter of time before he snaps again.

Nah, he was just fucking around when he shoved that gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger a few times

>he hasn't seen the age of innocence

This.Based user, idk what made me watch this movie,i initially thought it would be a teenager roastie soap-opera drama,(oh god was i wrong) in the end it was totally worth it,very underrated desu.

Oh I forgot about that scene.
I meant before the shootout. Like just day to day life.

What proof is there of this interpretation? I don't like it, it can't be

Your post is pathetic.

welcome to french new extremity (people said the same thing about taxi driver when it came out btw)

Well now you're just making excuses. Plenty of people overcome drug addictions, if it's a problem get help. I'm actually saying this genuinely, no one deserves to die a lonely druggie. Luv u user

Go outside senpai. Go for a long walk. You'll feel better.

>What about meeting women on the job?
That's illegal now. Where have you been the past 3 months?

You can't will yourself to have a likeable personality. A lot of it is genetic or circumstantial.

70s NYC was dirty and harsh, perfect to make great kino

modern NYC is a Disney theme park

Harvey was a good actor, and doing the replacement made the racism subtle and natural rather than blatant and obvious like every other Hollywood movie would have done. It made it so the racism was just another part of Travis's attitude towards life rather than a defining character feature

Taxi Driver had themes and genuinely unique takes on subjects that were otherwise not really addressed in film. The violence helped tell the story whereas in I Stand Alone I felt the violence was the story. Noe as a director I feel like goes for the shock value over substance a lot of the time but I Stand Alone was by far the worst case of this. Even worse than Irreversible imo

Not trying to make excuses user just telling you my siutation. I have zero motivation to do anything outside of the bare necesitites expected of me. I'd love to drop the drugs but than I'd actually have to deal with the loneliness sober and if I did I think I'd go crazy

I'll give it a shot user but I don't like going on walks generally as it leaves me alone with my thoughts for too long. It makes me uncomfortable

Yeah I kind of think you're reading too much into this. Nice try though.

This was a very good interpretation I hadn't considered before

It's amazing stuff user just for the sheer grittiness of it. I mean look at this shit, it looks something from Fallout

...

>reading too much into this
>a shot that serves to depict travis's state of mind that slowly brings to light the true nature of the filth under one's very gaze that most ignore but he doesn't
>parallels with everything he says to the politician in the cab

I don't think this "means" anything in like a logical, syllogistic, codebreaking symbolism sort of way. It's just a beautiful visual compliment to Travis and his building turmoil and anxiety

I just assumed the Alka Seltzer was a metaphor for Travis' emotions. All fizzing and bouncing around. Agitated.

The original should be there over 2049 pleb fodder, and and Lee in MBTS is a brooding loser who deserves everything that happened to him. Still can't believe the police just let him get away; "not a crime" - how come? He should have at the very least been charged for negligence or maybe even manslaughter.

DeNiro and Harvey have really good chemistry that goes back to Mean Streets, I'm glad he did the role.

no but we discussed how Tarantino was able to use the n-word in his movies because he grew up in torrance L.A. around a lot of black people.

remake with Goose as taxi driver when?

fuck man I forgot how good this movie is. I havent seen it in years. Really need to rewatch it

Never, hopefully. I like the Goose, but this movie doesn't need to be remade.

You mean scorseses racism?
