I'm about to actually start my first few pages

nice!

no you aren't you lazy fuck

Thanks
>Actually dedicating to write a not so shitty script
>Learned to actually draw half decently to be able to draw my comic myself
>Lazy fuck

post work

>Actually responding to it

How do you become funny?

As in what is the art of comedy and writing dialogue and jokes that are actually funny with a clear understanding of comedic timing given specific circumstances?

Yes I understand comedy is 'subjective'. But there is a difference between a quality joke and bland 'for the lolz' surface level humor.

Reposting from the last thread

> there is a difference between a quality joke and bland 'for the lolz' surface level humor.
why don't you tell us what it is, you might answer your own question
i'll tell you how I think humor works after that

Same. They'll probably be shitty, but I'll take shitty, extant pages over hypothetical ones.

plus you can reference and make fun of them later.

Storyboard to first draft!

This looks great! Color, characters, backgrounds. The punchline made me smile, but it's your characters that really sell it for me. They're very entertaining.
Is there a reason why you went with the 4-panel format?

renaissance era tentacle porn? I can get behind that

Don't give me any ideas, I want to be able to finish this comic within this century

Not quite a webcomic, but,
>Hire artist to do art for the project
>They offer a timetable that is pretty agreeable, decent weekly progress
>Three weeks pass
>They don't even have basic drafts of anything
>Ask them wtf is going on
>Oh sorry my other contract has kept me super busy, I just haven't had the time.
>They have spent about fifty hours in the last two weeks playing video games on steam
>Their social media shows them spending most of several days just hanging out with people.

Fired. This is how artists get fired.

Best of luck. Remember; "finished, not perfect."
If you can differentiate between what you find funny, and what is "for the lolz" surface humor, I think you might be able to answer your own question. Why not try creating a few strips that you may find funny? Make jokes that will make YOU laugh, and people may share the same humor you do.
Good to see you're still at it. And I'm seeing a ton of improvement from just a few months back when you posted a few pages. Great job!
Interesting layout. I'm really digging the "ye olde cristian imagery". Can't wait to see the final draft.
It sounds like you don't have a real interest in it to begin with. It may be an easy way to popularity, but you may get bored rather quickly, and want to move onto better things down the road. I'd say really work on creating something you'll really enjoy, with a bit of pandering.
Sorry to hear that user. Hope you find an artist with a better work ethic down the road.

This will be the first day in 2 weeks I haven't made at least one page. Instead I'm going to go through and edit pages and add dialogue (and fix dialogue at last thread's suggestion). Such momentum-loss days are often how I lose projects, so I declare to this thread, I will have another page tomorrow.

bump

Keep going, you can do it.

Reworking some pages, although sometimes I wonder if inking in real life is worth it at all if I am just going to re ink it digitally anyway. I haven't find ways for the digital corrections to mesh well with regular inking stuff.
How many pages have story boarded so far? Its a good practice but its meant to be done so you can see how entire sequence of pages flows.

>royallolicomics.blogspot.com/2017/05/chapter-1.html

Need to zoom out.

First time i ever made a whole of chapter of something in comic form. The writing made me cringe multiple times, and I really wish i made better art.

Besides that, what does Sup Forums think? please r8

I like your color palette a lot.

someone got a link to the last thread?

Working on a space marine type character which usually isn't my kind of thing. I'm trying to make him look like if a mediocre college football player was suddenly dropped into a high stakes NFL game.

Forgot to use my name on here. In case it wasn't obvious it was me.

here you go

>Is there a reason why you went with the 4-panel format?

Looking back, it's probably stupid, but I thought a 4 panel comic would be less work, given that this is my first comic and I'd like to keep it simple. I grew up with 4 panel comics like Calvin and Hobbes and Peanuts, which always had a punchline but usually a plot over several weeks, so I wanted to create something that's episodic and non-episodic at the same time.

However, even my co-artist mentioned that a regular comic would be better, so I'm not sure anymore. I like having punchlines at the end of every page, so you can enjoy them even if you don't like the story. However, I don't think a punchline always has to be a joke, so there will be some darker moments here and there.

The story I came up with is actually pretty weird and I assume it'll get quite confusing for my readers later on, so I can only hope it'll all work out if I keep that format. Whenever I need more panels, we usually just keep the square file size and play around with the layout, like we did in the posted page.

What do you think? Should I keep the "4 panels and a punchline" format or is it bad for a story-driven comic?

Some good old character designing.

...

are you really, really sure about having his tiny demon cock waggling around?

What about, like, giving him leather pants or a thong

I was thinking convenient censoring. Like Austin Powers.

Anyone know a good place for a Start Point?

Where I can Kick the whole thing off?

dude wtf are you on about, a start point for what? get the fuck out of here and start a damn comic already im tired of seeing your gay character designs, do something with your life already.

Fuck you.

dumbass, this isnt a donut steel thread fuck off

No.

i have a feeling you wouldnt be very good at making one..just a feeling.

I already did

It was okay.

bump

Anyone have interesting ideas for organic looking clothes or wearable tech that won't come off as primitive?

In the universe I'm working with there's a large faction that spans half the known universe that refuses to utilize anything they view as synthetic or mechanical and have managed to rival nearly every benefit of technology through biological alternatives. So they're actually pretty advanced, just not in the way we usually think of. I'm having trouble staying creative with their fashion statements and wearable technologies though, it needs to be obvious that they were made from living things.

Are they the bug people on the right?

About 20 for the first chapter - although my script had me at 12. I really just wanted to bump the thread with some content.
Why do you digitally ink? I think I might have to do that, just because my regular hand-inking isn't so great.
I see you post pretty regularly, but I haven't been keeping up. As usual, it's another impressive page! Other than your characters, I really like the bit of background in the first panel, as well as some of the small touches like the cartoon-y stars.

Were you the poster from before who was worried about the cringe content of his comic? I think they posted with an attached image of that blue-haired girl from Madoka.
I think I understand the angle you're coming from, 4-koma slice of life comedy about an awkward girl trying to get a boyfriend. I like how Aki is just a regular dude, he's not even mean about it even though Reiko seems like a pain to deal with.
Sometimes it doesn't follow the 4-koma format though, like in comic (2), attached is what I propose. The writing is a little vulgar, but I can see the humor there. As for art, I would try for something simpler, also attached (right) is just a really simple style.
As it stands, I see your first chapter more as a storyboard, other than an official comic.

I can't wait for your content to come out, you're also doing a review series right? It all just looks so promising. The silhouette is great, I think the whiskers above his lip really help with the image. Have you ever seen Starship Troopers? That's what it vaguely reminded me of.

(1/2)

All three of those guys are. Gill sparingly uses ancient salvaged machinery parts along side organic technologies such as that chute system manipulating her weird slime arm, but she's an odd case. She's wearing a grubworm vest, boots made from some kind of fungus and the rest of her clothing is probably made from some kind of animal hide.

Totally had starship troopers in mind actually! But yeah I'm launching the review series within the next month or so and then launching the "vegabond" comic after I garner some kind of audience from the videos. No idea when that will be but I have loads of resources I need to make for the comic anyway so I'm not in any kind of rush. Script has been done for a while though.

I think the 4-panel comic works, but since it's a parody of a shounen type story I thought a 'regular' format might suit it better. I think the page you attached really works around that condition though, and it's really cool! All of these dark silhouettes look really cool, I can't wait to see them all.
I wouldn't mind seeing a 'regular' paneled comic from you guys that's more story-driven. Maybe if it works out, the current one can be a more light-hearted comic, and then you can have a more 'serious' story-driven comic too.

Looks like a western! Top guy is pretty intimidating, not only could he use my bones as toothpicks, he's also naked - tactical genius.
Rosa is looking pretty neat too. With your art style, I'm really interested in seeing how your comic, or whatever it is you're making, turns out.

Army pants do seem like a good way to incorporate something organic into a function setting.
Attached:
Artificial photosynthesis (top left), metal-organic framework (MOF), organic light emitting diode (OLED), are some thing that came to mind, and as far as I'm concerned are made with organic materials. Left-center are some compiled images from the Trove A/W 2011 line, and right is like /fa/'s 'lunarcore'

(2/2)

Really interesting ideas. I'll definitely start working with some of these. Thanks!

Today's 4koma sisters!

Are there good webcomics out there with non sexual furry characters? A lot of the katbox comic have anthropomorphic furry characters with huge boobs, and a lot of them feature sex scenes or nude fanservice. So I was wondering if there was stuff out there thats a bit more tame. I want to write and draw stories that feature animal characters and humans. But maybe more along the lines of old school cartoons.

>I wouldn't mind seeing a 'regular' paneled comic from you guys that's more story-driven. Maybe if it works out, the current one can be a more light-hearted comic, and then you can have a more 'serious' story-driven comic too.

We tried doing two stories at the same time, but it ended up being too much work, so the other comic is on hiatus now. You can still check it out here, if you want:
circlejerk.de/dpm/en/comic/c01p01/

From my webcomic bookmarks -
>Lackadaisy
>Cucumber Quest
>The Green Knight
>Jail Bird
>The Devil's Henchmen
>Poppy o'Possum
>Beatriz Overseer
feature anthro animals without the kind of capital-f Furry fanservice you'd find on Katbox, although some of them touch on more mature themes in varying degrees.
Cucumber and Jailbird are possibly the more cartoony ones.

You might also want to take a look at comics like Usagi Yojimbo.

>I want to write and draw stories that feature animal characters and humans. But maybe more along the lines of old school cartoons.

Then go ahead and do that. Let your influences be Hanna Barbera cartoons and newspaper gag strips, like the sort of things that are on GoComics.com.

spiderquest.tumblr.com/

Got a test-version of the new site up

I'll probably go with bug-quest-2 instead of spiderquest

This new version of the webcomic theme seems to have waaay better resolution than the previous. I remember everything other than 700px wide posts used to get get super horribly compressed; it doesnt seem that way anymore

foxandcatadventures.tumblr.com/

I can't draw and I'm making a comic to learn a few thing. The comic is made in Paint. A fox and a cat living in a hut in the middle of an ocean go on adventures.
I wonder how long I can keep it cute and fun until it drifts off into the weird and spooky.
How do other people do it?

Back with a couple more.
As before, it's Wip (missing balloons and some fine tuning here and there).
But i appreciate any sort of feedback.

1/2

2/2.

Thank you so much for these suggestion, nice for a change of pace from furry tittymonsters. I'll use some of these as inspiration for my webcomic.

I was thinking of watching a whole bunch of those old cartoons for ideas. I like there designs for characters.

If I knew a good starting point I might actually feel confident enough to start... Instead of feeling like I'll regret it later always wondering if there was always a better place to start.

could i get an example of what your anthros look like?

(also theres a comic called terrible terrible terrible which has non-sexy furries in it)

NGMI

I don't have any designs yet, thats why I was asking about non sexy furry comics. I'll get to designing asap.

> I think they posted with an attached image of that blue-haired girl from Madoka.
Nah. That was Nanael from Queens Blade. One of my personal favorite characters of all time.

>4-koma slice of life comedy
Actually, this was going to turn into something Higurashi no Naku or Mirai Nikki-like in the next few chapters. But i guess you could say thats slice of life too in a way.

>an awkward girl trying to get a boyfriend
heh. Sort of an understatement.

>Aki is just a regular dude
I thought he was an asshole. I really wish i could write male characters like their from King of the Hill. Ive never been impressed by a male character in anime yet except for like the big ones like Leouche and what not.

>Sometimes it doesn't follow the 4-koma format though, like in comic (2), attached is what I propose.
wow. you really improved it!

>As for art, I would try for something simpler, also attached (right) is just a really simple style.
But the right style looks so shitty compared to the left! I can never purposely downgrade my art. Iwant art just like kisaragi gunma and okamoto lynn one day.

>The writing is a little vulgar, but I can see the humor there.
I dont think i can ever create something that isnt the shitposting form of writing in my lifetime.

>I see your first chapter more as a storyboard, other than an official comic.
lol. thats what it felt like for me drawing half way through.

Im probably going to scrap this story and move onto a different one.

thank you, friend

whos point of view is the comic from?

fuuuuuccccckkkk thats cool i like the demons face when he looks up, i thought she pulled out a gatling gun for a sec, dope keep it up!

>"Looks like a western!"
Was going for more of a Spaniard vibe but you're still right by technicality, lol. Thanks for the positive feedback! I think I'll post a bit more here in the future to motivate myself.

Woooooah, I love this! That girl reminds me of Saya from Blood:The Last Vampire, so much attitude in that face!

What site would you recommend for hosting a graphic novel like Captain Underpants? I was going to use Tapastic, but their TOS seems a bit dodgy when it comes to eventual publishing elsewhere.

Thanks! And yeah Blood the last Vampire was def. an inspiration.

recycle bin

>previous year hiveworks submission time
>people posted ideas and discussed their submissions
>this year: nothing
>/hyw/ got destroyed so hard last year that no one bothered to try this year

HIveworks actually switched to year-round submissions now, so no more submissions season or deadlines

Ah sorry! They look kind of similar when the image isn't expanded.
I wouldn't call it downgrading, but it's getting you used to drawing with weight, and over time you can refine it the way you would like to. There are some challenging poses, angles, and perspectives in your comic, and it might easier to understand them if you had easier models to work off of.

For a horror/mystery, obviously check out some works by Junji Ito, Fuan no Tane does a pretty good job at building suspense, Uno Moralez does a good job at building an atmosphere, tama (attached) does some interesting spook-stuff, and definitely some of clonemanga's earlier works.

If you want to continue along those lines, I would definitely focus on building a mysterious and suspenseful atmosphere! It would definitely mean slowing the pace of your comic.

it's easier to learn to draw yourself than to find an artist who isn't a complete flake, even if you pay them. and learning to draw well is hard as fuck so that's pretty bad.

your best bet is to actually get an artist who's actually invested and interested in your project, but that's still no guarantee.

This guy is so goddamn hammy

i prefered the black and white version man. Watercolor gives me an unfinished feel to it. I don't know why.

thicc
nudity is legit

It was okay enough that you don't need to react like this to this guy
his complaint is valid, it's just not valid about you

>organic clothes
genetically engineered animals with human shape so they can skin them and wear them? like leather that obviously has no seams, and has wrinkly elbows and knees.
>wearable tech
fiberoptics and stuff?

it's moreso that he didn't seem to actually read the post I wrote

I was literally saying "how do I start the webcomic" and he said "Fuck you, start a webcomic"
Like, read, dude.

is it just me or .. these scenes seem really cropped, like each panel should be wider

i thought that was a book

I'm pretty sure they did it on purpose

It's a more literal interpretation of a graphic novel (a novel with pictures on every page with comics occasionally)

Lmao, I think this guy knows what he's doing, dude.

oh ok
well i think the best place for that is something like gumroad. that's how tannah and vard did it

I really like your crosshatching technique, very neat and tidy. You draw lose clothing very well and you did great showing how gravity and motion affect clothing. Great job with the lighting it panel 5.

In the fourth panel though, how comes you added motion lines to the kids run forward as it they got up in the blink of an eye. They look like ninjas moving at the speed of sound (sonic), might have been more appropriate to just show them moving forward with out the extra motion lines.

Great comic though!

Definitely. I don't like it.

Lmao it's not enjoyable to look at, dude, and he's looking for feedback, dude, lmao.

ah okay cool, like a claustrophobic feel to ut the reader on edge

when do I give up the dream and just pursue something more realistic? when do I stop living up in the clouds

you can stop living in the clouds when you're dead

Yeah the pwyw model is something I was looking into, but I wanted to experiment with an update schedule as well. Back when I was in middle school and Diary of a Wimpy Kid wasn't even a book yet, I read it on Funbrain.

I'd love to see more of your stuff if you post anywhere else.

dayum nigga, that's some hot stuff right here.

Interesting outfits, can I ask the inspiration for them?

Trying to convey a character going through heatstroke. Trying.
This is going to be an afterlife comic and I'm planning on having the MC suffer a lot later. Do you like making your characters suffer, Sup Forums?

looks pretty sweaty, but not quite heatstroke. should probably be turning redder.
and hell no i want all my characters to be happyyyy

if I were you, i'd go on a more gradient approach:
The colors become more and more saturated as it happen, and more wonky angles as the stroke happens. Then again, i can't color for shit so...

Btw, here's the last page, i'm gonna add the text, and voilà: new chapter done!

thanks! Will try that.

Don't listen to the other user, your warer colors are awesome.

I like the guy too, looks like less buff Morel. The dialogue's a little cheesy though.

Nothing particular, I just thought of medieval looking clothes and customized them until I liked them or till they fit to the specific characters.
Unless you mean the two monks - these two are just wearing the vestments of the Dominican Order.

I never said they were bad. I just meant the inked page without colors had more impact on me.

>medieval Mamoru
fuckin love it
