The Last Jedi on the other hand is a genuinely great film, an instant classic.

I feel emotions when I watch the prequels, because I'm invested in the story. They're thoughtful, dramatic, cathartic, dense, clever, poignant, very well-made films. I love them.
I also felt emotions when I watched TLJ, but it wasn't because I was invested. I felt bewilderment, embarrassment, and ultimately remorse at what could have been, leaving me with the bitter taste of having been insulted to the tune of two and a half hours of my life and £8.50 out of my pocket.
Fuck that film.

at least the prequels TRIED to do something fun with the series. No pussy-footing around the original trilogy or any fan service. It fell a bit flat but at least it was an honest attempt.
Meanwhile, TLJ just fucking shits all over Star Wars. And so blatantly too. I'm all for subverting tropes and going for interesting angles, but fuck man, try writing a story first and foremost, and don't forget that this is STAR WARS. This is space cowboy fantasy. There's nothing wrong with a bit of fan service in a movie with 40 years of history and fandom to it.
Despite whatever issues one may have with the prequels- be it the fact that it's not a retelling of the OT, the abundance of CG, Jar Jar etc, it did at least have that familiar, warm, fuzzy Star Wars feeling. The photographic style was the same, the colours and lighting were the same, the creature and technology designs were imaginative and aesthetically consistent, it all felt like it came from the same place.
And more than that, they have a naive, child-like fairytale timelessness to them. It's pure escapism. By contrast, Disney's Star Wars films are entirely too self-aware, cynical, and grounded in contemporary methods of storytelling. That's the problem with trying to 'modernise' Star Wars. Apart from the cutting-edge effects, it was never a product of its time, even in its time.
It's amazing how I never noticed any of those and they feel clever, meanwhile the new films are in your face and copy and paste.

I don't understand why del Toro was on the film. His character's shades of grey outlook on all of life is just out of place in Star wars especially when the entire story is light and dark balanced but not mixed.

Luke Skywalker went through discovering his dad was darth vader and didn't go through killing him. There's no way he would have killed one of his family member just because "DURRR HE THOUGHT OF TURNING TO THE DARK SIDE, REEEEEEEEEEEE". If that was the case he would have killed vader without a second thought. The real luke would have taken his time and changed the path of Kylo instead of pulling a fast one and making him go full evil. And then isolate himself because he somehow became a bitch through all these years and didn't want anyone to see him due to his failures
