Considering Art is legitimately uneasy, I think the fact they're both fully-transgendered people is probably the case, but the presentation is failing spectacularly at getting that across.

Don't transgenders have issues being referred to as their original genders too? If this is supposed to be some kind of "I'm cool with trannies" sentiment then the fact the main cast is using the original genders is pretty glurgy.

No, I'm saying the joke is *bad* bad. If JJ's trying to make fun of transgendered people, he's doing a shitty job as they're depicted only as helpful and accommodating to their neighbors. Instead, Art is coming off as the jerk/in the wrong for wanting nothing to do with them, even if they make him uncomfortable on a physical level

Even if you think transgendered people are being selfish/deceptive/wrong, the joke just doesn't work if they're not doing something portrayed in a negative light.
