Some say its action without it having much action, and others say its trying to send out a message about the cruelty of war despite us being forced to be interested in the cruel protagonists plight.

It's the first Tarantino that really feels like an epic, kill Bill doesn't count because he got jewed by the studio. It's all the western shit he creams his pants over but with WWII iconography, really novel concept. And it's bolstered by strong performances in foreign languages, which gives it more of an adult feel than his other movies.
Overall it's my favorite of his.
