I don't know why, but for some reason Baldwin's Aku overrides Mako in my head now as my 'default' Aku voice. He's alright and all, though I wouldn't say he was even an inch near "better", but something about his line deliveries just stick in my head for some reason.

Also the themes of despair and redemption in the show are well grounded and down to earth.

Same here, user. Maybe it's because they talked so much in this season vs the original seasons where we were lucky to get more than 5 minutes of dialogue from one character. I don't mind it too much though, I like both voices.

At which point did Genndy decide to make Aku a more comedic villain? As far as I remember he was dead serious until Aku's Fairytales.
Was that planned all along to add comedy to that episode by having Aku acting uncharacteristically goofy or did Genndy decide to just turn Aku into a goofball one day?

I think that episode ended up being so funny that they just ran with it.
