No matter how many versions of Superman there are or how many people shit on him, to me Superman is the true American superhero. He is the good Samaritan who will rescue your cat from a tree or help you pull your car out of the mud. I understand that to keep him interesting they have to have him be involved in 21st century moral dilemmas, but at his core he will always be our #1 boy scout. who always saves the day.

Picked up "The Golden Age of Superman Vol. 1" and was surprised to see how the very first Superman was so short with criminals and savage af.
He forces a munitions manufacturer to join the army by threat of killing him, enlists with him, watches him break down and promise never to manufacture munitions again. Then he forces the Generals to fight out the rest of the war, and they say "I don't have a problem with him!" and resolve that wars are only fought to sell ammunition.
In the first issue he just ruthlessly beats people up and only says asshole one liners.
He is a total spineless fag in front of Lois in the first issue though. The real world story of Action Comics #1 is interesting as well.

powerlevels have never been a factor in DC/Marvel anyway. no two writers agree on what the powerlevels are so one story superman could shit on green lantern then as soon as the writer changes hal suddenly is fighting even with supes.
