I liked Ultimatum too, even though it threw out a lot of possible stories and characters.

JMS wrote right up to Siege, maybe 1 or two books before. He refused to write it, they actually wanted him to write it but he just said "Fuck you, I want to tell my story not Bendis garbage." and left. He had a good run and brought Thor out of Ragnarok and, rightly so, thought it was an idiodic idea to destroy everything he built. Thor and Asgard was back for 2 years and Marvel thought it was a good idea to fuck it over and destroy it again. Marvel just shat all over everything he did, he was right to give them the finger
While I agree that it is tired writing and not very good, it is definitely not penance levels of bad. For it to be penance bad, Volstagg would have to beat himself in the face with Ultimjolnir daily once for each child that he saw die that day and claim it's how he is fixing his karma. Then he'd have to get a cat and make it do the same thing and name it something along the lines of WarCat the Warmongering Puss.
