Seriously what needs to happen for comics industry to be legitimized Sup Forums?

Seriously what needs to happen for comics industry to be legitimized Sup Forums?

Impossible. 95% of people out there won't read anything longer than a Internet meme. You can't make comics a big success

No more/ limited capes. DC and Marvel just become publishing companies like any other book publishers, taking in independent authors, just specializing in comics. Push serious comics as art, and a variety of other comics in every genre possible.

Essentially, replace cape-comics with every other kind of comic

This is honestly a tough question not because it doesn't have an answer, but because any answer I can think of or that has been thought of either doesn't work not due to failure but as said, sheer disinterest from those involved and even less interest from those not involved OR can be turned against itself.

After all the danger of success is it relies most often on the most common, which can make the unexceptional soar while the exceptional sinks.
In a way you simply cannot truly and permanently elevate anything through effort, it simply has to happen naturally to support itself.

to legitimize the comics industry we need to get rid of crazy old hobos like Moore who scream about how comics are trash media for retards.

Once that stops we can take creators to task for treating comics like they ARE trash media for retards. Then we can change the landscape on the large scale.

It's already legitimate. You fucking nerds are obsessed with status.
Read good shit and recommend it to others. Don't buy books you don't like.

>It's already legitimate.
Not on social scale.

Specialized comic book shops need to go away forever.

>Seriously what needs to happen for comics industry to be legitimized Sup Forums?
>Specialized comic book shops need to go away forever.
Well basically you meant we need to kill Diamond Comics.
At some stage Diamond needs to go, before the population have real access to comics. Diamond can either be broken up, or it would go down when the entire comic industry collapse with it. It is fascinating how there is such a big monopoly for a single industry.

see literally the only thing holding us back now is faggots shouting to the media about how comics suuuuuuuuuuuuuuck guys like really suck it's diaper school for babies

Come to Europe.

avoid the SJW bullshit and any kind of morality would be a good start

>how can comics be taken seriously as an art form?
>avoid controversy

yes, that is definitely how cinema, literature, and design became respected.

comics that are not manchild fantasies shit out on a monthly schedule are seen as legitimate

Stop giving a shit about how comics are perceived by others.

Already is. Sandman and Watchmen are taught in university literature classes.

>it's never a Sup Forums filename when someone cries about Sup Forums

Really activates the almond.

butt user avoiding controversy and censoring is what SJW do

>dividing the audience is a fiscally sound idea
Would you support alt-right ideologies being vindicated in comics? If suddenly we turned Batman into a racist, nationalist, anti-immigrant, ethnocentrist?
Literally no one would want that. And that's true for the reverse, too.

Why would you illustrate your thread with prose author Alan Moore, who no longer writes comic books?

>Really activates the almond
Why yes, you should eat cyanide.

>Reddit filename

Fucking Christ

...

Oh indifags,
keep pushing that rock up that hill and patting yourself on the back.
This.
You can't force people to read enough comics to appreciate the substance. And it doesn't help that the whole industry shoots itself in the foot on a regular basis.

quit pandering. tell the story you want to tell, tell us stories about gods clashing. tell us stories about the impossible. weave tapestries that compel us, not just try to shock or bait. comics aren't being written to be interesting, they're turning all click baity. and quit being so self referential, putting all of these heroes into the same world or universe doesn't make sense. they don't need to share the same space, it's like crossovers have just gotten completely out of hand.
another problem is that comics these days are so fucking meta they're losing sight of the story.
and there are way too many special interests working to force comics into decisions or fucking with established characters for little to no merit to the stories and legends of those characters.
tell a story about a dorky white guy in new york becoming a hero while still experiencing the challenges of being a dorky white guy in new york. now he's black. for no reason.

tell a story of a genius engineer creating a suit to combat evil. focus on the numerous flaws that come with such genius and the complications associated with being the sole proprietor of advanced technology both in expectation and in duty.
now he's a black chick for no reason.

the prototypical masculine Norse god of thunder. now he's a girl.
for no. fucking. reason.

this shit has to stop.

>whaa why isn't comics legit
>whaa why isn't sci fi legit
>whaa why isnt comics legit

K. The first two are genres and not mediums. But fantasy was looked down on for a long time too. CS Lewis and Tolkien changed that, even though their stories suck compared to the earlier fsntasy books.

If you want mass spread i guess you got movies. If you want legitimacy, it is already there cause universities teach this stuff

Have you seen what's big on a social scale?
Probably for the best.
Every now and then Tarantino gives them a shout put, or some indie band makes an awesome Red Tornado song. That's pretty much all you need if you want to feel cool about enjoying them.

Marvel and DC need to stop being so transparent in treating comics and their characters as products or at least change the way they do it.
Harry Potter is commercial as fuck, but when the story was over Howling didn't start over with a twist or start writing about the next year of students.
Stop rebooting shit.
Stop using the same characters for 70 years.
Give people faith that a story will actually end.

1. Complete rehaul of current distribution model. Don't hide comic books from people. That's fucking stupid and I can't believe anyone ever thought it was a good idea.

2. More diverse content. Let cape books die out completely, for all I care. There used to be detective comics, horror comics, military comics, all from big name publishers. Honestly I think THAT'S how you get broader readership, not SJW/diversity quota nonsense.

3. Fewer 'events' and more self-contained stories. Following comics demands a near masochistic level of loyalty sometimes. Remove that from the equation and catch people's temporary fancies.

It is and has been for decades.
The world isn't just USA, remember?
Comics are big in France and Belgium for instance.

This. the comic-book medium dragged capes down for decades, people just don't like comics, and they probably never will.

Nothing? Comics are already legitimized and anyone who dismisses an entire genre that is basically just "writing + art" is a retard that you shouldn't give any sway to

medium* not genre

well, user. when the writting is shit and the art is okay at best for years straight. you can't really blame people for dismissing an medium that loves to keep shooting itself on the foot and do a shitty reboot to please people on their 30s-40s. that will reuse the alot of old concepts that most already didn't liked or are too old fashioned to wake up any interest on it.
there's a reason why movies and games of comic books are more popular.
the comic book industry got itself in an corner just like the anime, games and light novel industry in japan.

>Fewer 'events' and more self-contained stories
This. If you are so hell-bent on making a shared universe, don't make it so obvious. I've found that shared universes are more popular with hardcore fans when they are just implied. Having the X-men share the universe with the Avengers directly is convoluted and contradicts a lot of the lore of each series. But merely implying that Gravity Falls and Rick & Morty exist in the same multiverse through a fucking cup lets the imagination of the fans run wild to fill the gaps. This makes them feel included AND you liberate yourself of having to explain shit or create a complex scheme of things to make both series fit in the same lore.

Story and consistency must be valued above all else. Publishers should treat comics like (good) novels or films. Authorship and the appreciation thereof needs to be cultivated.
No more retconning deaths, no more infinite string along status quo preserving bullshit with ever new #1s.
The medium needs progression and story developments need to feel like they matter.

Writing and publishing for trades may be a way.

I'm already mad that Galactus will lost his Life Bringer status, Psihawk and Prime Ego will go back to limbo soon to preserve that shitty status quo

The only way for anyone to see something as legitimate is to actually experience it themselves. People need to actually read this stuff to decide if they like it. Comics currently are a pain in the ass to get into a regular person's hands because they're largely sold in specialty shops, of which they are few.

Like most of the problems in the industry it comes down to the need to dismantle the direct market.

This is something the corporations that own the Big Two, ESPECIALLY Disney, could do this pretty much any time they wanted. Hell, they could probably take over their comic distribution entirely themselves with their money. But they aren't interested in legitimizing comics as an art form or really even selling comics at all, just having them as an IP farm for the much more immediately financially successful film franchises.

it's legitimate! It's as legitimate as it's ever going to be.

Your dad is never going to respect or appreciate books with drawings or animated films though, that's the thing. I think that's what you really mean with "legitimate". Our dad's are never going to get into it, and it's already as respected by our generation as it can be.

Erase continuity heavy stories, with almost 100 years of history behind them, comics tend to get bogged down in small details, instead make them more like anthology or multiverse stories, let any writer choose any bits and pieces of history they want, you want there to be only one robin? ok, you want Superman to still be pining for Lois instead of married to her? alright. Let the creators pick the history, they have a multiverse, its time to use it.

Also for gods sakes start selling them outside of specialty stores again, sell them at places teenagers frequent, Gamestops, racks at the grocery store, etc.

You can never take the children out of comics, comics will always be attached to childish things, what you can do is raise the bar, no more schlock no more shame

you are a weak pathetic faggot....

Comics, even though theyre a seperate subsection.. are BOOKS.. MANY MANY PEOPLE READ BOOKS.

And believe it or not the two cross over a ton... do you sit in paranoia wondering when you read a fantasy/sci-fi/crime novel if its acceptable to other people?

>If suddenly we turned Batman into a racist, nationalist, anti-immigrant, ethnocentrist?

....Ehh, he's not THAT far off... see if you wanted a good example you should have picked like, Superman, or Hal

For all of them to go the way of Image Comics and have independent universes with infrequent crossovers.

>now he's black. for no reason.

>hello I am from Sup Forums and I *literally* read every comic.

>sell them at places teenagers frequent, Gamestops, racks at the grocery store, etc.

Ooooooorrr..... god forbid.. MOVIE THEATRES!?!?!

No wait, what in the blue fuck am I talking about thats just insane.

They are already legitimate. They have powerfully moving narratives and adding pictures to words is one of the oldest forms of storytelling.

No, but those are inherently evil characteristics. I would be fine if a non intelligent super villian turned into one of these guys though. Penguin maybe.

Is anyone here buy that real book he did? Its over 1000 pages long

Fire everyone who was even remotely involved in the creation of this issue and have their hands chopped off so they may never create anything like it ever again.

The manga industry is still alive and well though.

How can we steal those customers?

>all comic books are cape comics specifically by the big two
neck yourself

>The manga industry is still alive and well though.
>How can we steal those customers?
By doing what Japan is doing, i.e. sell the damn things in regular stores.

What is this shit?

Bendis

So fucking stupid lol.

>Not on social scale.
What the flying shaved goose do you mean?

No one pelts you with tomatoes when you read one. What? You want people to think that reading comics somehow deep and meaningful? For it to be accepted as a high form of literature?

>alt-right ideologies being vindicated in comics?
Or just present differing ideas and see how it holds up and stop treating people like they are retards who can't think for themselves and only see in two colours.

also dropping color for more content at a more affordable price is a big deal

Do what Japan does.
Creator ownership of characters.
Give people a year run.
Did it sell well?
Give them another year.
Did it not sell very well?
Publish another person's work.

Maybe instead of hiring women who can't draw or write, they instead get their own Clamp/ShojoBeat type of publisher.
Is nobody reading it?
Then you need to figure out what girls want to read about the secret is romance, they like romance, they're girls, they love reverse with self-insert brunette like in Twilight

Instead people feel "invested" in centuries old IPs which are and can only be described at this point in time as official sanctioned fanfiction.
Fanfiction tantamount to pissy blog posts by of out of touch liberal faggots.

>Or just present differing ideas and see how it holds up and stop treating people like they are retards who can't think for themselves and only see in two colours.
My understanding is that Americans have convinced themselves that Fascism is Leftist and that the more Right they go the better. So as far as I can tell America sees only one colour.

You can't just post shit like that without providing source.
I think the cape movies are kinda recruiting more people on buying comics, then again there's a huge stigma regarding comic books where only children read them.

>japanese politicians are inherently evil for not wanting japan to look like malaysia

Actually the only inherently evil person in this thread is you

So the other retarded fatfucks who condemn the right are not Americans?

>So the other retarded fatfucks who condemn the right are not Americans?
Democrats are very Right. They don't even support Single Player. America has Right and crazy-Right.

>but those are inherently evil characteristics

Do teenagers really need to buy comics anymore if they can simply read it on their smart phones and download/pirate it for free?

the big two and its business model is what kills any chance for comics to go mainstream, because these are the only thing people see when they think about comics, the big two with all its issues. Like continuity issues or overall the vast majority of horrible comics evenmore so for normies, as the only thing they see are models in spandex and silly costumes doing cringy shit, which is even more cringy when the comics try to be serious.

The movies and specially marvel movies work because they are hughly self-aware, so people think its just either mindless entertainment or its not different than liking any other childrens movies like Toy Story or Zootopia, which in their mind is just a better written childrens movie which makes it okay to appreciate it as an adult.

It's pretty legitimate in other places that are not the US.
In order for it to be better considered in the US, they'd have to go away from Marvel/DC superhero stuff and give more of a spotlight to other genres, so people don't think comics are a genre on themselves, but simply a medium that can be used to tell all sorts of stories.
It's slowly happening, but as always, the US is years behind the rest of the world when it comes to comics.

Stop trying to desperately be legitimized.

NON-COMICS READER HERE, SO I CAN PROVIDE SOME INSIGHT ON THE GENERAL PUBLIC'S PERCEPTION.

I FREQUENTLY SEE COMICS POSTED ON Sup Forums OR OTHER BOARDS, AND I'M AMAZED HOW BAD THEY ALL ARE.

THIS IS WHAT COMICS NEED TO BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY:
>remove ALL political content, no exceptions (seriously modern comics are like political pamphlets, you guys should be embarrassed to read this shit)
>learn to fucking draw (not even kidding, do they let literal retards draw comics nowadays?)
>stop it with the artsy fartsy faggotry (when every superhero comic is power level wankery and high concept weirdness it makes everything seem like fedora faggotry)
>write stories instead of conversations (all anyone ever does is talk)
>make the stories self-contained purchases, so it's either a 1 issue story or it's those book-sized things (there's no reason why anyone should have to buy a story in chunks, they need to get the full thing with a single purchase)
>make them cheaper (isn't it like $5-8 for a comic or something ridiculous?)
>cut out ALL the hipster faggotry, no exceptions (giving everyone a sidecut and pink hair just makes normal people roll their eyes)
>don't be afraid to "offend" people/make politically incorrect content so long as it isn't POLITICAL content (the ultimate sign of maturity of any medium is when it can acknowledge reality without having to have an opinion on it)
>stop hiring weirdos (seriously, why the fuck does every comics person look like they're either tumblr or an old goth/hippie?)
>stop making everything R-rated (none of the comics I've seen in recent years are appropriate for kids, this just makes comics fans look like fedoras with no self-awareness or understanding of what's appropriate social behavior)

cont.

>stop making everything sissy shit (comics nowadays all look like they were made for fat neckbeards that never go outside or have jobs or have ever been laid)
>bring back TITS AND ASS (no medium that is taken seriously is afraid of the human body, but the only time comics are ever in the news anymore is when they're being censored because a female wasn't drawn fat or with negative ass or something [this doesn't mean "porn", it just means "stop censoring" because no one wants to read a censored medium])
>start making comics for actual females (this means normal females who aren't tumblr sjws, so like fashion and romance and fantasy and sparkling vampires [lol] or whatever other shit females are into)
>hire actual funny comedy writers (every comic I see that tries to be funny is just cringe-inducing reddit tier "humor")
>make some fucking genres other than sci-fi and superheroes
>stop using the phrase "capeshit", it makes you all sound like fags
>stop replacing superheroes (if I buy a comic it had fucking BETTER have the title character in it, otherwise you're just ripping me off [seriously, this is borderline criminal fraud as far as I'm concerned])
>stop making the comics completely different from the movies
>stop making movies so bad that it stigmatizes the comics by association (I'm referring specifically to DC movies)
>make new characters (aren't all the superheroes from the 60s? fucking WHY.jpg has there been no new characters since then?)

Why does anyone want to make comics a more popular medium? The only thing stupid with comics is the political pamphlet thing. And only Marvel is really the main culprit behind this. DC at least sticks to being about the story.

And we have a winner

The monopoly on distribution (what's the company called, Diamond?) is absurd and an american-only thing. When i started buying comics as a kid it's because i got curious randomly noticing them in the book sections of supermarkets, newspaper stands and stuff, am i getting this wrong or does this not happen in America?

Also, the format, big 2 comics cost, what, 4 dollars each? But that's just a single issue, right? Here in Italy for a similar price when i buy a Batman inside i also find Gotham's Knight and Nightwing. It's like the manga distribution, i buy a book and find multiple stories, i have less reasons to feel ripped off afterwards, i can follow multiple ongoings without spending too much money. Although the disadvantage of that is that you often can't buy a character's book without technically paying for others you're maybe not interested in. One of the reasons i never bought, for example, Ms Marvel or Vision it's because they were inserted in the general Avengers book i didn't care about. But you can also happily discover something unexpected, like suddenly having the short Loners run in Spiderman comics, which i probably would've ignored otherwise

But that's just about the distribution. Like many others pointed out ITT i think cape comics are flawed the way they are conceived

Draw more tits

Yeah. Here in Germany you can buy for example the Micky Mouse paper for like three bucks with several stories from Don Rosa to others, with aditional stuff like child news, riddles, infos and jokes AND some cheaply produced toy shit that sometimes was rally neat!
How could a single issue of a comic book for the same price compeate?

Because going mainstream allows the actual niche stuff within the niche to flourish/get more attention, its like the anime industrie were mostly otakus who like the most generic stuff go into the industry and create again generic stuff for the next generation of manchildren, causing the industry to never move forwards substantially, of course you always have the flavor of the month ideas and current topics but those are tackled by people who grew up with the big two with all its issues, so they have very limited ways of how to handle new topics, always the same solutions with little to no inspiration from outside when it comes to storytelling and continuous re-cycling of ideas.

>The only thing stupid with comics is the political pamphlet thing
>The only thing

Half your points are sensible and half are dumb fuckin rambling.

>remove all political content
>from superhero comics
>everything else just gets worse from there.

how does sandman make it in

like it's a nice collection of great stories but it has nowhere near the same depth as something like watchmen or the invisibles

that's a non-comics reader telling you what comics look like to non-comics readers

even if you don't share their taste, the fact of the matter is that they're explaining how the general public sees comics and why they don't buy them or take them seriously

Start wrtting things that someone over 25 won't be embarrassed to tell someone they read.

I mean, wasn't that basically a part of DKR?

What? Being racist is not only evil, it is legitimately stupid. Voting for rich white guys that have built up a fortune by shitting on the little guy and expecting them to give two fucks about the average person is moronic.
I don't understand what's hard to understand.
Someone who believes all life is valuable = good
Someone who thinks the only people that matter are people who hold similar backgrounds = ignorant or willfully hateful.

ban capeshit

racism is bad for cultures where many races have intermingled for generations and depend heavily on decentralized global trade between nations, like the US.

Countries like japan that have a virtually homogenous society and are mostly self dependant would be destroyed if they weren't at least a little racist. It's their homeland, and imparting how they should or shouldn't act towards foreigners is, ironically enough, your own western imperialism showing.

There's nothing shameful in holding out for your home team, if you have one that's been winning for generations. There's nothing evil about wanting your kin to do well and not let them get bullied around by other people who know nothing about you and don't care about you, and for how much westerners say they support that, you've done nothing but force your idealistic and harmful melting pot experiment that worked in your countries and forced it on everyone else. Arabs want you to fuck off, Africans want you to fuck off, asians want you to fuck off, south americans want you to fuck off. But you fuck up different countries and then lure the best people to move to your western countries, abandoning countries that need stellar people, and you say you're "helping".

Fuck you, your forced racial tolerance is just sugarcoated racial imperialism, your liberal ideology is parasitism that destroys cultures, you've done nothing but rape the other people's of the earth and claim yourself a good saint, but you're nothing more than a lying snake.

Fuck you, you're the evil one. You've betrayed your people and spoiled it for the rest of us you fucking liar. You don't even have the decency to act like the pillaging conqueror you are.

> People I agree with = good
> People I disagree with = evil

Your lack of self awareness is astounding.

The UK has those combo issues too. I grew up in the middle of nowhere and every newsagent had them, 2000ad too.

Turn it into VIDEO GAMES. Then surely the academia will approve of it.

That's funny because sequential art is involved with, and contains part of all of those things you mentioned. Comic books are an intrinsic part of film making, they require graphic design for layouts and presentation and would be kind of pointless without literature.
Maybe we should accept them as a mix of those things instead of an art out of itself, like with theatre.

To have fun and stop trying to be a movie/tv show.

Feels like ever comic trying to get a movie/tv deal or be a meme.
