From what I remember at the end of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, the sequel to a universal reboot, Spyro and Cynder were transported to an alternate world. Which can be presumed to be Skylands.

I ain't seeing much risk in adding characters that people probably wanted in the first place. Goodness knows they crank out new characters like Pokemon anyway, so getting the classic series characters will just save them some time.
