I swore there was some interview where Jim Davis admitted that Garfield was done purely for the money, he was competent enough to gauge the market and produce a product inoffensive enough to be everywhere and hitting the proper signifiers to appeal to a broad audience.
But I can't produce a source for that, so maybe it was hearsay or at worst a misremembered parody article.

None the less, the market for newspaper comics is profoundly different than other comic markets. Like the exact opposite of how modern Marvel editorial tries to work.
