It's been obvious from the word "go" that this movie is a big scam/experiment.
The idea was to make an idea for a movie so fucking bizarre that people would see it simply out of fascination for how it could possibly be done.
Ghostbusters wasn't a success but they DID notice that the "controversy" around it got it lots of free advertising. I imagine the idea here is to do the same thing but for a movie without a horribly inflated budget.
We live in the Meme Age where advertising/zeitgeist is more important than actual content, at least in the US. It's the next stage of movies being made for trailers first.
