This. This right here is what kills the book for me. This is actually a reasonably strong opening that does a good job of establishing the characters and the conflict.
And then it's like the thing goes out of its way to completely ruin it. "Hey, that was an emotionally gripping and well done intro. How can we fuck it up?". Goddamn.

Huge credit to Dinah here, letting that comment slide. Especially given that she had once adopted a kid, but had to let her go.
Again, there are good moments, including this one, constantly being undermined by everything else. It's perfectly understandable that Roy is lashing out, but the problem is that he doesn't stop doing that.
And if this was supposed to be a straight tragedy, of a hero losing his way due to personal loss destroying his mind, well it was poorly done.
