To answer your question, there's a couple reasons. First off, they're actually 20-21 years old, and they're currently running their own mercenary business of sorts.
Secondly, they're following in the footsteps of their mother Kablammica, an extremely well-renowned ex-adventurer, and while their father Norman, a simple broccoli farmer, does worry about them and would've preferred if they stayed working with him on the farm, he knows that it's what they want to do more than anything and that they can protect each other.
TL;DR: They're actually adults, not teenagers, and their mother was also an adventurer.

They're probably trying to avoid the whole problem Adventure Time came across where it became less goofy adventures and more lore driven.
However, they do occasionally hint at small bits of lore just the right amount if you pay attention, so as not to detract from the show but rather enhance it. Most recent example being that it was revealed legendary magiswords are a thing, but still leaving it a mystery what exactly they are.
