Is Akira Sup Forums too? Marvel published it in the 90s
Asher Rodriguez
You're not going to get a mind linked Batou experiencing the major's lesbian orgasm while on a reconnaissance mission in the jungle watching the cartoon user.
Austin Peterson
Did this page got removed in the newer prints? Mine doesn't have it

They are completely and absolutely different. Ghost in the Shell anime aren't really 'adaptations' the way you would traditionally understand them. They adapt the concept, the world, the characters - but not the story. Quoting the manga author, Masamune Shirow: >The manga of Ghost In The Shell didn't place importance on its sustainability as a series because it is faithful to the idea that works in different media, be it film, tv series, manga or novel, should each be optimized to its own art form. Creators of GitS don't want to tell the same story over and over, they want to tell a story best suited to the artform this installment of the franchise is in. It's kinda like asking what is better - Captain America movies or comics? The answer would be, they have similarities but are completely different.
So I recommend checking out both. The original comic is pretty great, so is the sequel 1.5 Human Error Processor - just stay away from 2.0 Man Machine Interface, plot is hard to comprehend (idk if it's a result of bad writing or botched translation by Dark Horse). From anime, watch the first two movies, and the anime Stand Alone Complex series, they're also pretty great.
You can freely ignore Arise anime, Arise comic and The New Movie (which is set in Arise continuity) - it's okay, but won't blow you out of the water.
Definitely ignore the live action movie with ScarJo, it's trash.
Benjamin Hernandez
As someone who has experienced every Ghost in the Shell thing except Arise I'm going to tell you just to stick with Stand Alone Complex.
Jose Walker
I don't think it is in American prints
Lincoln Rodriguez
>Definitely ignore the live action movie with ScarJo, it's trash.
For sure. The only ONE redeeming factor was that they had recreated a few iconic scenes from the original movie, which is nice for fans but it's sad that it had to happen in such a crap movie
Isaiah Hughes
I'd watch the 1995 film & Stand Alone Complex. The Manga is slow as fuck & makes the cast unlikeable.
I think the manga is good for what it is and you can see where the movies and SAC pulled a lot of their reference material. But manga Major is hard to deal with when you're used to the more serious portrayals in the rest of the franchise.
Daniel Long
I love Manga Motoko.
She's Bestoko.
Ethan Cooper
...
Elijah Mitchell
Yeah, the compiled print by I think Kadokawa (flipped) didn't have this.
Josiah Nelson
Reminder : The Major referred to this as her "side business".
Josiah Taylor
It's in my Dark Horse Print.
I just want an unflipped version of the original manga with the scenes in there. How hard is it for a publisher to do that? All the other Shirow stuff I have is uncensored and unflipped.
Luke Ward
Well, when you have such a beautiful body it's a shame not to make use of it!
Nathan Parker
No that was one of the most insulting things about it. It recreated iconic scenes but clearly had no idea what made them iconic to begin with
The garbage man scene is a great example of this. They had no idea what made these scenes work to begin with and just cynically throes them in to appease fans.
Andrew Gutierrez
Pretty much.

Josiah Stewart
Well we tried that and people got really pissed off
Jason Long
It would be cool if the next GITS anime was closer to the manga in both design and tone.
It would also be nice if Shirow took a break from porn to do some manga again. Maybe finish Appleseed or do something with his Neurohard series. I like the porn I really do but damn, nigga draw some fucking manga already
Jason Ortiz
Definitely. The time is ripe for the REAL Motoko to make her come back!
Ryder Diaz
I'm actually in the process of watching SAC for the first time right now, and while it's pretty good I'm having a hard time seeing what the huge deal is. With the 1995 movie I totally get it - it's dripping with aesthetics and atmosphere, and manages to hit on a lot of themes with exceptional skill. However the anime just feels a lot more toned down and generic. I'm only on episode 7 right now, but does it get better later on?
Adrian Hall
I loved it from the start, but yeah, things start to escalate.
Connor Thompson
>Sup Forums doesn't have good shit so they have to steal from Sup Forums fuck off
Elijah Miller
Don't be a meanie. Everyone can learn to love the Major.
Luke Ross
Major in the comics and anime are so different it's crazy. This Major wouldn't have asked the kid if he wanted to find out, she'd have shown him either way.
Henry Green
Motoko's not THAT lewd.
She'd at least ask for cash first.
Isaiah Reyes
Isn't Kodansha Comics doing a GITS anthology with Western talent?
Nathaniel Baker
I don't like how disrespectful she is to the Chief. That's why SACtoko is Bestoko.
Xavier Brooks
>Implying that old gorilla is worthy of respect.
Kevin Rogers
SAC's whole premise is "The glory days of Section 9 before Motoko becomes clinically depressed," so it's not as moody and atmospheric. It's more of a police procedural, but once the Laughing Man story kicks in, it's great. I know some people have problems with the stand alone episodes, but I love the worldbuiding.
Aaron Myers
I like to believe this ad from a magazine was the sole reason I ever had any interest in finding out about Ghost in the Shell.
Anyone ever play the PSX game? I thought it was pretty good, hell the soundtrack was amazing.
Cooper Hughes
I haven't, but the cutscenes from that game are way higher-quality than they had any right to be. youtube.com/watch?v=iTkOvNDhO_Y
Kayden Parker
SAC major never becomes clinically depressed.
Gavin Thompson
I know, but the original pitch for the show was Motoko before she becomes the moody, withdrawn person from the movie, even if they aren't technically the same character.
Lucas Ortiz
I have. It's a fantastic game.
Hunter Morris
I forgot how not as good as SAC's the Major's "original" voice was.
Parker Gonzalez
It does get better, I suppose. Part of the praise comes form the fact that it's also more action-y and it's well animated.
Justin Sanders
Yeah. My one wish is that they would re-dub the original GitS, but only to change the Major's voice to Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. She already voices movie Motoko in Innocence.
Michael Martinez
It's why it fucking irks me whenever they say "oh, they based it on Ultimate universe".
Dude, they just drawn different ideas from all sorts of comics for inspiration only, MCU isn't adapting any comics, it's inspired by certain elements to a different extend.
Ultimate Spider-man wasn't meddling with Tony Stark until in his 100s issues, jesus christ, pick up a comic to talk about comics Tom.
Jacob Morales

Adrian Campbell
Eh, at this stage it's best left alone.

There completely different telling totally different stories. I recommend both the manga, first movie, the TV series (SAC & 2ND GIG). Other than those i don't recommend the other installments in the series.
Caleb Price
Don't forget SSS. It's a decent SAC entry.
Also 1.5 is good
2.0 is rubish. It's post-Kobe shirow and that never ends well.
Colton Smith
I think SSS is the weakest of SAC, though it's grown on me after I've watched it a couple times. I do prefer the Major's outfit in it to any of her others in SAC, though.
Landon Sanchez
The coat's great but the rest of it is meh.
Personally I love the white SWAT outfit from the manga.
Adam Gonzalez
You must have been really disappointed when she wore it for like 2 seconds at the end of 2nd Gig, and then never again.
I think I prefer the black swat outfit from SAC. The white swat outfit just looks like a puffy life jacket.
Austin Hill
It looks better in the manga, I'll admit.
Lucas Bailey
> It's Sup Forums because Sup Forums is mean to me :'(
Fuck off.
Evan Williams
Sup Forums, why are you the worst board on Sup Forums?
Colton Allen
All three are good, to the point that GitS is my go-to example for illustrating the concept of a triple crown (the rare case of an IP that has good entries in three different mediums).
The comic is the closest to classic 80's cyberpunk. Expect guns, violence, titties, and a world where the only difference between a terrorist and a government agent is who writes their paycheck.
The Oshii movies lean into the Noir/Existentialist/Buddhist elements of cyberpunk. Sparse periods of intense action punctuate dialog and visuals reminiscent of Burroughs' cut-up technique, where old quotes/imagery are rearranged to form entirely different meanings.
The anime is possibly the defining work of postcyberpunk, where the "punk" elements have mellowed due to a world where technology hasn't fundamentally changed human society and results tend to matter more than ideology.
Parker Anderson
That's not how you spell /fa/
Jaxson Ross
God damn the Major is looking good in those tight suits
Nathan Campbell
Anyone have a .cbr download for the manga? This thread is giving me a hankering to give it another read.
Ethan Sullivan
Because if you give an inch they'll take a mile. We keep getting all kind of shit spammed because "c-co is l-love" and people refusing to discuss things where they belong.
Logan Diaz
Well maybe if you weren't so Sup Forumslite you could actually have discussions about comics rather than pickles and white genocide.
Brandon Cooper
or, you know, people could strop trying to spam
> bnha > jjba > akira > hey Sup Forums, how would you make a comic out of _____ (inssert videogame/anime/manga) here. > worm > non comic/cartoon capeshit
and so on.
Nathan Lopez
Yep. We need another Sneed thread.
Anthony Cruz
I'll accept GitS before I accept the constant spamming of race swaping in live action
Grayson Martin
>Sup Forums won't talk about GitS
Dude, don't be silly. GitS is one of the few franchises beloved by pretty much all of Sup Forums.
Anyway, watch the first movie and then the Stand Alone Complex series. These are the best entries in the franchise, IMO. Be aware that no continuity it really shared between them - the various GitS adaptations are really different takes on the same concept, with the same characters, but different circumstances and specific stories.
Don't watch the SJo movie.
Adrian Stewart
I know this will sound weird, but I can't decide whether I like Stand Alone Complex. It kept me interested enough to keep watching, but I never felt like I got super invested in the characters
the characters are second to the political intrigue and world building. one of the reasons Arise fails so much is it tried to make it into a story about Motoko.
Jordan Phillips
I don't know, that's actually one of the things I like about SAC. The characters all feel like well-adjusted adult professionals, so there's not much, if any, personal drama like you'd find in a lot of other anime.
Adam Robinson
>Did this page got removed in the newer prints? No. The first official translation took it out, the second official translation put it back in, and Kadokawa bought the rights to the first translation and reprints that now.
Adrian Price
SAC sucks. It's not faithful to the comics at all. The characters are too flat and stern. None of them have the sense of realistic humor that the comic versions have. Hell, the Tachikomas feel out of place, even though their depiction is faithful, because the rest of the show is so serious. It's painfully obvious that it wasn't done by the original creator.
Carter Green
The '95 movie is even more serious and that's the best version of the material
