I don't think other blockbusters are smart, I just think they've done much better spins on the concept than Transformers.
The plot isn't the only thing that matters in a film. Often it isn't even the most important thing. I'd argue that HOW you tell a story is more important than the basic structure of the story itself.

First movie was a pretty decent flick
In terms of looks, I prefer Carly, but Mikaela obviously has the personality, which makes her better overall.

In terms of technical aspects they are in no way lazy. The first movie is a decade old and still looks better than a lot of blockbusters that come out nowadays
