Native American Archetype

Are they now considered racist?

I'm Thinking of writing a shaman character he will be the psychic of the group
Think of Nightwolf and T.hawk

Alpha Flight has a character exactly like that. But he is their doctor strange.

Just don't make them red and go HOHOHOHOHOOHOHOHOHOHO! Or give them arrows.

Why?
Not even psychic arrows or someshit?

I was just thinking about these the other day. My sister mentioned some Marvel character, and said it was one of the Native guys, but couldn't remember the name. I figured, list can't be that long, so I googled it.
Apparently the list is simultaneously really fucking shot, and extremely long, because I started reading out the same names over and over and over.
Not quite sure why they couldn't just figure out a system of having "Forge: 2149, 807128,61029,etc" but it did give me a giggle.
marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Native_Americans

He should pissed at racists assuming he must use arrows. He actually uses throwing axes.

If you're ignorant as shit about Native Americans, their culture, their history and who there are as a people then yes, it's probably gonna come out racist as hell. If you know anything about what you're trying to write about it will probably come out ok.

T. Hawk from Street Fighter is actually Mexican.

Native Americans in Mexico and Canada are still Native Americans. "America" can be taken to mean either "the United States of..." or the continents.

Marvel is both ignorant and uncreative, yes.

>Are they considered racist?
When they have no defining character outside being Native American, yes. It also helps to assign them a specific tribe, instead of that made up homogenous bullshit Hollywood likes to pretend exists.

And try to avoid any stereotypical bullshit with the powers. Telepathy is fairly universal, so no problem there. But no spirits, please. Even if their tribe is one that does worship spirits, it's just obnoxious as fuck. Or hell, make it a joke, where everyone else snickers during prayer, but the character is like "Fuck you, don't mock my religion.".

Also no, you don't HAVE to explore the character's roots and modern cultural status, but if you want to, do some research.

You can't write a Native American character unless you're one, yourself, or else it's appropriation.

You need to pay an actual Native American to write that character for you. The same goes with all the other nationalities and genders. And if you don't include other nationalities and genders, you're a racist.

Happy writing :)

As a ginger, I am offended when these brunettes think they can speak for me and my peoples.

>archery is deeply culturally and historically significant to native cultures
>It's considered 'racist' to portray a native character as an archer
>archery is deeply culturally and historically significant to European culture
>There are dozens of badass white archers in media

Is this manufactured outrage by libtards?

Write the character as intended, but have him/her be white. Then step back and ask if it is more or less offensive.

Holy fuck this post is blowing my mind with its cutting edge mind blowing satire

It has more to do with Native American characters having no defining characteristic outside of being Native American, like mentions. Them being archers is merely a part of them being Native American, as oppose to a person with Native American ancestry.

I kind of had an idea for a superhero team that is basically formed by the US government as propaganda, to serve as a symbol of them being prepared to deal with the rising amount of supers in the modern age.

Part of the public image is hitting certain requisites in membership, so they've got a female speedster from another superhuman project, a "cool & patriotic" bucky-style teenager to appeal to the youth that is secretly an artificially created clone soldier, a black man taken from the Giants program, and a native american taken from the secret MiB-esque department that deals with supernatural issues.

He is a generalist magic-user and occult researcher/investigator, also has a fairly cliche inherent magical superpower in that he can control and see through animals (and forcefully read human minds) that came from an ancestor of his bloodline making a deal with a supernatural entity, and it was in having this ability that first led him down the path of becoming a student of magic to better understand it, would have researched all sorts of magical theories and had various mentors in the occult community.

Am considering how hamhandedly the government are going to be in designing his superhero persona, really get across that they are treating this whole thing as a promotional stunt than a legit groups. Will they literally give him the codename "Shaman" despite the fact he isn't actually a Shaman?
For his part he can't be bothered with any of this shit and would rather get on with his job or his studies.

Its actually kind of shocking how much gingers can face discrimination in places

Not to mention the constant reallocation of ginger roles in Hollywood.

It's probably a little racist. Mostly it's just lazy. But the laziest thing is giving them weather or elemental powers. That's pretty much the native american equivalent of giving a black hero electric powers

The Marvel wiki's multiverse-based page dividing is an unreadable shitshow.

Now imagine if literally every white character ever conceived was an archer named John Smith hailing from "Europe", with the actual country of origin never being mentioned because they're all too similar, and all their designs and outfits were variations of rosaries, 17th century wigs, and ancient Greek togas.

...

>Two young men

The dude's gay?

Sounds like your literally doing Nightwolf, m8

>>archery is deeply culturally and historically significant to native cultures

So was poison. Thing was that guns were better than poisoned arrows.

So exactly like anime?

They don't mind, they don't have souls

or how about being original and having their powers be completely unrelated to their ethnicity? no stereotypical crap like every other japanese character being a "rising sun" motif with fire/light powers.

just give a native american a cool powerset. they could be a trained vigilante like the bat-family. a genius inventor like reed or hank or tony, doom or lex. a mutant with optic blasts or magnetic control. recruited into a space militia like the green lanterns or nova corps. literally anything *but* nature-themed, magic-themed stereotypes.

reminds me of similar behavior in D&D when people want to play oddball races as shorthand for characterization. Instead of making a quirky human who doesn't understand personal boundaries, i'll play a generic kender! Its lazy storytelling, a crutch.

No one gives a fuck about natives
Not even SJW

That's even more racist lol

Do they really hate the spirit thing

Shaman king was dope

>Do they really hate the spirit thing
Dunno, but I do.

>have Native character
>can't be arsed to make them a real character or give them interesting abilities
>LOL SPIRITS!!!
Fuck that lazy whoreshit.

Apache Chief ?
>pissed
no. best way is to avoid the race issue.
so don't write them like young justice

well he is fucked because there is no such thing as Native Americans, its a label for a large group that each has its on culture, history, etc

Are the water tribe Asian Eskimos or Native Americans?

>Do they really hate the spirit thing
Who is they? Do white people hate black man X white woman parings on tv?

that is because they are the soul

and yet they're the very first to blame when anyone brings up native stuff like "redskins" and film depictions.

I want to see someone make a comic off of the legends of the various tribes in their time.

natives don't give a fuck. SJW use the natives when they feel like it and some native actors sometimes make noise because it helps them get jobs. I would not be surprised if someone was inline to make money on that redskins thing

>bucky style
A depressed tormented emo?

Make him a Chad

they are nonsense. fun shot stories for but nothing cohesive. a lot of it is unPC,etc basically like Norse legends, it most cases the suspension of disbelief can't go that far. whatever elements are interesting has been beaten to death on screen,

The natives

I think everyone hates that pairing not just whites

sorry bro. If you are interested, take a look at
Heroes Rise by choiceofgames and Almost Infamous: A Supervillain Novel

It was a rhetorical question. The point is that both groups are not monoliths

To be fair, Nightwolf's deal is that he's the good version of an evil power.

Shao Kahn came first and makes GL-style constructs and shadow-afterimages by using stolen souls.

Nightwolf does the same thing except he doesn't steal the souls, he borrows the power from his ancestors.

Granted Johnny Cage came before both of them and does what Nightwolf does without being an Indian stereotype...but they didn't explain his origin until 6 years ago.

It honestly depends on the delivery. Chief Thunder in the KI reboot is far bettee than his orginal because they went the extra mile research and design wise. Being intimidating as hell and having one of the best tracks also worked in his favor.

why? I don't remember people shitposting about Luke Cage banging Claire or Matt banging Clair in the MCU

Its so unnatural and forced and porny

Nothing wrong with making a Native American superhero with spirit shit and archery, just don't make them all that. Nothing wrong with making Asian superhero with genius intellect and kung fu, just don't make them all that. etc. etc.

Johnny Cage being descended from a Mediterranean warrior cult that were bred to defeat gods with their special energy powers is fucking stupid.

What was wrong with his backstory about being an actor that could actually use ki moves from his martial arts and wanted to prove he was no phony by taking part in this tournament he was told about.
Its not like any of the other humans need supernatural blood to explain why they can shoot lasers/fire from their hands, Sonya Blade managed it just by being in the army, they taught her how to shoot deadly kisses at people!

>Nothing wrong with making a Native American superhero with spirit shit and archery, just don't make them all that. Nothing wrong with making Asian superhero with genius intellect and kung fu, just don't make them all that. etc. etc.

Have the spirit of his ancestor at his side, an actual old-style shaman, chastising him and giving funny opinions on everything.

Sighing every time he brings a demonic spell without proper protection, suggesting alternatives based on their much safer gods (well, some of them), wondering what's with these kids and their loud parties and why is the youth so [insert very wrong/dated opinion] in these times.

This is discouraging just make the the character white OP

>anons respond more positively here to the gay equivalent
really fires up the neurons

Research. You will find interesting stuff that will give your character a more rounded and more interesting background, and give you ideas for other stuff.

This is actually interesting.

I would like to see the juxtaposition and tension between the old tribal magic (nahualism?) & foreign, more occult forms, how they can sometimes work together or how sometimes they interfere with each other.

And so the effects on the character himself as a person (how he regards his or her own culture and those of his or her teachers, and the values he learned from each).

Make sure you give them a specific tribe and do actual research, but much like anything else some people will bitch on principle and other people will judge you based on the execution. Don't worry about the first group and do your best to avoid anything cringey so the second group doesn't have reason to turn on you.

Lemire had a native girl in JLU with nature powers and no one minded because it was done respectfully.

Race mixing gays are double the degeneracy

How can they be racemixing if they can't impregnate each other?

>be native
>get excited when a native character shows up
>tfw PC police tell everyone it's bad to do this
>tfw no more native characters
Fuck you people

I don't know user, the thread on the right was relatively civil

Dani wasn't exactly an archetype. She grew among other native families and came to the mansion with a bit of native nationalism, but it never went beyond her personal quirk. In New Mutants she has exactly two arcs about them, one being the physic bear and the other a personal problem a childhood friend.

gringos have now reached the point that any portrayal of minorities that isn't modern and overtly poitive is racist no matter how historically acurrate or accepted within the minority itself it is. basically, people only want token minorities.

But from what i've seen, natives are generally well recieved if done properly

depends on the period. Many native american cultures used sligshot,

Reminder that Turok got Blackwashed because Native American characters are racist

OP is making a live action appearance at least
hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/foxs-new-mutants-casts-newcomer-blu-hunt-danielle-moonstar-role-1009703

All of the above. It was their way to put a large society of brown people into the show. To avoid being racist in any way, they stuck them as far away from the hot, sunny regions of the world... where they would get dark skin like that in the first place.

Fucking hell

I mean it's true even if it isn't the point. Runaways was similar.

Santa?

Still doesn't make it right nor accepted
Gays in real life notoriously hate niggers

I wasn't making a case for or against, user.

Niggers or black people? or are we just dropping the pretense? if so can we extend that to all groups with negative reputations?

Apart from the chin Milo would make a pretty girl.
>tfw no provocative shitposting rightwing gf

How the fuck is it unnatural? Go outside, there's plenty of interracial relationships.

>porny
so if jimmy olsen looked more like this instead of the mandingo clone they got, it wouldn't have been an issue?

Not form where I am
Its not just white and black that exist

It would still look porny now ugly porny

Yea, the people that ultra close to the poles are well known for the fair white skin

I don't know what you mean by porny

>Its not just white and black that exist
no one said otherwise, in fact the post you responded to before that one pointed out how anons singled out one for shitposting versus the other.

Are you stupid?

Do you know how dark Eskimos are?

This is Sup Forumsmblr tho sjw lesbians here thrive.
And the cucks who fall for it unwilingy support liberal degenerate feminism

Still haven't seen one tho
Degenerate

I miss reading Red Wolf.

It was comfy.

but anons here shat all over that image. Which is it?

The only time I actually see one is here in the net from cherry pick pictures and some TV shows
If I go outside right now I will only see fat people

Dani Moonstar had the power to project illusions, usually fear based illusions, and then she had magic Valkyrie powers and a pegasus.

She just happened to be really good with a bow and arrow because she was big on MUH APACHE PRIDE.

The best pop culture natives have all been "muh bows and spirits" though.

Dani, The dude from the first Prey, Nightwolf, Turok, its a cool as fuck stereotype. It's like Ninjas. The Japanese aren't pissed when "look another Japanese ninja" happens in pop culture. They embrace the hell out of the stickt.

What made Dani great as a character was that her being "Muh Apache" was only one element of her character. She was also headstrong and could get herself in trouble, co-leaders with Sam, besties with Rahne, etc. She walks into the room she has more character bits with the New Mutants than just "How palefaces. Me Apache squaw."

That's a hell of a lot of buzzwords there champ.

Forge is native American.

feel like bow and arrow Dani is a fairly recent thing.

No I remember her using it back in Claremont era New Mutants. Mostly she used her fear powers but she definitely used a bow.

The only approved portrayal of ethnic minorities is they must act like generic white people. Any minority acting like real life minorities is offensive. It is more acceptable to act white than anything else.

Actually, Sonya's "powers" are tech. I agree with you that Cage's new origin is kind of dumb...but ordinary ki training wouldn't have explained why he has the same moves as all the guys who use souls. The ki training guys are all fire and wind moves.

this

Having a native with a bow and arrow is racist stereotyping

Showing a native who's poor and surrounded by people with alcohol and drug problems is also stereotyping

He needs a wife, 2.5 kids, and a house with a white picket fence or face the wrath of social justice

If you are not a Native American, people will call you racist and appropriating a culture.

Art is no longer judged on its own merit, who makes it matters.

oh for fuck's sake. someone isn't gonna like your art no matter what. stop generalizing and crying like a little bitch about it.

nah dude
have him/her growing up in new york while flashing back to the reservation every now and then
in fact, that's basically every hero's story with native american threw in there
why break the mold?

The problem is whenever Natives come up they are usually dressed like it's the 1800's and there is a ceremony going on and they are apparently from mosh-mash tribe. The only hint someone would have that I am Mayan is a little idol necklace I wear, and I only wear it because it was a gift from an aunt.

>The Japanese aren't pissed when "look another Japanese ninja" happens in pop culture. They embrace the hell out of the stickt.
You're missing something tho, It's not the natives that get mas at this, they have middle class whites to get offended by them. Also the occasional "I'm part Cherokee"

Jason Strongbow is a cape character who deserves more love.
