Trump's protectionist policies are the one thing I don't agree with. While I believe in social nationalism, I also believe in economic globalism. Why waste infrastructure and labour on producing shit someone can do for cheaper? It's pure socialism. It's practically the same as artificially inflating minimum wages. It just makes shit more expensive for everyone. Instead, Trump should be promoting the creation of higher value-added jobs, such as technology development that less developed countries don't have the skills and infrastructure to produce.

It's really hard to compete with slave labor that pays people 10 cents an hour in China where they have to build nets to stop people from committing suicide in their shitty jobs as opposed to paying people a decent wage in your home country. People earning a decent wage in your country help out by paying taxes, not being a leech and spending money on the economy as opposed to millions being laid off and on welfare.
The main benefit of the consumer is when a company moves it jobs like Ford from the US to Mexico it's to cut cost and make their automobiles more affordable since they cut cost, in reality consumers in the US lost valuable tax payers, pay more for welfare for these newly unemployed people and car prices for Ford remain the same while Ford just makes a higher profit on their shitty cars while also taking huge amounts of money from the American tax payer via bailouts.

He got rich and money changes people sometimes. Suddenly he got invited to parties with Champagne Socialists, people told him he was important. His ego grew, he was meant to lead, to be a messiah to the masses. But it just didn't work out did it? But after 20+ years of extreme wealth, and having his ego stroked by Liberals, he became cynical and bitter, he became contemptuous of the people he sought to help, and became more like the people he sought to bring down. You can hear that side of him in the line about "They can't even afford a percocet" even as he's ripping on Obamacare, he's also taking a swipe at the masses for being a bunch of opioid addicts.

Bernie never had a chance because it was rigged from the beginning and wasn't able to gain enough support in the end. No one took Trump seriously and expected him to bomb but realized this was far from true too late. We also know from the Emails that the Clinton campaign tried to elevate Trump during the primaries because they figured he'd be the easiest candidate to beat.

Free trade is good when it gives your manufactures a competitive advantage, i.e. the reason why Britain was a free trading country in the 19th century, because it was the first to industrialize.
Protection is good when you don't have such an advantage. It's not complicated.
The ultimate point is keeping a favorable balance of trade and preserving jobs that generate wealth rather than playing musical chairs with the wealth you already have.

it's about finding equillibrium. low priced goods are fine, but they aren't the be-all and end all of civilization. Greater economic participation among working age adults and self-sufficiency for strategic industries are both more important than being able to buy shit for cheap. On top of that, a lot of the cost savings we get from manufacturing things overseas come from the fact that factories overseas get to pay their employees less both in real and nominal terms, ignore safety requirements they'd have to obey here (like paying for the healthcare for an employee if you run his foot over with a forklift instead of firing him) Or obeying additional environmental regulations. I think the Carbon Dioxide scare is a load of bullshit, but I sure like banning factories from dumping their untreated hazardous waste into the environment. It's fine to add an import tarrif to adjust for the costs incurred by obeying US laws versus foreign laws.
Also, free trade doesn't exist as long as you have chinese state-owned enterprises competing with you, because they don't necessarily have to turn a profit as long as their business furthers chinese strategic goals.
