But Danny is a white

Holy fuck how did they not choose him
He had to be an atrocious actor

Danny Rand is a white dude.

He looks really old. Danny is supposed to be an inexperienced, young Iron Fist.

>Well, I knew about Iron Fist before anyone was talking about it in the public. I heard it going around inside the industry, and I was like, “Wow, if I get a chance to audition for the lead, this could potentially be a great vehicle for me.” I had a lot to offer here, but I knew that the character is white in the comic book, so I was concerned. But I thought at least I had a shot — I’m half white and I do martial arts and I could easily play that role. So I was excited. And then I read for Danny and they liked me a lot. I read again and again and again, and it was a long process, and it got to the point where they were talking about my availability and my dates. That’s always a good sign, you know? And then they went with Finn and they had me read for a villain part maybe two weeks later. I was in Spain, and I read for the part and I got it.
> I mean, you put your blood and sweat and tears into these things and then you just end up not getting a phone call. I got a lot of positive feedback and a lot of positive encouragement from Marvel and from the casting people. So I know they were saying good things about me, but then they chose not to [cast me]. But then the fact that they asked me to read again for a different character is a testament to they liked my work enough.

This is him

>Iron Fist knows kung fu, so he should be Asian!!!
I can't believe people actually believed this and thought it would be progressive

I'd take looks old over looks like he did ten push-ups to prepare for the role

I bet you are fine with Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman though.

I think OP means he's actually a macular man who's trained in martial arts

Too old, too "hard looking", for lack of a better term, and he's not white.

He could probably play Shang-Chi though.

No, I was annoyed at it. Especially since the other Amazonians actresses could do it. Why not Gadot?

Yeah, I get that, but I'm talking about all the tumblrettes and SJWs who wanted Iron Fist to be Asian.

>implying Sup Forums didn't lose it over WW not being a delicious muscle girl

You know what, I think this is one situation where they would have been better off race changing. Or at least picking a guy who looks like they were actually in a fight once in their life. God damn the guy they picked looks like a weenie.

I think it's about on par with all the people who get triggered when they cast someone not-white in a traditionally white role.

Two sides of the same autistic coin.

>we'll let you play Zhou and get rolled in about five minutes by a twig

Connie Nielsen and Robin Wright were the only other actresses playing Amazons, the rest were all athletes. Gal actually did put on about 20 pounds for WW if her modeling stats are to be believed, it's just that when you're starting off as a Halloween skeleton decoration 20 pounds doesn't count for much.

It doesn't matter how good at martial arts he is because Scott Buck decided the series wasn't about martial arts.

The show still would've been shit. Tan deserves better.

>she put on 20 pounds for the role
She must've been really spooky before

There's no way they'll fuck it up twice.

If something can happen once it can always happen again.

THERE'S NO WAY THEY CAN FUCK IT UP TWICE.
please...

So you're telling me the one time they didn't swap out a white actor it ends up working against us?

>It doesn't matter how good at martial arts he is because Scott Buck
I like how you could've just stopped right there and you'd still be right.

because he's more suited to Shang-Chi

You know how there's the SJW argument that you can change any character from because white people have no defining traits? They're the "default" in American culture? That in changing them away from white you start adding traits where if you "white wash" something you're taking them away.

Take that person and put them in a different culture and now they're not longer the default. That's why him being white is important here.

Making him Asian, even Asian American, doesn't have the same impact. They could make him black but Jesus stop making characters black for once.

He can play shang chi

Fin Jones just needs to work out and train more

like Defenders just proved, subverting white privilege is integral to the Iron Fist/Power Man dynamic

Iron Fist has to be a rich white man

That pic of Iron Fist never fails to make me laugh. Just look at the little shit

Are there no white martial artists anymore?
Man in the eighties we coulda had Van Damme as Iron Fist. That would have been cool.

Christian Howard

>That would have been cool
No.

Americans, regardless of race, would still be the outsiders in an ancient society of warrior monks.

Hell, looking similar to them but having nothing in common culturally would probably make you even more despised by the locals the same way that nerdy black guys complain about not being seen as "black enough" or hispanic guys who can't speak spanish are made fun of.

Part of the point of Danny is that he was an outsider to Kun Lun

But then, here it turns out Kun Lun has people from all over, to the point that the diversiteam that was the leadership of the Hand was originally from Kun Lun.

If that is the case then this guys

>

argument makes even less sense.

The diversiteam was a retcon so not really.

Man he took that pretty well really.

It makes sense so long as we're being faithful to the original story and themes.

The problem is that the leaders of the Hand, all exiles from Kun Lun, are an European, a Japanese, a Chinese, an African and a South American, and that implies that Kun Lun probably has always welcomed foreigners, or at least been accustomed to them. And since they were all prestigious members of Kun Lun' society before being exiled, it also sets the precedent that a foreigner like Danny could get the privilege (lol) of becoming the Iron Fist.

Of course, when they cast Finn as Danny, they probably didn't know that they were gonna fuck up the lore of Kun Lun like this. They may still plan to reveal in IF2 that Danny was treated like shit for being a whitey outsider, but it's gonna ring much less true.

I mean in the context of Danny being an outsider. Retcon for Iron Fist or not, if they'd never shown Kun Lun until that point in the show then however they choose to depict it in the show is just how it is within that series universe.

He may be a good martial arts actor, but he fucking sucked in that Drunken Kung Fu fight in the show.

Why should they adhere super close to the comics though?

The comics already exist and if people want that exact story they can read them. If they want to do something new with the show then its their own business and it'll succeed or fail on its own merits. That's how it should be.

They can always say Kun Lun used to be open to foreigners, but ever since the Hand 5 betrayed them, they resent outsiders.

Why the fuck adapt anything then?

It doesn't have to be 1:1, but the main themes should be there. Otherwise you get shit that's only superficially related to the source material.

Like GitS, the Death Note movie or yeah, Iron Fist.

And if people like the new ones better then that's just how it is and if they do poorly it was a failed experiment but it's not bad to try something new.

BECAUSE FUCKING IRON FIST IS A FUCKING WHITE RICH GUY HOW THE FUCK CANT U UNDERSTAND THIS?

There's a lot to be said about changes arguably improving adaptations, like the GitS manga to the original GitS anime adding a lot of thematic depth to what was otherwise a cyberpunk almost porn comic; or the Clockwork Orange leaving out a whole chapter that changes the whole message of the story, and being more successful for it.

But ultimately I think adaptations of a work shouldn't change the core concept and themes, otherwise what's the point? Why not make a new thing? (I know, brand recognition)

If you're gonna change things, you better be damn sure, because it's a huge gamble.

I don't know failing a pointless experiment when you already had an outline for a good product definitely seems like a bad thing.

>(I know, brand recognition)
Pretty much that, yeah.

Entertainment is a business.

It is, but you'd expect it'd be more profitable to produce adaptations that are satisfying to new audiences AND to the existing fans.

I mean, it's what the whole MCU's success is based on.

GitS made money, but I imagine it would have made more money if it didn't piss off all the fans of the anime.

That's how you continue to find work in Hollywood. You can't take that shit personally.

...

>but you'd expect it'd be more profitable to produce adaptations that are satisfying to new audiences AND to the existing fans.

It pretty much always is, but execs have never noticed the correlation because to be aware that more faithful adaptations do better numbers, you'd have to be aware of what is and is not faithful which requires familiarity with the material and producers don't read books or comics or play video games or whatever it is that's being adapted.

he keeps retreating articles about how Iron Fist was whitewashing recently, he's not taken it well at all, he's been very public recently at firing shots at Finn Jones, he's definitely on Disney's shitlist now

Tan was never, ever gonna be Danny Rand. Marvel even had a pitch from an Asian showrunner (forgotten the name) with an AAIron Fist. They said no.

Also:

>tfw asian and would've loved to see an asian Iron Fist despite my only exposure of the character is in the fucking Ultimate Spiderman cartoon.

Would've been cool desu but I'd prefer accurate representation over diversity.

Also I remember him being shit in the show.

I wish they would have at least cast him as Davos instead of that dude with a baby bump.

No, he really hasn't. If anything he fanned the flames about the whole AA Iron Fist controversy.

This.

This is the weirdest thing to me. He would have been a much better Davos/Steel Serpent. I have a feeling they went with the other guy because Lewis Tan was in much better shape and would have made Finn look worse than he already did with his " I do yoga 2 times a week" physique. Realistically if they go full retcon with IF S2 they can kill off Davos and have Steel Serpent be the drunken master guy (who was Lewis Tan).

This, motherfucker looks exactly like Shang-Chi.

I'd take an Asian Danny if he could do figh scenes well and could play him to a T.

Finn jones is definitely no Danny Rand to me.
