I remember the guests of the vh1 80's special talking about this. Mainstream media had begun associating certain characteristics with being gay - like being fit, clean and fashionable. Women wanted that but, you know, in a guy that would actually fuck them, and those things began to gain popularity. At the end of the day, they were seen as quirky because as far as people knew, they weren't actually gay.
Put that and the fact that most popular bands and shit had all male members that spent almost every waking hour together, and you got your gay vibe.
