Clinton sent mail from her server to Huma.
Huma had that mail forwarded to her yahoo account.
Huma backed up that mail on the mobile devices.
There you go, mail originating from the server ended up on the laptops.
Some news sources suggest it was Huma sending emails to herself (for example from her state.gov to her yahoo) perhaps for backup purposes. These emails included home brew server responses in the forwarded strings.
It means that they were outside of the server which in turn means that the information was compromised even before the hack.
The emails contained classified information. Whoever sent/received them did not have authorization to view that info.
So it doesn't matter if Clinton didn't send/receive. If its info that only HRC should have had, she's still fucked.

The Huma devices show supposedly complete emails.Yet they find classified comms between Huma and Weiner concerning state dept business that were deleted from Huma's devices.
Another scenario is that they found comms where Huma is discussing "intent" to delete or mishandle classified information with Weiner. That would actually make more sense based on what Comey has said but the former is more likely based on the information that other people are reporting.
