The whole point of the citadel is Rick's cloistering together to avoid the bullshit of their lives... Only to generate entirely new bullshit for themselves under the pretense that it's better than their old bullshit somehow.

It's a bunch of assholes lying to each other and accepting the lie because they've convinced themselves it's the better choice.

Or out of fear that standing out getting them chopped the hell down just like this guy got strapped to the brain milker.

Intelligence alone does not make you successful

you can be super-smart but capitalism will still grind you into the dirt

presumably they're paid in something that's meaningful to a rick

They were probably at dinner with their family and Jerry got up and whined "Well, RICK, you act like you're mad that everybody's stupid, but it's actually one of the few comforts you have in your lonely bitter life! That's why you stick around here with all of us dumb-dumbs instead of going somewhere you'd be perfectly average."
Then Rick packed up and moved to the Citadel out of sheer spite- because he's an asshole.

not every Rick is smart and snarky
there was a Rick that ate his own poop in season 1 and he was very nice to Jerry

Because in an infinite multiverse there would be many Ricks of average intelligence.

It specifically says in that episode that all ricks have the same IQ.

Some of them probably think it's perfectly normal. When in Rome after all.

But if that were the case, shouldn't there be other Ricks out there who see the Citadel as a burden and avoid it like C-137?

Despite people saying rick and morty had a libertarian bent I think this episode was extremely anti-libertarian/capitalist. The citadel is basically Galt's Gulch, a bunch of people who all think they're the smartest and best in the universe, all thinking they're better than everyone else, coming together to build some utopia based around this idea of allowing their superior genius to create a society where the best rise to the top.. But surprise, the majority are going to be stuck in terrible dead end jobs while tiny a minority game the system to enrich them selves and entrench their power.

Why was't rick's cookie stamping job automated? Because that's how little the average rick is respected. He's no longer a self-reliant super-scientist, is labour is so under-valued it's cheaper for them to do things manually with rick-labour than spend the resources on a cookie stamping machine. The Citadel is a trap that brings in arrogant ricks who think they'll totally rise to the top because fuck you I'm a rick. By the time they realize they'll be nothing more than a cog in a corrupt capitalist machine they've lost their portal gun, they can't afford any portal juice, and the system has them. All that's left is spending your meager credits on drugs and entertainment, maybe cowboy morty can dance the pain away.

>shouldn't there be other Ricks out there who see the Citadel as a burden and avoid it like C-137?
There are

They're not involved with the citadel, for obvious reasons

>some people are struggling so capitalism must be bad

Fuck off Marx

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pareto_principle

Because not all Ricks are the same.

And yet you have "tall Morty"

All made up.

according to rick they are trapped there following other ricks bad ideas

>And yet you have "tall Morty"
He's obviously the exception, not the rule.

*most people are struggling.

tall morty could have ricks iq but some other problem like he got half his brain shattered in some accident or something

That's just the pareto distribution in effect

Didn't C-137 Rick say something about how the only way a Rick would end up on the Citadel is because he lost/broke his portal gun, or because he wants to prey on the weak.

>because he lost/broke his portal gun
That would make a lot of sense. Especially considering the guy asked for one during the hostage situation

Mortys

yeah, or one of the other things he runs around the multiverse getting

or something that is only convenient to produce for a multitude of ricks

Infinite realities = Infinite possibilities = Infinite certainties

duh

The better question is why would the Citadel run by Ricks allow Mortys to run for office in the first place?

Cause look at the little guy, watch him go! That a boy, champ.

As a joke.

We've seen at least three 'dumb' ricks.
Doofus Rick
Tall Morty
Simple Rick (who may not have been dumb but he was obviously thought of as inferior by other ricks since he worked in wood)

it's obviously not an exception.

Do they though? According to whom? And what is IQ against creativity?

i dont remember that at all
rick technically couldnt use the portal gun in the first episode and ended up using the federations airoport like teleportation station

Exactly this right here
Rick said it best himself to the citadel in the former episodes
"You guys were afraid of the government, so to protect yourselves you made a stupid government."
Something like that along those lines
Point being, Ricks joined the citadel in hopes of it being a safe haven utopia but even though they all "have the same IQs" there will always be greed, why do you think they elected Evil Morty? The Ricks were tired of being treated lower by other Ricks.
For instance "Cool Rick" becoming the new boss? What the fuck makes him so cool and so much more important than everyone else? Because he wears shades? Anyone would go mad just to realize that having shades is what gets you at the top

Nice strawman

anyone still in the citadel is either stupid of one of the millions held hostage by their terrible ideas
actual quote

Why is the Citadel still needed? I thought it's purpose was to hide Ricks and have Mortys for said Ricks. But now that the Galactic Federation was destroyed, they don't really have to hide, right?

A betterer question is that all the Ricks love Beth, but the way Citadel society seems to work is that 15 years ago Rick abandoned Beth and his wife when Beth was a teenager and fucked off to space. Then he came back and basically kidnapped Morty in millions of dimensions.

They still have enemies. But more importantly it's become a Rick hub where Ricks can go to pick up supplies or new Morties. While the major danger has passed, the convenience of having a community is still there.

Presumably there are infinite "Galactic Federations" and only one was destroyed. Hence why Rick calls himself the Rickest Rick, since instead of hiding he just destroyed his enemies.

If there are infinite realities wouldn't there be one where Rick and Morty were born earlier or later? Why are they all the same age?

The episode showed that portal fluid is a commodity that lower class Rick's simply can't afford. They have no physical way to leave, they are literally trapped by the system.

I know somewhere in the episode is said they all have the same IQ (with obvious exceptions). So what's to stop all of them going home to their rickpartments and brewing up their own? A control of the portal fluid method, brain implants, a backstory so complex the writers won't share? Or maybe it's just "only the exception hyper intelligent Rick can make it."

The ingredients used to make it are probably hoarded by the higher caste

Being a genius doesn't intrinsically teach you physics. You still have to study. The protagonist Rick is successfully because being alone forced him to learn. He's a Randian hero. Live by your values and succeed through nothing but your own ability.

Citadel is pretty much a refugee shelter for Ricks to flee their enemies.

Stop question the plot fluid and ignore how whenever they need to Rick makes amazing stuff out of nothing.

They had an idea and had to fuck with shit to get it to work. Don't expect this to stop.

And why the crack head rick was making portal guns illegally.

He had limited materials on Purge Planet too

Not all Ricks are the same as C-137. Consider the fake memory C-137 shows the federation. On how members of the Citadel would reach out to other Ricks and give them access to portal gun technology.

It seems that the Ricks who took the offer never had to learn how to make it and just learned how to use it. The seems to be the case for working Joe Rick. Had he known to make his own portal gun tech, he wouldn't be working.

In fact, that's probably the reason he's in menial labor. To work for that Portal Gun and/or fluid.

portal gun is very important to ricks. Which is why they freak out when one is broken or becomes damaged.

So for rick to care so much about the portal gun, there probably has to be a lot of red tape to get one officially. And since where dealing with a society filled with assholes and incompetent 15 year olds I'd imagine its pretty difficult to get one.

capitalism

Because it's funny. That's the only reason. Just fucking accept it and move on.

>oog c-137 make fire from sticks
>why working Joe oog not make fire

checkmate, writers

Nah. If that were the case, there wouldn't be convenient portal gun chargers nor would there be portal gun ads.

The Ricks there are trapped by terrible ideas. Much like communism.

>Steal/make illegal portal gun
>Become an outlaw with hundreds of copies of you hunting you down

Seems like a bad deal

oh fuck off

WOO WOO IDEOLOGY FIGHT

>It's a bunch of assholes lying to each other and accepting the lie because they've convinced themselves it's the better choice.
>Or out of fear that standing out getting them chopped the hell down
So just like all societies.

not if you're super smart. People grinding under capitalism as you put it might think they are super smart, but they are afflicted with an ego much larger than their intelligence which is why they are failing.

New citadel, user. I'm pretty sure in the new citadel it got a lot harder to get around with portal guns becoming scarce.

I think they go to Ricks from other dimensions, promise them some cool shit, get them into the citadel, take their portal guns and then leave them by themself.

So whats the most likely cause for why stupid ricks to exist. They live in a universe where everyone is significantly stupid, and theyre the best and brightest that universe has to offer. Or do they exist in a universe where they're the dumbest person on the universe.

And yet you see a scene where they are literally dumping portal guns.

If anything, it's probably the fluid that is more scarce. Because it seems that not all Ricks know how to make it.

>And yet you see a scene where they are literally dumping portal guns.

Yeah, I'm sure that portal guns and the fluid needed for them were made scarce on purpose. After the debacle with the last citadel it seems pretty clear that they want to have a much bigger vice grip on Ricks and their mobility.

I mean all Ricks know how to make the fluid and the gun, but without ready portal guns available to easily get resources they are stuck scrounging what they can find on the citadel.

prove me wrong
The episode is a very succinct commentary on the fact that capitalism isn't a meritocracy, due to the fact all the Ricks have equal intelligence, yet the ones in power are only there due to only aesthetics, like cool rick. Despite all their academic knowledge, there are still those that end up on the lowest rungs of society.
Even this Ricks outrage becomes commodified and turned into wafer. The commercial for the product is like what Guy Debord said about the spectacle subsuming anything subversive into itself. If this isn't capitalism the episode, i don't know what is.

B-but this episode can't be about capitalism because I know socialism is evil and so they must have fudged their logic to make capitalism look bad.

Lizard Morty best Morty

That's why it makes no sense. If the Ricks are true Ricks, they would be able to automate every job at the citadel. It's a shitty argument against capitalism if they're doing menial labor just because the plot calls for it.

someone's still gotta clean the toilets in an objectivist society

>"X is bad because it makes people suffer; Y is superior"
>"a lot of people suffer in Y"
>"fuck you bitch suffering is unavoidable"

>all the Ricks have equal intelligence
we blatantly see a retarded Rick this episode. Howabout next time you bait you actually watch the show first?

Same reason why people with college degrees will do jobs that don't even require high school education to qualify.

Because we seem to forget that not all Ricks are Rick C-137. The Rick from the parasite episode was just as cool, but most Ricks are somewhere between C-137 and Detoxified Rick, as a spectrum. Most Ricks probably would never have Cronenberg'd an entire planet. Loud, yes, mean, yes, The smartest man in the universe, yes. But not quite as monstrous as Rick C-137.

You're technically right in that the episode does invoke themes of commercialism and alienation in order to drive home the bleak noir tone. But it does that just for its own sake, because they wanted a noir, multiple perspective story with an omnious ending. As points out they have to use contrivance to do it, but that doesn't matter. Because R&M isn't trying to prove anything, it's a cartoon. One that doesn't make a secret out of its tendency to invoke recognizable tropes.

>yeah this episode shows why I am not succesfull/rich
>Its capitalisms fault which holds me back besides beeing super smart unlike those dumb succesfull people
>not my inflated ego telling me im smarter then I actually think I am
>I bet under Socialism i would be super succesfull and have 5 girlfriends

Doofus Rick just wasn't a dick which is why other Ricks looked down on him. He could still make those instant brownies out of random chemicals.

Any exceptions means there is either is no rule if we're talking natural law, or that the man made rule is bullshit.
To state otherwise would be like saying water only starts to boil at 105C except for when it doesnt, because we have exceptions where it boils 100C.
Clearly the "rule" that it only starts to boil at 100C is a load of bullshit.

>That's why it makes no sense. If the Ricks are true Ricks, they would be able to automate every job at the citadel.
He could, but I also don't think Rick is as smart as he makes himself out as. Even the OG Rick has blind spots, as illustrated by the therapist in the pickle rick episode. Not only that, but Evil Morty has managed to take over a citadel full of Ricks by merely playing the part of a competent politician. Rick can't see outside these cultural conventions, which is why the original council of Ricks failed in the first place. It couldn't account for a Rick that was outside its rigid hierarchy. There's a part of Rick that believes in these institutions, despite it making him worse off in the end. A world made up of Ricks actually reveals hidden subtext about his own psyche. It's actually kind of genius, when you think about it.

And that scarcity may be the reason why Ricks are doing menial labor. Its to buy Portal Gun tech. While every Rick is capable of making their own gadgets, the portal gun is probably the one breakthrough not all Ricks can make. As seen with crackhead Rick.

And the retarded Rick is now referred to as a morty, remember?
He's not really a Rick in the eyes of other Ricks.

As any user here knows.

The brownies were made of shit though

I know they're driving the "nothing fucking matters" point home and tucking it in bed where it'll wake up the next morning and greet everyone with a grin on it's stupid face but I don't like how hard they're focusing on the billions of Ricks and Morties.

the old wouldn't
and the new saw it as a joke

Better question is where are all the female Ricks and Mortys.

Whos' your favourite rick?

You know he eats his own shit, right?

Was this the most thought provoking episode in any season?

Willy Wonka Rick

The only good Rick is a dead Rick.

lizard morty a cute

Lowes- I mean Tallest Morty

So rickism is basically the worst parts of capitalism and communism created by a sociopathic genius multiplied into the millions who has no qualms about enslaving alternate versions of himself and his grandson

>Society run by Ricks
>Democratic Elections

You think they would know that Democracy only works when voters are informed, which still isn't the case in the Citadel when any Morty or Doofus Rick's opinion has the same weight as the smartest Rick.

>create world where everyone is just like you
>has to make cookies
CONSEQUENCES

>Rick does what he does because he's the smartest man in the universe compared to everyone else, so he's on top

>Throw rick into a society where everyone is just like him
>No longer on top

Why is this so hard to understand. Being that smart or that egotistical means nothing if everyone else is just like you.

They join the citadel because they don't want the federation and other governments coming after them, protection in numbers amongst themselves. But someone has to lead and someone has to follow, so circumstances lead to some ricks being fatcats and other ricks working an assembly line

You can have a high IQ and still not get anywhere depending on your opportunities, life choices, education, experience etc. But having a high IQ increases your chances of pulling ahead of the crowd. In a world where society is divided into millions of geniuses and millions of teenage boys the geniuses still end up forming a hierarchy based on their different lives lived and their IQ stops being an inherent advantage in a society where they all have the same or similar high IQ.

Strange thing is, I think we already had an episode about capitalism; the "slavery with extra steps" one is what comes to mind.

>Dreaming about you and your kid in a perfect world
>get sucked in a blender world
CONSEQUENCES

Presumably the votes of the Morty's are worth less, or perhaps they can't even vote being that all of them are only 15 years old. Also we saw that lowest/slowest Rick was in a class for Mortys so probably those Ricks who are stupid are legally considered Mortys.

What if C-137's original Rick is Simple Rick.

So what would be better then capitalism?
