Anus ready

I exaggerate, but let me give some context.

Oh c'mon, how bad can it be?

In 1996 Marvel wasn't doing too hot because of the industry falling to pieces around them though the "industry crash" is also an exaggeration, it was more a "Marvel crash" with most of the comic shops that popped up solely because of Marvel's growth spurt being the ones going out of business, but it was especially their non-X-Men/Spider-Man books that were floundering.

HIS CHEST IS HUGE

On the other hand, former Marvel artists over at Image were doing pretty well for themselves. Particularly Jim Lee's WildStorm and Rob Liefeld's Awesome Comics.

This should answer your question and set the tone here.

>page 2
>already lost it to Cap's face
Oh boy, this is going to be some ride, isn't it?

uhmm excuse me, what type of rifles are those?

>first page
>caps head is on backwards

the "i cant draw guns so i'll hide it behind muzzle flashes, random lines, and hands" model.

Oh my god they brought chuck dixon into this too?

Briefly. I think there was a disagreement and he didn't contribute much as a result. After that Loeb was doing the writing.

Those aren't wwii tanks either

>first page
>everyone has the same face

>first three decades
>everyone has the same face

Liefeld.png

Oh yeah, this comic.
I'm doing a MS Paint remake of the first issue but I'm both too busy and too lazy to actually advance much on that little side project

(These pages right here: hero wakes up in bed in the middle of the night, walks around naked while nude freshly-banged bimbo snoozes; pretty much sum up 90's EXTREME comics to me even moreso than guns, terrorists and dropping out of helicopters)

So, naturally, Marvel, who a decade earlier DC was going to license six of their properties to to revamp, fired their long-time artists to farm out their key Avengers books to Image studios.

>I think there was a disagreement
He was probably ill after all that head-scratching he made after looking at the first issue.

(Also, Steve's velociraptor feet)

The result was Marvel rebooting their Avengers titles with Heroes Reborn, which brought us such masterpieces as Eric Masterson, Teen Tony, and of course this.

Mark Gruenwald, who had been writing Cap for over a decade and 100+ issues, and who had recently turned down an offer to be an editor for DC because of his loyalty to Marvel and who was rewarded for this loyalty by being booted from his favorite character and being forced to fire many of his close friends, took this first issue home with him, and never showed up to work again. He was 43 years old.

>go to Liefelds wikipedia page
>see pic related
>he drew it at age 19 in 1987

What the fuck happened.

Oh fuck woops.

Sorry, forgot its bad form to post pictures during a storytime.

>bimbo
Isn't she supposed to be his wife?

>Mark Gruenwald
I love his wikipedia picture
upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Mark_Gruenwald_(early_1990s).png

These fucking faces. These motherfucking faces.

"Plot assist by Chuck Dixon" is kind of like saying "Entertainment provided by John Wayne Gacy Jr."

I hope you finish it, user, because that sounds like a riot.

Yes, but all Liefeld women are bimbos. Or, to be a bit nicer, "babes".

>Maybe I should wake Peggy
If she didn't after you jumped out of the bed screaming your lungs out and after turning the nightstand lamp on I don't think she'll ever wake up at all.

He just looks like the most fun guy on the planet, don't he?

>What the fuck happened.
In what way? That looks terrible as well.

This is WAY worse than I remember it looking.

Actually, I think this may be Liefeld's worst artwork. There's plenty of stuff he did before and after this that looked better.

>that last panel
i just woke up my dogs from laughing so hard

Holy fuck rob.

Did you need to get this page done before lunch or something?

This is probably Liefeld's most absurd art of his entire career, which is saying something for someone who's famous for his absurd proportions.

And I don't even think Liefeld is THAT bad when he really tries. His art looks wacky but at it's best it can be written off as "stylish". I prefer it to 3D poser and traced garbage any day of the week, but of course that's like preferring cleaning up tortoise poop to cleaning up dog poop

It looks bad but it looks better than THIS.

It also has potential, he was fresh out of highschool and only had some mild proportion and anatomy problems you could iron out with focused study and practice.

It looks better than 90% of what he was doing a decade later.

WHY ARE HIS ARMS STRETCHED OUT LIKE THAT? IT MAKES NO LOGICAL SENSE

Timely, isn't it? Also I'll give it to Rob and Loeb, Steve's line about "only some news people" is pretty in-character.

>hand is 10 inches up from the ankle

HOW FUCKING LONG ARE HIS ARMS, ROB.

>black Colossus
Liefeld was way ahead of his time

I'd just like to say y'all's reactions so far have been absolute 100% solid gold. Keep 'em coming.

>In accordance with his request, he was cremated, and his ashes were mixed with the ink used to print the first printing of the trade paperback compilation of Squadron Supreme

woah

Chapel?

What do you think of detailed photo-referencing like Ranson?

But they only play the music, not with lyrics.

Great story, isn't it? Though I'd find it pretty creepy to own.

Marvel did not fucking deserve Mark in those days. The guy was living the fan's dream up until that point.

>that sexy fat man prancing in the cafeteria

What the fuck are these people doing? Skipping? Frolicking?
People don't walk like that

how the heck this man sold millions comics with that kind of drawing?

>What the fuck are these people doing? Skipping? Frolicking?
Mincing
>People don't walk like that
Damn right. Mincing homosexuals aint no kind of people.

For all the flak Rob and Jeph will get in this thread, I'll take these short, snappy interactions over anything Bendis has written recently.

Love it, actually. Shows what you can do combining photorealism with real talent.

They were only recently given feet for the first time by Liefeld so they're not totally sure how to walk yet

Hey that wasn't suspicious at all

I hate Loeb's stories but the guy does know how to write. I can always enjoy even his edgiest shit because he understands how to communicate information to the audience and how not to bore you to tears.

I'm still miffed that his Challengers mini never got that ongoing

Sup Forums will like this girl. Surprisingly she actually looks like a human and not a pinup.

This room is like a hundred feet across and has nothing in it except a couch and TV about three feet away from each other

How the fuck did Cap punched that nazi on the left?

Wow, why does Marvel have to shove politics into their comics all of the sudden

>What the fuck happened.

Somebody told him to "develop his own style."

...

Rikki was the best part of this run

What happened to her?

She wears an awful lot of make up for a teenager but whatever

>this may be Liefeld's worst artwork

Yeah I have no idea what the fuck happened after X-Force/Youngblood.

It's like he lost all the creative fun and kept every flaws

She died.

Sup Forums crybabies the comics

>Actually, I think this may be Liefeld's worst artwork. There's plenty of stuff he did before and after this that looked better.

The only reason it looked better is because they had inkers that were completely redrawing it.

Even the swastika has bizarre proportions and nonsensical perspective

So does this, check the credits. Maybe they got him a really shitty inker for this run.

Is that Cable

Get that rash on your forehead checked out.

Didn't this Universe end up a wasteland and Doom ended up taking over? I think she was part of a team opposed to him?

Was about to say.

As another user we all love says, the 90's had a great share of Silver Foxes.

No he inked himself for some of his peak 90's stuff. Hawk and Dove had an inker X-Force didn't

>boss, we've got a problem with the issue
>oh shit, it's already been sent. what's the problem?
>well, we've got white americans shooting a jap on page 1
>fuck! just... just put a swastika on the armband!
>b-but, it's a rising sun armband. people will...
>JUST PUT A SWASTIKA ON THE FUCKING ARMBAND GODDAMMIT

>tfw people defend rob liefield now.
Why.

Killed off in a pointless Marvel teen hero crossover involving Onslaught.

According to Wiki, Rikki was in an Age of Ultron What If story?

Master Man? Really?

Narrowly avoids that dead space at the bottom

So this is the World Party, which *might* have ties to white supremacy?

Another reaction image.

Part because a lot of us who are now "oldfags" got into comics in the 90's or at least were kids back then so we grew up with this style. Even I have more of a tolerance for this stuff because this was what I saw on the shelves growing up, though I didn't buy Captain America until the '98 #1 with Waid.

Part because contrarians gonna contrarian.

To be fair, Morrison came up with that one first.
internationalhero.co.uk/m/mastman.htm

>What... ? YOU-- ! cliffhanger
Another 90's EXTREME staple

Yeah well those guys didn't speak at rallies wearing a fancy robotic suit to recruit teenagers did they?

>So this is the World Party, which *might* have ties to white supremacy?
They could be Buddhist extremists. They seem pretty down with ethnic cleansing at the moment.

Because this is still better than tracing poser models, tracing porn, and stealing 3D assets from Games Workshop to populate your backgrounds with.

I swear, at least 30% of the issues of Spencer's "Morning Glories" end the same way.

I gotta read that.

...

That's like a stair tile in a 2D JRPG, lol

And it's even got a JRPG treasure chest. Was Rob playing Dragon Quest or what?

Oh my fucking god, that is a panel for the ages

You probably don't. Unless the story was resolved in the last 6 issues, then it is no where near finished, and might not actually continue. I fell off it because of very long delays.

There's no news about it continuing on the Image page

What's Stretch Armstrong doing in Captain America?

...

The only news is that they're planning on a "new season" but last heard of that was early 2016

Why the hell does Steve have Zoolander's hairdo?

I'm talking about the stuff that looked halfway decent, not the trash he did after that.

...

Jesus Christ, I had forgotten how much I hated Liefeld's art.

Captain America: T-1000
