>GeneralsJoes will no longer be covering or providing coverage of IDW Publishing’s G.I. Joe comics until something can be done about writer Aubrey Sitterson.
>It started in the G.I. Joe: Discussion Facebook group where some members were talking about a particular G.I. Joe cover, which caused Mr. Sitterson to get exceptionally hostile towards the fans to the point where he posted an image of himself giving the middle finger with a blatant image of the president blowing his own brains out on a t-shirt.
>Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m no fan of Donald Trump (an issue I will NOT be discussing further so don’t bother asking) but the gesture struck me as being completely out of line for a creator who is attempting to engage with the fan base. As if that wasn’t bad enough, when one of the admins stepped in, Mr. Sitterson fell back to his personal social media platform and proceeded to accuse the entire group of being homophobes and racists, a complete and total misrepresentation of the facts. He has used this same tactic with a recent exchange regarding folks expressing sympathy and emotion for the events of September 11th.
>Since then he has continuously posted virulent and aggressive posts through social media while at the same time promoting G.I. Joe, and over the past several weeks I have grown increasingly uncomfortable with how closely linked the G.I. Joe brand has become with his own mode of online commentary. Mr. Sitterson has spent a lot of time in the wrestling world, and he certainly seems to be working to generate heat, hoping that this heat will spill over into sales and attention for the G.I. Joe comics.
Was anybody here aware this was going on? Do any of us even read "G.I. Joe"?
>Complains about self-centeredness regarding 9/11. >"REEE ONLY NEW YORKERS CAN EXPRESS SYMPATHY ON 9/11"
Jesus Christ.
Charles Morales
Wait... G.I. Joe fans are conservatives and the comic's writer is in controversy because the fans don't like that she's a raging leftist and IDW acknowledges that?
That's a whole new world right there.
Jack Rivera
It's probably the Gung-Ho vs the Dreadnoks "gay" cover.
Evan Scott
A photo of writer in question.
Camden Richardson
>watched 9/11 from lower Manhattan AAAAAND Of COURSE he's from New York...
Jackson Allen
Oh dear, they might cancel GI Joe, potentially ruining the Hasbro Universe.
How terrible. Tragic, really. Whatever shall we do. Woe is us.
Jeremiah Foster
When did Liam start lifting?
Anthony Robinson
Think IDW will fire him?
Jace Reed
They better not, it would set an atrocius precedent.
Cooper Campbell
>G.I. Joe fans are conservatives
Is that so? Last I heard aging liberals loved the shit out of the Joes, particularly the 'America's movable Fighting Man' era of the 60s and the Adventure Team 70s.
>wwn get an Adventure Team cartoon
Chase James
They fucking better
What that self-righteous assholes aren't allowed? How terrible.
Grayson Cooper
Nah. They might pull him off the book though. Which, from what I've gathered, probably wouldn't be all that unwelcome. His book is definitely not as well-received as Hama's is.
Dude's a twat though for a lots of reasons. "Waah. Non-New Yorkers can't relate to 9/11. Waaah, MAGA losers!" We get it. You hate conservatives and you hate Trump. You and 90% of the entertainment industry.
Everyone can have their own views, but GI Joe is definitely a comic that I would assume has a pretty strong conservative following and homeboy should have probably gauged that better before going off on a weird tirade that would probably offend a good deal of people on both the right and the left though. But asking for civility and restraint in this day and age is just too much.
Hunter Moore
Ugh .. hopefully this will cancel GI Joe forever, we don't need comics about guns
Brayden Brooks
Yeah, no. My mother got off the train covered in soot, us not knowing what was going on because the cell towers were down. This guy is a sack of entitled stupid.
Elijah Thompson
Conservitive OR liberal it's just fucking unprofessional to treat your audience like that.
Everyone wants to be fucking Andy Kaufman-tier untouchable these days. What did he THINK would happen?
Ryan Diaz
I read the first few issues of the newest Joe book, and it was totally passable from a pure writing perspective (nothing great by any means, but not offensively bad), but this guy came off as an absolute knob in the letters page, so this sounds on brand.
Levi Gomez
He's not even the kinda guy who's got the talent or clout that makes it worth defending him.
Josiah Collins
RIP "Crown Jewel of the Hasbro Universe"
Jason Howard
Since its inception the comic has mocked extremism on both sides of the political spectrum.
Angel Harris
?wut?
Michael Cruz
I've worked with Hasbro for 20 years and when I was talking to some of them privately at Hascon, many of them were of the opinion that the individual licenses to IDW should be allowed to expire and either do the comics in house or find a new publisher. That was before this shit happened. I can only imagine the storm that has been going on this week.
Jose James
Honestly, I feel like there should be greater regulation by companies of what their employees spout off about on their official, public social media accounts, because on those accounts they're basically representing their employers. If you want rant about something, make an account that isn't connected to your face and your career. That goes for any kind of rant, whether it's judged to be "Right" or "Left".
Carson Jackson
This shared universe thing has been an ill conceived franchise killer.
And thry seem to have no idea what to do with Joe outside of Hama. Treating like it's broken and needs fixing doesn't help.
It's team based Metal Gear. This should not be that hard.
Jace Sanders
I don't see his angle as being particularly political. He's just a giant inflamatory 'tard.
Is his comic the one with the dissapointing gay cover? My god, how the fuck do you botch being fabulous in the 80's?
John Barnes
How the fuck do people not understand how to use social media where YOUR REAL NAME and YOUR FACE are visible for all to see?
How do these people dress themselves in the morning?
Jackson Turner
Here's the thing: they know full well what they're doing. They're using their official accounts because they have an audience that will read everything they tweet about already, and they want to either harangue or rally support from that audience.
Eli Gonzalez
>It's team based Metal Gear. This should not be that hard. This guy gets it.
Ethan Evans
>What did he THINK would happen? Going viral, getting brownie points and support.
Owen Perry
Shit, can they at least keep ROM?
Elijah Morales
For anyone who needs to maintain an image of credibility and has a job that'll fire them for acting retarded, yes twitter was a mistake
Hunter Ortiz
Well the old Hama comics criticized both conservatives and Ultra liberals so I think fans aren't crazy SJWs.
Xavier Hill
>murricans need to get over 9/11 already god!! its 2017!! >blacks still crying about slavery a century later
Ian Thomas
JESUS CHRIST
who is that girl
Blake Morales
Needs a "this is what a feminist looks like" shirt edit.
Ayden Rivera
As a horse fan, this gives me hope like you wouldn't believe. Every time I pick up an IDW book, without fail, I'm reminded of why I avoid them.
Ryder Roberts
They'll probably make Mairghread Scott the new writer since she worked in GI Joe Renegaded and she said in an interview that really wanted to write GI Joe (but didn't because of Aubrey).
I kind of liked today's issue of First Strike so I'm cool with her being the new writer.
Brody Garcia
No idea.
Matthew Ross
STFU but I totally agree with you, please let them keep ROM and not give him to Marvel because Bendis has his eyes on him.
What cover was it?
Luis Perez
In general too. The moment it evolved into a platform for "discourse", the whole thing became a shitshow. You can't have reasoned debate in that format, but fuck if people try and fail anyway.
Anthony Anderson
Aren't there two different GI Joe comics going on though? Like one in the Hama tradition, or maybe he's still writing it, and this one that takes place in a shared universe.
Larry Hama is 68 and probably still one of the coolest people in comics, saw him at a con Labor day weekend walking in the street with his aviator shades on and his jacket slung over one shoulder.
Matthew Cooper
I'm guessing it was this one, that they billed as their gay cover, for cheap heat.
It's not even GOOD gay shit.
Daniel Morris
Yeah Larry Hama was working a ton of his Vietnam issues out in those early days.
Also there's a reason Cobra Commander's American.
Michael Lewis
Just checked his twitter.
>retweeted something aporovingly saying our "greatest leader" lincoln was closer to marx than bannon >he's a bernout >calls himself America's Favorite Socialist Comic Book Writer™ >made a point to have quick kick beat snake eyes at martial arts as a stand against whitewashing >relaunched gi joe as 'scarlett's strike force' (YASS QUEEN, SLAY!)
I don't mind leftists writing GI Joe (as long as they are not completely anti-military, since, well, it's a military unit. Larry Hama is a leftist. No one cared. You know why? No one knew! It was not a political book. Cobra are unambiguously evil unlike some enemies in real wars. But maybe if you are an outright Marxist and writing on a 1980s book based on a military themed cartoon, don't go out of your way to antagonize conservative readers?
Kayden Adams
>tfw sonicfag >tfw dreading the possibility that we get a writer who's a complete SJW shithead that injects politics into a comic about cartoon animals jumping on robots
Then again they already did that in Sonic Boom
Samuel Reed
Sonic Boom is the right way to do it.
Brody Nguyen
>retweeted something aporovingly saying our "greatest leader" lincoln was closer to marx than bannon ...I legitimately can not conceive of a way in which this comparison emerges as a conversation topic.
Jeremiah Price
Renegades eneded up being really solid, I'm down with that.
Maybe try to be less like Jem (looking at you visionaries) since Jem has somehow made fucking JEM boring.
Wyatt Ward
Hama is 100% supportive of the American military and its foreign interventions. He's always been entirely unapologetic about this.
Tyler Phillips
>character stops in the middle of an action scene to deliver a speech about the writer's political views That's the exact opposite of the right way to do it.
Carson Reed
Who should get GIJoe?
Jackson Young
This reminds me that Aubrey is the same guy that went on a bizarre 15 minute rant about wanting to rape his republican uncle while discussing his boycott of WWF wrestling because Vince McMahon's wife was appointed to a nominal position in the Trump administration. Embarrassing but not surprising.
Jackson Miller
Even TMNT?
Ayden Butler
Dark Horse should get TMNT just so they can print up thick paperbacks of the old black and white Mirage stuff like they do with Usagi Yojimbo
Anthony Gray
No, I meant IDW MLP books in particular. I can't really speak to the others.
Elijah Russell
Wait, I'm confused. Isn't Hama writing GI Joe currently? And isn't it a continuation of his Marvel run?
Or is IDW doing multiple Joe titles?
David Jones
This 9/11 rant is the 9/11 of Sitterson's writing career.
Christopher Nelson
>is IDW doing multiple Joe titles? Yes
Dylan Miller
There's two Joe books, one is Hama doing whatever he wants, the other is the "main" one since it's part of IDW's new Hasbroverse.
Nolan Myers
Larry Hama is just too cool. Met him at a con in Indiana once. Shook his hand and thanked him for his service. He's really sharp and very honest about why he writes certain things. And a legitimate badass too.
And he's a liberal who isn't frothing at the mouth like the very vocal minority you see on campuses are. Or like Aubrey is. He's someone who just doesn't feel the need to bash you on the head with his views and I can appreciate that from any writer nowadays.
Ayden Flores
I don't know why hasbro continues to bother with idw. At least they have acknowledged how shitty writers are acting this time. Must have been some really bad stuff.
Kayden Walker
>Aubrey is the same guy that went on a bizarre 15 minute rant about wanting to rape his republican uncle while discussing his boycott of WWF wrestling because Vince McMahon's wife was appointed to a nominal position in the Trump administration. >rape his republican uncle while discussing his boycott of WWF wrestling
are we sure this isn't Max Landis in a muscle suit?
Asher Adams
>Must have been some really bad stuff. Aubrey's always been a bit of a twat on twitter, this time his attitude just crossed over from nerd shit to 9/11
Kayden Nelson
In his defense, being a comic writer brings in, what? Maybe 20k-25k a year on a good year?
D&C's right, some of these guys are just paying rent and getting stoned with their 5 other roommates. These people want the comics but they don't want the audience.
Aaron Martinez
I never thought I would have a problem with people complaining about 9/11 rememberance but this guy is a fucking cunt.
Luis Long
I always figured hasbro would outright buy idw myself.
Carson Ortiz
Calling yourself "America's Favorite" anything is douchechill inducing. Stan Lee might be the only comic writer to pull that stuff that did it right.
Samuel Long
>made a point to have quick kick beat snake eyes at martial arts as a stand against whitewashing
god I fucking hate him already, he had snake eyes get his ass kicked to make a statement about ducking white washing, Jesus fucking Christ I'm legitimately annoyed by this and hopes he gets kicked off the book I get trying to push a message but luthor is just retarded
Jordan Adams
>Max Landis Who?
Nolan Williams
>rape his republican uncle Did he actually say rape?
Kevin Wright
>hasbro finnaly puts their foot down and places heavy restrictions on idw >they still manage to fuck it up. That wonderbolts don't fight dragons shit was retarded. I know everybody wants to pretend the episode it happened in never happened but it's not the wonderbolts people want retconed from that episode.
Caleb Price
>retweeted something aporovingly saying our "greatest leader" lincoln was closer to marx than bannon >he's a bernout >calls himself America's Favorite Socialist Comic Book Writer™ Ewwww, also I hate how people from western countries that aren't infested by Communism or have ever experience the dangers of an extremely leftist country (like Venezuela) worship Marx while benefiting from their capitalist countries.
>>made a point to have quick kick beat snake eyes at martial arts as a stand against whitewashing
I am all for humbling Snake Eyes (because outside of Hama and maybe Renegades, he is portrayed as a near unbeatable martial artists and often reaches Gary Stu levels of annoying) but that shit is stupid, especially since it was an Asian writer who made the decision to make Snake Eyes white. Snake Eyes wasn't a white savior nor did he appropriate Arashikage culture, he was accepted by the Arashikage.
>>relaunched gi joe as 'scarlett's strike force' (YASS QUEEN, SLAY!) I really don't see the problem with that considering that Duke was out and Colton was gone. I honestly don't know what happened to Hawk (if he even exists in the IDW, ditto for Flagg) but he doesn't seem to be in the picture either.
Scarlett is one of the highest ranking Joes and she was shown to be a leader in the comics and even in the old cartoons so why not?
Dominic Perry
You don't wanna know.
Leo Thompson
>Bendis has his eyes on him This scares me.
Brandon Martin
what's that supposed to mean you backwoods rube?
Juan Ramirez
>Honestly, I feel like there should be greater regulation by companies of what their employees spout off about on their official, public social media accounts, because on those accounts they're basically representing their employers.
And I feel that people should realize that what a person thinks on its own, is not the same thing as what his employer thinks, or his friends think, or his family thinks.
Because right now we are at the same level as the 50s eastern bloc, where you can get your life destroyed for thinking different (not even acting upon your beliefs - just by thinking them out loud), and your family and friends can be put under surveillance for something they not did, only because of their association to you.
Except that it is also much, much worse, as everyone is active on the Internet, so it takes one loser with too much time on his hand to dig up something you said years ago, and quote it out of context in a way that makes you look like a hypocrite or a Nazi. And that's enough to have people lose their jobs nowadays.
We are in full 1984 today, except that we don't even need a big brother, we can fuck each other over the same way.
Jeremiah Rodriguez
>This shared universe thing has been an ill conceived franchise killer.
Seconding. I stopped keeping up with Transformers now because everything is in some crossover I care nothing about.
At least TMNT has been mostly untouched, luckily.
Owen Campbell
Kek.
Aiden Green
>If you don't have a direct connection to something you can't sympathize and pay your respects to something
I get the idea that it's shitty to capitalize on a tragedy, but his comment is just moronic. Also
>Write for GI Joe >Shoving your politics everywhere It just seems in poor taste.
Caleb Sullivan
Years ago in SDCC in a Marvel panel, before IDW announced that they had the rights to ROM, a fan asked about ROM and Alonso said that if they ever got the rights to him that Bendis would be the one to
Bendis also said he wanted to write ROM and had Marvel had the rights to him he would have re-introduced ROM in his GotG run and probably make him part of the Guardians.
The other person that wants him in Marvel is James Gunn, he said that if Marvel had ROM he would pitch a movie for them.
Hunter Foster
>How the fuck do people not understand how to use social media where YOUR REAL NAME and YOUR FACE are visible for all to see?
Because Joe Writer, who works on the biggest comics of a big comic book company, will gather much more attention than LeetHacker666. And everyone wants attention, this is a fact.
And because social media giants actively encourage it. There are some sites which require real life identification to verify your account (LinkedIn), Facebook said it in the past that they are not tolerating fake people accounts either. They want you to post as much information of yourself as possible, because that is their real currency - knowing everything there is to know about you. This is used for targeted ads that they make money of, or just plain bartered on the black market.
You don't see warnings like on this pic anymore. Everybody wants your personal info.
Joseph Thompson
I feel like Gunn doing a Rom movie could be good, as long as he toned down the GOTG2 level obnoxious humor. The rest sounds awful.
Elijah Nguyen
>Bendis also said he wanted to write ROM and had Marvel had the rights to him he would have re-introduced ROM in his GotG run and probably make him part of the Guardians.
Technically the space-knights appeared in Annihilators before, which was sort of the group that came after GotG, so that KIND OF works. Of course, in practice, it would not, because Bendis would ignore EVERYTHING that happened there.
I still want to see if Quasar hooked up with that space knight chick or not, she had the hots for him.
Brandon King
They could have pulled the shared universe if it wasn't for the constant crossovers. One self contained crossover every 2 or 3 years would be fine.
Like the Transformers vs ROM crossover is pretty good, and it works because it doesn't interrupt any of the other stories.
Revolutionaries was a good idea but the stories weren't that great, the only highlight of that comic was Kup and Ian's relationship and maybe Blackrock's antics. Honestly trying to shove characters from every franchise in every issue also made it hard to follow.
Evan Long
I would be all for ROM returning to Marvel if Marvel wasn't what it is right now.
They would fuck him over pretty badly, at least Gage is doing good things with him in IDW.
Austin Stewart
>Scarlett is one of the highest ranking Joes and she was shown to be a leader in the comics and even in the old cartoons so why not? In and of itself I don't mind, but given his overall MO it seems like he's doing it as part of his agenda not organically, and do you realy need to put the name of the team leader in the title of the book?
Aiden Baker
I mean if a company didn't like your opinion you'd get fired 50 years ago. When you are an employee you have to conduct yourself in a way that doesn't make your company fire you. With social media you now have to act like a fucking adult and bite your tongue on a public forum. If you want to tweet stupid shit like this then use a fake name.
Luis Price
No one minds when right wingers lose their jobs for sharing unpopular opinions outside office hours, so we should extend left wingers the same treatment. Live by the sword, die by the sword.
William Jenkins
Yeah, no. There has never been a point in history where doing stupid shit on your own time that reflects poorly on the people you associate with couldn't have ramifications, like losing your job. This isn't about "thought crime", this is about "if you act like a retard and cause us to lose money because of your retardation, we will fucking cut you loose".
Benjamin Thompson
yeah
Dominic Robinson
Its important to remember that your race determines how good you are at a skill.
Gavin Edwards
Uhhh my penis....uhhhhh
Camden Morales
Did he put Scarlett's name in the title of the comic? Yeah that's weird then.
I mean being ignorant of what he tweeted, his handling of Scarlett was OK, but yeah he's not being innovative by making Scarlett the Joe leader since Renegades beat him on that front already.
Can't find it but I also read that interview with her Rodriguez and it looks like she wanted the comic.
Aubrey is done so they should definitely let her write it, and she has Skywarp to mess with too.
Oliver Hill
The only downside to the Gunn and ROM thing is that he said he wouldn't do ROM if Marvel didn't have the rights.
Luke Morris
>I am all for humbling Snake Eyes (because outside of Hama and maybe Renegades, he is portrayed as a near unbeatable martial artists and often reaches Gary Stu levels of annoying) but that shit is stupid, especially since it was an Asian writer who made the decision to make Snake Eyes white. Snake Eyes wasn't a white savior nor did he appropriate Arashikage culture, he was accepted by the Arashikage.
No one bothers with the difference anymore, which is one of the many chilling things about the cultural appropriation police. The whole endgame is basically outright isolationism isn't it?
Evan Carter
yeah the fucking feds got to them and told them to start using surveillance shit and cooperate with the nsa
