Actually user, most of the transformation to robot mode would be eliminating the space within the framework of the balloon.
In all honestly a Transformer with a Dirigible altmode wouldn't be that big in robot mode, mass shifting aside. Most of the the actually important bits would be contained within the underside Gondola, fins and engine pods.

The structure that gives it its shape is metal, the covers on it are fabric. The gas bags inside are also cloth and balloon type things that fit the outside structure
