The Smugineer is back from the distractions of trying not to be a loser at college(still am), with your latest dose of Reiko's Love Story! See? I told you i would make it like a ryukishi story. Only problem is i dont know how the fuck im going to write out of this..... I have to try to avoid Kill Bill AND inception ripoff at the SAME time

hehe, the expression at end is funny
Cool art
woah! is this hyw's first fujoshi?
uh. this is depressing
This art looks cool! Dont know what the story could be about other than shonen so far lol

Anyway, i may be still too scared to read any replies to my posts, but I sure hope tentacle guy is still keeping up with my comic! I think im going to write more of RLS more. You might be thinking
>when the fuck is the smugineer going to improve his art?
And my answer always is, as soon as i get an art gf!

Thanks. The WW2 era of Capeworld is filled with reimaginings of public domain superheros. Zhizhu is my take on The Spider Widow.

pdsh.wikia.com/wiki/Spider_Widow

She's pretty interesting in her own right-a bored socialite who controls spiders and whose superheroine disguise is a Halloween witch. She's also a romantic rival to Phantom Lady. But I need Chinese heroes for the setting and the idea of a walking reminder of the Rape of Nanking is too interesting an avenue not to pursue, especially getting into what happens once the war is over. Does she just stop killing? She's basically a serial killer that targets Japanese soldiers.

There's so much paranoia in the idea of someone who can track you through your facial mites and kill you with one spider bite or just drown you in spiders. I probably need to come up with a better design than just "woman in robes".

japan has a lot of spider monsters. as I tend towards fantasy slice of life, i'd love some kind of extended exploration of the different kinds. the difference between them, etc

well, it has bathing!

>Japan has a lot of spider monsters

Very interesting, especially with Zhizhu being Chinese. She should have some sort of interaction with whatever spider yokai Japan has.

oh yeah I'm sure they have their own too, probably with a lot of overlap
You ever wanna discuss that shiz, bring it up. I'll educate your ass

Sure! Tell me all you can about magic spiders.

don't remember if i posted this last night

Right so in Japan at least you've got your Jyourougumo ("whore-spiders") themed after those gigantic elaborate golden orb weavers they have over there with the big banana-ass abdomens. Looks just like a creepy eccentric lady most of the time, with some minor magic, fire summoning and shit, but if you get her naked you're gonna find out there's 8 spider legs hidden back there. Then you're dealing with a poison bite, maybe some of those needle hairs tossed your way.. yknow, not a fun time.
You have your Tsuchigumo, looking relatively like spindly, dirty hobos. named after those giant mygalomorph burrowing trapdoor spiders but also combined folklorewise with a disliked tribe of people thought to be a bunch of dirty thieves. They have the power to just transform into giant spiders
you have your Oogumo, which is just "Big spider" nasty red eyes on those, buncha horns all over the face usually. sometimes drawn more monstery and less accurately. Somewhat related you have one of the several kinds of Ushi-Oni (cow-oni), extremely-misnamed and varying critters whose distinguishing feature is cow horns (which oni already have??). One of them is an oni head on a spider body, or kind of a crab body. Hard to tell those apart without claws.
Most other mythological spiders across the world are either just normal spiders that enact crazy feats or just flat-out gods in spider form.
I couldnt find anything specific from china, but check this fucker out.

you're kind of forgeting the forehead. also, remember that messy hair adds volume to the skull.
you have room for improvement, user. keep it up.

flattened cranium seems to be an epidemic

I had no idea Japan had so many kind of spider yokai. I'm definitely going to have to do something with them. Possibly some kind of Halloween story. Thanks for the info!

what I always find interesting is how many seemingly unrelated youkai have fire powers, often just as a minor side-thing. in a shared universe I like to think it's because it's a volcanic archipelago, so it's just full of fire mana. Europe is more known for its nature-themed dealies living in the continent's ubiquitous deep woods.

>spiders
This might be cool

Amaterasu plays a big part of Capeworld Japan (all magical girls not from Croatoan get their power from blood she spilt after a battle with Pele) so you might be onto something about fire being relatively important to Japanese magic.

That moment when the design was cool but 20 minutes into drawing it you realized it was a mistake.

I don't know how Oh! Great! does it.

greatlooking designs are their own kryptonite
facial proportions are kinda weird in this one. really kinda all proportions are.

Yeah, a bit. The head in the second panel is throwing off everything else. I fixed that already.

I think the rest is passable. Nothing jumps out at me except maybe the third panel. But... ehhh... I don't know what to do about that one.

--Actually, it all hit me at once. I adjusted the book s a bit too.

...

...

>Oh! Great!

real bad

PSA: Bastardized anime is simply terrible to look at, please stop.
Pic related.

post work

no worse than that same artist when they conciously avoid anime so they wont get called names.

That looks good to me.

I'm trying to come up with the design for my comic character.
I'm still undecided on whether I want to go for a cartoony look or a more realistic one.
The tone of the comic is pretty mature so I wanna play with people's expectations and make it a cartoony character, but I think the problem with that is that is hard for me to draw them consistently.
Also I can't decide if I should make him short or just have all characters around 5 or 6 heads high.

you find cartoony styles harder to keep consistent?
I think this is a pretty good style overall, it's got a good potential mix of solid and over the top (especially that shouting head) but its offputting nature is less about its realism and more just about his proportions. There's exaggerated and then there's just something that comes off as wrong to the eye.
Overall I'd say let Edlund be your guide

If I never drew anything except anime, my work is as "bastardized" as an average Jap artist's is.

>replying to it

Are you referring to the proportions of the body or the face? Or both.

Everything is subject to change

mostly the body since the face is varying so much. like I said the shouty face looks the best, as does the one above it and the bottom right. Most of the others look too disproportionate.
but you're pretty consistent with the body here which is what leads me to think it's a mistake. Basically everything is just truncated but drawn the same as it would be otherwise, plus the shins are much shorter than the thighs. Instead of looking "chibi" it just looks like some kind of achondroplasia. he looks like he'd have trouble jacking off or wiping his ass.
What approximately are you going for? It kinda looks like pic related was your goal, but you've gotta loosen up for that. On the other hand if it was more of a simplified realism, i'd look more at Bruce Timm style and/or king of the hill

I guess I get too caught up on how the face should look that I don't think about the body that much.
I am trying to give him the proportions of a Dwarf, although I can't seem to decide whether I want him to be short or not, and since I'm used to drawing ideal body shapes I have less experience with exaggerated bodies.

the solution I think is to look at references like in your pic, I see that making his legs too small gives him a sense that he could fall at any time.

I guess Bruce Timm's way of drawing Wolverine is what I should be going for.

lewds soon

yeah that's a good look for sure.
You see how his midgetity isn't being applied by subtracting, but by adding. adding thickness to everything. broader delts, thicker forearms, etc. that looks pretty appealing because it gives you more of what you already have a lot of. Similarly everyone loves how hartman and tartakovsky draw ladies with their big giant hips. what you were doing here was more subtracting, or so it looks to me. decreasing the length of things and sometimes just cutting them off early

Going to go out and do more life-drawing tomorrow. I'm going to experiment a bit. I want to try some drawings where I start at the focal point with the most detail, and then rough in everything else. And maybe draw more close-ups too. I have no job so this is all I have to do.

Yep, its all about balance.
Now that I think about it, my sketches feel really off balance, and not just in the proportions but I feel like I'm putting a lot of stuff in there, lots of folds for the pants, and shirt, its distracting to the eye, I should be following the rules of design, big, medium and small, where big is the overall shape but also the areas of rest, I forget what medium is but its less detailed than small, where a lot of detail can go in a way that feels more appealing to the eye.

>start at the focal point with the most detail, and then rough in everything else.
that's... neat.
yeah I wasn't going to discourage you since I love your cloth folds and your musculature, they just clash with the apparently semi-cartoony thing you're trying to do.
bruce timm tends to get tons across with very few well-placed cloth folds, and simple geometric shapes 'playing the part' of living anatomy.

>I start at the focal point with the most detail, and then rough in everything else.
You probably already know this, but just in case, that's the opposite of a good workflow. Usually, you'd want to start by roughing in everything and then clean up the important parts.

Finished the newest Monster Lands page. The Destructor is reaching the final stages of his character development. monster-lands.com/

Here's a cover I finished for a future chapter.

And here's another cover.

I need some writing advice.

I'm plotting out a story that starts off seeming like a silly lesbian porn parody of a fantasy RPG where the fanservice is shallowly justififed in-universe, but then becomes more of a serious story as the characters discover that their world is the way it is because a demon took over the world and remade it according to its own sexual fantasies.

I'm worried, though, that anyone getting into it because of the hot naked girls will get turned off by the more serious worldbuilding parts, and that people looking for serious fantasy adventure will dismiss it as shallow fap fodder before I get to the twist.

So far here's my ideas to keep things from clashing too much
>1, make sure to foreshadow that there's more to the story within the first chapter
>2, base the characters' skimpy outfits on real-world African/S-American/Polynesian cultures with skimpy outfits, rather than real-world strippers or swimsuits
>3, no matter how serious things get, remember to never abandon the "sexy girls looking sexy" angle

Any thoughts or suggestions?

I would play up the sexual fantasies to a ridiculous extreme, and use them to parody sexism or sexist depictions of woman. For example, they complete a dungeon and find the treasure room, and instead of gold, ladies are piled up on top of each other lying in seductive poses as if they were waiting for male adventurers.

Start using a trip so I can filter you out, here and on /ic/. Thanks.

I feel like that idea would work better with a straight woman protagonist, or at least in a setting where lesbians were uncommon.

Maybe for a similar effect, somebody the characters know has been kidnapped by a monster and given some kind of damsel-in-distress drug that makes her uncharacteristically throw herself at whoever rescues her. Depending on how high I want to dial the squick, it could be a platonic friend, a sibling or other close relative, or even her child.

In any case, I was more interested in ideas for how to keep the fantasy and fan service at 11 without either driving off the people interested in the other one.
If anyone here had experiences where story focusing too much on one made them lose interest, or stories that managed to integrate the two seamlessly.

I'm new to this thread, is there a booru where I can see the previous winners or entrees?

I don't think so but I'd like that too. Some kind of archive with all the previous first places would be neat. At the end of the year we could vote for an overall winner with a strawpoll that's up for the last week of december or something like that.

The user who usually manages the balots doesn't have a trip so I don't know ir I'm adressing the right person here with these suggestions

We could even start like an hyw comic anthology of all the themes as chapters. Just upload it to some webcomic site and post all entries into one chapter after each entry

Someone's about to get there bum pounded arnt they....I'm have traumatic flashbacks

My guy, have any streamers commissioned you to do art work lately?

What do you guys do when you feel your comic is boring or has too much exposition? I've only begun writing my story, and I'm trying to show off how my main character lives and what his life is like. I start is his appartment and he meets some of his friends on his way and they talk about some trouble he's in which is kind of what gets the plot going. I wonder if I can make things a bit more interesting. More actiony

just draw some titties

In my experience, the trick with writing in general but especially exposition, is to have scenes do more than one thing at a time.
The scenes where you get to know your characters and world should also drive the plot forwards or be funny or sexy or full of explosions. Comics are nice in that you can have characters talk about one thing while they're doing something else, which lends itself well to multi-purpose panels.
So, first off, try to cut out all the exposition you won't need right now.
Second, if there's any exposition that be told visually rather than verbally, do that. Stuff like showing the main character's name on his door, rather than having him introduce himself to his best friend.
Third, see if you can add a minor conflict to resolve while they're talking. Maybe your character overslept and is late for work or something.
Fourth, add jokes, vistas, tits, etc to distract the audience from all the info you're dumping on them.

Clothes provide magic resistance. I had this as an explanation for 'knights in shining armor' as part of the history of the world for a comic that didn't take off. Magic users were mostly scantily clad nubile girls because they channeled their life force.

I was actually just gonna handwave the lack of armor by saying that the hot, humid climate and value of metal makes it impractical for our protagonists, but now that you mention it, maybe I could explain it away with magical tattoos or scarification or war-paint that stops working if you cover it up.

yeahp, pretty much, just a few more pages till then

I got you senpai.

>i fight to fight!
truly he has come a long way.

I suggest you check out the comics found here comicfury.com/profile.php?username=view if for no other reason than they are surely up your alley
current one is a semi-serious fantasy and .. I mean, everyone loves and respects view

Otherwise just make sure the sexy feels like "adventure novel sexy" where they all feel like they have normal libidos rather than clownishly exaggerated ones, and are simply more open with it either due to their fantasy culture or because of the omniscient narrator.

My suggestion would be to have a story that you want to tell for more of a reason than simply subverting a trope.

Yeah, clothes tie their (free and lewd) spirits down in some elaborate mumbo-jumbo. It's like being handcuffed, spiritually. Work up any symbolism with ropes and knots.
They'll have to strip to fight (means you don't have to draw naked bodies in boring scenes) and they can wear clothes if the environment requires them.
Also baddies immobilizing our intrepid heroes by putting them in bags.

Bastardized anime is the worst and instant turn off for me, I'd rather read bones or dewd's, hell even CF's comic if it meant avoiding that horrible style, it's disgusting. It's like reading a middleshoolers scribbles

Updated the fanart page for West Tree

Finally getting to post all of that Saudra fanart after 4 years feels pretty good.

freakanimes.com/westtree/?page_id=650

>I mean, everyone loves and respects view
Pardon me if I sound a little rude, but could you explain why? Nothing about what I read really stood out to me.

> normal libidos rather than clownishly exaggerated ones
Could you give an example of the dividing line between the two?

I'm not sure what point you're making. There's more to the story than the parts I've mentioned, but those parts aren't the ones I feel unsure about.

I don't know if I want to spend too long justifying it in the story with metaphysics. Readers generally want to suspend their disbelief, and something less specific like "it's bad luck to cover your clan markings" leaves less chance for inconsistencies that'll ruin it.

The fuck? Those comics are shit. Worse than Dewd's

No they aren't.
I just picked one of them randomly (Scrub Diving) and it's an adorable yuri comic with lots of problems but much better art and (more importantly) pacing than anything dewd has ever made.
The character design very much has the tumblr/deviantart aesthetic that is so loathed on Sup Forums but that's a minor issue compared to dewds problems. I'd even go as far as to say this comic is above average for hyw standards.

I second this motion!

/lit/ put out a book years ago, Sup Forums made attempts at short films and I'm sure Sup Forums made games too.
I realize there's been this jojo thing but I'm not really sure what it was all about or even if it was a real comic so I'd say turning the challenge into some sort of Sup Forums comic project is a fantastic idea.

I should just leave this page alone and move on, shouldn't I.

Yes it's plenty beautiful, next please

Well I guess that settles that then.

just finished page 9 and 10

how is it, I just got photoshop so, I should be able to stop using kritas font.

page 10

oh god. my eyes.

don't color if you can't get the line art right. color does not make a terrible drawing fundamentally better.

did you draw character models or are you drawing them from the top of your head for each pose?

if the latter, you'll end up optimizing and drawing the same exact angle and pose again and again. It's a gradual, unconscious slide that too many artists fail to notice.

I draw from initial sketches that are more or less basic shapes and then I draw on top of that on another layer

i always love the idea that there are simply options
in the same way that we have the options of metal plate or leather or mail or ceramic plate or kevlar-type weave, they would have all of those plus enchanted cloth, enchanted armor (obviously DIFFERENT enchantments work on metal), etc. it would be like customizing smash bros 4 characters. the slow shit, you'd lighten. the light shit, you'd strengthen even if it makes it heavier.

view just draws really cozy, cute sex with a lot of expressiveness and cute squirmy stuff. that one comic (not linked there i think?) with the guy skinny dipping with those ladies or whatever it was.... maan.. good stuff.
What makes it seem legit to me is when it's reasonably something hormones would drive you to do and express, rather than something a drama coach would suggest.

>The character design very much has the tumblr/deviantart aesthetic that is so loathed on Sup Forums
first of all, those are two different, almost opposite things (actually each one is multiple things). secondly, no it doesn't. any of them. I don't think you could get much further from the truth.
and I like all of those equally, sort of, but I see the differences. For one thing view loves soft round faces and big ears, with often very small, realistic-ish eyes. nobody else draws those

lol she doesn't know from bears
skalmy's face looks nice here. rrl nice.

It does make it look better though, and it sure doesn't hurt anything. Of all the advice you could give this kid, "don't color" shouldn't have made it onto the list.

I hate you but I want fans like yours

>Silly lesbian porn parody of fantasy RPG but then becomes more of a serious story as they discover a demon took over the world and remade it according to its own sexual fantasies

I don't know. Having the third act be "Ha! See? It's actually deep because the story acknowledges being a sex fantasy!" seems pretty shallow.

It feels sort of like Hotline Miami or Undertale where they try to be too clever for their own good and end up becoming obnoxious. Do you have plan to keep it from becoming obnoxious?

how about, "if you want your drawing to be appealing, focus first on getting the process right in the early stages, or else it won't matter what you do in the later stages."

I'm all for learning how to shade and refine one's work, but advocating for "lipstick on a pig" is the opposite of what Sup Forums is about.

Get your shapes right. Draw your character models separately, in different poses and different reactions so when you actually develop your scene you don't need to develop it all from scratch.

That kind of burden gets really frustrating and your mind will compensate by seeking shortcuts, a.k.a. the same face, same angle, repeated over and over again.

Just gotta make likeable characters that the audiance find funny or can relate too.

>how about
that sounds like a much better way of putting it. I now agree

Is this fanboyism or are you the faggot himself? The stuff is extremely mediocre scribbles

...

whoops, forgot to say words.
uh, a thing. heroic sacrifice ahoy. I wrestled with this plot really fucking hard all the way from back when it was just a vague outline approximately "a tormented guy shows up who might also be used against them because he's lost his mind from spending time in hell guarding against the final boss"

You know even if he would deny being in the group, he really deserves a slot in the cast page after this.

Why is nearly everyone barefoot?

I've been gone for the last week due to the Hurricane Irma taking my power out.
I did draw a little, but not much since i mostly draw at night. And with total darkness... that's not gonna work out...
but here i am now
i was worried my computer got fried but looks like it's fine
glad to be alright

Just kinda ended up that way. Sasha was planned, she's the wild woman and all. Hel originally had heels-connected-to-pants like her mom, then sandals, then upon her last redesign I thought foot wraps would work. they're enchanted with damage resist so they're just as good.
Uhh Kimchi's powers have developed to the point that he automatically softens wherever he walks with grass.
Riven and Robin used to wear boots, but the latter was based on a friend of mine who, upon seeing her character, wanted her barefoot instead. Suits a fairy. with Riven I found if I kept her in boots I forgot whether she had 3 or 4 toes, so I went with oversized legwarmers because those are great.
Er and um Gyomudo has fucking talons and comes from a Martian desert. he probably is getting his share of blisters in our gravity and on rocky ground though.
