A character doesn't need extreme depth to be used as a joke. They served their purpose well, and I think the touch of using Bellum as a logical smart voice of reason for the girls was a nice decision. A character group doesn't need this deep dynamic or lore for them to serve their purpose which was to either A. Guide the girls in a time of confusion/conflict, or B. Set up a joke/monster fight.
That's what a lot of writes forget now. They try to add depth to everything. Even a background tree because they think that makes quality. It just takes focus away from the stars on stage which the show should be about.
