Nah. With games, retailers will not sell your game if it gets and AO rating. With TV, The FCC places restrictions on networks that shows have to abide by. Getting a higher age rating means that the show is big enough to forego these restrictions through preferential treatment.

Nobody pays attention to TV ratings. Movie ratings USED to be a pretty big deal (which is why The Matrix was considered a big deal for making so much money with an R rating, but by the time we got to Deadpool, only people trying to stick a feather in DC's cap cared), but for TV it's never mattered because there's no actual way to police it.

A plain TV-MA is basically the same thing as an M rating from thr ESRB. The only TV rating that comes close to AO is probably TV-MA (S).
AO is basically an NC-17 rating.

For some of the "coarser" words, yeah. Even with an MA rating, there are some words that still can't be said on particular channels.
The FCC seems to keep it vague and nonsensical. 'Shit' was recently allowed to be unbleeped on tv, but 'faggot' has been placed on the bleep list and 'asshole' is bleepible, too.
