>rewatch the last season of Steven Universe >then finish Made In Abyss
Do you think Rebecca Sugar knows what she's competing with? I feel like a lot of western animators are still playing in the kiddie pool because the critics for western animation don't know any better.
As if anime's critics are any better. Even most anime fans agree that like 90% of anime is fucking trash.
Joseph Collins
This. For every Berserk there's hundreds of Narutos.
Caleb Davis
I cunt believe we are supposed to take that transformation seriously.
Adam Ortiz
>Even most anime fans agree that like 90% of anime is fucking trash.
but there's so fucking much of it that we get at least 1 or 2 really good anime shows per season.
I mean, last summer was complete shit (with RE Creators being a particular letdown) but we got Made in Abyss and Princess Principal out of it
Eli Watson
>competing with yet another pseudo intelligent muh worldbuilding and horrible things happening to characters designed to be cute
William Green
>Made in Abyss >Princess Principal >good
Thomas Bailey
How is MiA pseudo intellectual?
Alexander Collins
>Do you think Rebecca Sugar knows what she's competing with? Teen Titans Go?
Connor Carter
What good cartoons are airing right now? DuckTales? Maybe OK KO (haven't watched so I can't judge)? pony (haven't been keeping up so not sure)? Even if you weren't exaggerating, and 90% was trash, there's so few good western cartoons per year compared to anime released, or ongoing, that the "10%" dwarfs them. I'm not against cartoons, quite the opposite, I want there to be more good cartoons produced in the west with better stories or more mature themes/subject matter without being yet another adult comedy.
Aiden Murphy
>Implying you've seen either of those shows >Implying you even know what they are
William Brown
>"insert your favourite show here" >good smuganimetrap.jpg
This is why I don't use Sup Forums
Jonathan Powell
You shouldn't have bothered responding to that bait post once he started spouting those buzzwords. He only saw 1 clip and didn't even read the show's synopsis.
Landon Turner
I think the Japanese are just more creative with their torture porn. Whenever a western story wants to reach "peak level" of fucked up they just do the rape route and call it quits.
I wouldn't say it makes the show better, but they have far more freedom to push boundaries and really get on people's skin.
Zachary Peterson
How does Made in Abyss compete with Steven Universe? It aired during the SU hiatus and now it's done. That's how anime works. You get 12 episodes, based off a manga or light novel, and it stops. You don't get a proper conclusion because the show is promotional material for the book - which at that point, the artists/writer will do 1 more volume and then abandon the story. And you never find out what the aliens really are.
Austin Scott
>Naruto is le bad meme
Jack Richardson
I wanted to watch Made in Abyss, but it seemed like lolishota torture porn. And I'm fine with shota, but the pandering and such from what people posted looked weird.
Matthew Rodriguez
OP here, it's more that Steven Universe's periphery demographic of 20-somethings (the ones who show up to all the cons) are also watching shows like Made in Abyss.
You've got a lot of parents praising Steven Universe on podcasts like Slate's Cultural Gabfest, but now we've gotten to the point where western animation is in direct conflict with the likes of Crunchyroll and Animestrike for viewers, and it just can't compete. Nanachi and Mitty's backstory was arguably more heartwrenching than almost all of Steven Universe's drama.
Lucas Carter
what is that thing with cat ears?
John Scott
>now we've gotten to the point where western animation is in direct conflict with the likes of Crunchyroll and Animestrike for viewers, and it just can't compete. No we haven’t. Anime is a niche market in the West; it’s almost always been that way.
Brody Richardson
Jissouseki, japanese precursor to fluffy ponies.
Jason James
the setting is a mix of Horihone Saizou's Drainage City and Blame!, but the main characters are these adorable kids with ungodly amounts of determination that keep going through horrible shit with their souls still intact
Hunter Sullivan
>Nanachi and Mitty's backstory was arguably more heartwrenching than almost all of Steven Universe's drama. That’s really a good frame of reference.
Grayson Martinez
I, too, would gladly welcome Western cartoons showing cute robotic shota being molested.
Grayson Davis
So basically you’re using a SU hatethread to shill an anime you like. That’s some major autism.
Colton Watson
It's pretty embarrassing, and never really lets up.
Christopher Barnes
Steven Universe is weird. It's got a lot of really good writing, especially about relationships and good or toxic they can become. I just feel like Rebecca Sugar and her writing staff are being pulled in opposite directions a lot of the time.
Rebecca finally got to head her own animated show, and she gets to throw all these ideas she's had since she was in high school at it, but at the same time the target demo is still 6-11. So sometimes the show feels like Bojack Horseman, and other times it feels like Arthur. It doesn't help that the show is shackled to Cartoon Network, who clearly has no idea what to do with it. The good news is that her peers like JG Quintel and Alex Hirsch are done with their shows and can now work on more mature fare that (hopefully) lets them stretch their creative muscles in a more adult format.
I think Steven Universe has one more season in it. If Rebecca can stick the landing and end on a good note, then a lot of the pointless filler and boring shit can be written off. If the show just withers away for another 3 delayed seasons then it will probably be forgotten and washed aside.
Jacob Cook
>The good news is that her peers like JG Quintel and Alex Hirsch are done with their shows and can now work on more mature fare that (hopefully) lets them stretch their creative muscles in a more adult format. You don’t know how “mature” animation works in America, do you?
Nathan Lewis
>THIS COMPETES WITH STEVEN UNIVERSE! THIS *HIGH CULTURE* WILL SURELY THREATEN LESSER AMERICAN SHOWS!
and it's just more of the same old shitty creepy pedo japanese child rape crap, wow, I am so eager
Justin Gray
>You don’t know how “mature” animation works in America, do you?
It's gonna be somewhere in between Bojack Horseman and The Nutshack. Here's hoping it's the former
Easton Murphy
I so sincerely hope that it just ends next season on a good hard wrap. It's all I ask, just one note of completion for once so it can end and move on.
Jayden Ross
>So sometimes the show feels like Bojack Horseman, and other times it feels like Arthur. I’ve seen SU and I can tell you this statement is bullshit.
Colton Lewis
You’re holding on to a pipe dream. You keep bringing up Bojack Horseman but let’s face it; it was a lucky fluke, the exception rather than the rule. To this day, adult animation basically means raunchy, violent, gross or some combination thereof and I don’t see that changing soon.
Anthony Sullivan
westerns have not a thing to worry about things like that they are so obscenely japanese they'll never become famous.
And made in abyss is loligore trash. Virtually nothing special about it.
Alexander Price
With all the plot lines going on, it’ll need at least a seventh season to tie everything up neatly as possible.
Apparently anime is a 20+ billion dollar market in China alone, is there a similar point of reference for cartoons?
I always thought anime was more popular worldwide but in america is still niche.
Jayden Martinez
Naaaaah, I doubt that much. It just needs one solid good season to tie it together into the coming war, and finish it off. I can see plenty of ways to write it tight.
Hunter Robinson
>Do you think Rebecca Sugar knows what she's competing with?
Yeah: other televised children's cartoonists.
You think SU's target demo is fucking searching up obscure subbed anime on their own? Maybe you'd at least kind of have a point if MiA was on Netflix, but it's not even there.
Acting like she or anyone else here actually has to compete with anime is pretty asinine.
Landon Roberts
>Shonen >Ever Good
Stick to Rick and Morty kid
Carter Kelly
>"It might be, kind of, I didn't use the whole thing!"
oh god it fits perfectly
Connor King
compare anime with western gay shit, fuck you baitola
Hudson Cruz
and yeah there is no competition, people will watch BOTH because the fucking internet allows you to watch anything, anywhere, anytime, as long as you like, as much as you like
there's nothing to goddamn compete with save TV showtime slot fuckery and merch shit and CN doesn't seem interested in making that happen for any of their properties
William Garcia
the very best of american tv animation does not even scratch the best tv anime
Caleb Hall
Well to be fair, American animation has strict labor laws whereas in Japanese animation, you work till you die.
Jace White
in american tv animation you play with computer models or send storyboards off to korea whereas in japanese tv animation you animate important frames and use korean slaves appropriately
Liam Parker
>Made In Abyss vs. Steven Universe
I know this is bait but what the fuck do they have in common besides the most superficial levels. You gonna compare Eva and Sym-Bionic? Gargoyles and Fate?
Ian Adams
Why do you think anyone should worry about competition? You just admitted to watching both.
Juan Anderson
>being this wrong "The day the night stopped beginning to shine and became dark even though it was the day" is the coolest animated shit of the year
Jason Clark
>implying Japanese don’t play with computer models for their animation
Brody Kelly
At least Naruto kept a constant schedule
Charles Edwards
yes the ever popular kemono friends exists and dozens of other cg anime along with the cg effects in basically every modern anime, but americans -only- can do cg work as animation nowadays
Cameron Brown
>retard tripfag being a retard Nothing new to see here.
Justin Baker
>HxH runs in the same magazine as Naruto >Never kept a constant schedule >Is far better than Naruto What did he mean by this?
Christopher Cox
>but americans -only- can do cg work as animation nowadays Except that’s wrong.
Kevin Brown
Korean and Philippines outsourcing is less than 30% in most seasonal shows, unless it's children anime made by Perriot or Toei in which case it's more like 70%, but you still get your share of good, Japanese made animation from time to time, even with trash like Naruto. I highly doubt traditional 2D animators even exist in the west anymore.
Jason Walker
Alex Hirsch is going nowhere
Justin Kelly
Unfortunately. However Anime does more things than Cartoons by a wide margin despite the failures.
Oliver Garcia
brainlet until we start treating anime kids the same way we treat the kids in live action sitcoms the west will never compete
Logan Phillips
did his pilot on Fox get cancelled?
Oliver Rogers
>I highly doubt traditional 2D animators even exist in the west anymore. Doesn’t Steven Universe use traditional 2D animation?
Jason James
...
Jeremiah Jenkins
It fell through
Henry Torres
>trying to get your show greenlit on network television
I don't know what he was thinking to be honest.
Angel Fisher
>However Anime does more things than Cartoons by a wide margin despite the failures. Such as?
Angel Morgan
Camp Camp is better than every cartoon on TV.
Jeremiah Gray
Yes... Unfortunately.
David Martinez
Probably foot fetishism going by who is in their reaction image.
Nathan Peterson
>animated show made by a bunch of texans who used to videotape themselves dicking around on Halo
Every year I am more impressed by how far Rooster Teeth has come.
Ryder Garcia
>I don't know what he was thinking to be honest. Hubris. Disney came to him for a show. He got a big ego over time. I mean, how could anyone refuse to make HIS show, the great prodigy?
Ethan Gomez
Not him but anime has a wide range of genres made for a wide range of demographics.
With cartoons you mostly get kiddie trash or kiddie trash that unironic manchildren watch like Rick and Morty or MLP, also adult comedy, but that's pretty much it.
Jonathan Cruz
>JG Quintel and Alex Hirsch >more mature fare Pick one
John James
But he was the great prodigy. Disney didnt even can his show like all the other schmucks, he cancelled on them, Disney wanted more. The fans were worshiping him as a genius. How would you not feel like hot shit.
Landon Jones
Except the problem of SU is that it feels it must focus on the townies instead of letting the story unfold on the interstellar conflict.
There is a reason why townie episodes are infamous. They're like Rick and Morty episodes that focus on Beth and Jerry's bullshit instead of the crazy good shit.
Brody Murphy
> how could anyone refuse to make HIS show, the great prodigy?
Networks could. But cable channels and especially Netflix would give him whatever he wanted after Gravity Falls. It's no accident he got Louis CK to do a voice in the finale, there were tons of comedians and celebrities who fucking loved his show.
Lucas Lopez
Not him but Im guessing genres. I dont think you could name a single cartoon that does the same thing as Another. Comparing anime to cartoons most of the time is like apples to oranges. Anime should be compared to normal live action television for anything that isnt battle shonenshit and such.
Carter Clark
Real talk. Why is SU and it's fanbase so fucking bad?
Eli Ward
Didn't you post this yesterday?
You watch anime, your opinion on everything is invalid. Stop posting.
Compare how Made in Abyss used music to tell a story to how Steven Universe used music
Ian Morales
Why is tumblr bad?
Aiden Perry
Because you keep validating them with attention. Good work, dumbfuck!
David Sullivan
Are they?
Juan Flores
I don't watch SJW universe, how do they use it?
Jason Lee
Weak bait. Most people hate them and have never actually responded to their bullshit
Charles Flores
SU sings songs, whats so bad about that? Music is wasted on that show imo
Jacob Morgan
Poorly
Angel Perry
>bullshit What bullshit?
Josiah Edwards
>SU sings songs, whats so bad about that The songs are complete shit
Eli Young
Hirsch cancelled on them because he was tired, not because he had some sort of personal pride. Early on he kept yapping about 3 seasons but he changed his tone after realizing how fucking hard and time-consuming making a show actually is.
In fact, at one point he was contemplating quitting after season 1, leaving everyone with that cliffhanger. And after that he only wanted to wrap everything up with just 10 episodes, until Disney forced him to do 20, due to their seasonal policies.
Luis Gomez
That isn't bait, chunklord. You all make threads to complain, seek out places to complain, look for validation for your complaints by validating the worst of what you find. You feed this shit and you like it that way, because it allows you to do the same thing, every time, like a fucking soiled comfort blanket that's melded to your skin.
You're fucking boring!
Cameron Fisher
Wrong.
Ethan Long
Who would want a toy of Pig Lips?
Ryder Stewart
WE
Joshua Allen
It's shit, though. They even had to bring a shitty Trigger animator once
Xavier Nelson
McFarlane toys really dropped in quality
Aaron Robinson
Fans of the show, presumably. Although why anyone would want any of those horrible sets is beyond me
Cameron Harris
I guess thicc is hard to represent in block format
Chase Perry
>Trigger
Gavin Foster
Songs are either obvious attempts at emotional manipulation with lyrics that spell out what you're supposed to feel or generic background noise.
