It used to be something different. The family was already in town for thanksgiving so it was easy for all the adults to go out as a group and pick out upcoming christmas presents for children without anyone buying duplicates, etc. Companies realized this trend and started having massive sales. Poors and dumbs started to figure out they could get good deals and chimped out if there was a limited supply. The media love to sensationalize things and now you have the image of it that you're referring to.
