Balance in the force means little dark side (which realistically can't be destroyed completely) and a lot of light side. I feel like they could still make Mara Jade and Kyle Katarn work in nucanon if they set them after the ST. Like maybe Mara Jade is one of the Knights of Ren who used to be a force sensitive kid in Hux' programs in the Empire. She starts to realize that the First Order is fucking crazy compared to the Empire so in between 8 and 9 she leaves and later joins Luke and Rey's Jedi Order. Then Kyle Katarn can just be some bounty hunter or something around the time of the ST who encounters the Jedi who sense his force potential and then begin training him. They could be in their late 30s/early 40s right in the middle of Luke and Rey's age groups.

See that's the thing. Practicing dark side is unacceptable. And as you said it's impossible to eradicate. Without the dark side there's no passion as well. It's part of a lot of negative emotions, yes, but it's intense emotion. Hate is the most common part but love and whatnot can be twisted into the dark side. What I'm trying to get at is that the old Jedi order was all about completely purging ones own dark side. But doing that is bad. You have to accept you have darkness and overcome it. That was literally the old Jedi orders problem. They purposely chose to have no experience with it and paved the way for Palpatine to blindside them.
