cerebus got breddy friggin weird

Regarding Saga

Having characters in your science fiction setting just soapbox about political issues going on in the real world is fucking lazy and bad writing, BKV can't be bothered to make the tiniest effort to dress them up in allegory ,even something as paper thin as your average Star Trek episode.

they'll probably never understand it because it's been out of print for years

...

You can read it online
Hell, IIRC the first two phonebooks are legally downloadable from Dave himself

Cerebus is celebrated by Reddit when it's mentioned.
It's just never mentioned.

Cerebus is simultaneously an argument for and against having an editor.

I got the first four phonebooks on amazon and I'm reading through the first, about halfway through. I'm assuming it will pick up because right now it seems like some pretty bog-standard parody-stuff that was a dime a dozen at the time period. I am enjoying the art, though, will say that. Weird seeing a parody of Elric written to sound like fucking Foghorn Leghorn.

No one on this site who talks about tumblr has actually browsed that site for more than three seconds.

Whenever anyone speaks about tumblr on this site is then referring not to the site itself but a fictional boogyman which is used to silence dissenting voices fearful of being pushed into the outgroup and out of the imagined secret clubhouse.

Congrats, you're why this site is shit.

Right whatever what's that got to do with Cerebus tho? lol

Yeah volume one is the Conan parody stuff, volume two is when it becomes something else. Although I'd say that it's important to meet the characters in the first volume who play larger roles like the Elric parody and Groucho Marx

I don't think they would get Faust

What can I expect going forward?

>Post Sup Forums stuff that Reddit and tumblr will never understand

It gets political, and is legitimately funny, and is interesting as hell. After Cerebus ends his political/religious career, the series gets a completely different pace.

There is a very long fight that takes up almost a quarter of the series, then Dave Sim tries to convert you to his strange religious belief and the series becomes unreadable.

It's worth reading the last volume though, because Cerebus' end is the perfect note for the series to go out on.

The first 200 issues are all that's "essential," but like said, the final volume is worth a read. "Guys" through "Latter Days" has its strengths though. Sim never stops tweaking the execution of the series and the art and especially lettering take on a whole new character in the back hundred issues.

Fucking insanity.

The comic evolves into a big ass narrative about the nature of life before it goes too far and becomes inextricably linked to exploring DAVE'S life and his interpretation of his own life. It's a swirling vortex of self-loathing and insanity and hate.

>it's another "we 4channers are so special" thread

We are, though. Saying otherwise is pretty Reddit, and at worst Tumblr.

nah, 4channers are as special as anyone else, only they're infinitely more conceited

What are you talking about you memeing shitter? Are you seriously acting like websites are a collective hivemind? I mean a 5 second google search shows there are posts on Cerebus the aardvark, it's not some sekwit 4chns club or anything.

Is this some kind of Brave New World or 1984 speak?
>We are, though. Saying otherwise is pretty Reddit, and at worst Tumblr.

See for yourself.

>im special because I post on a chinese cartoon forum

That's a retarded thing to say fella. Identity based on website you use is dumb.

Instead, post Sup Forums related things women will never understand.

>hates Sup Forums
>frequents Sup Forums and sides with inferior sites
hmmmmmm

Yes. I am. To say otherwise is defeatist.

>hates Sup Forums
nope, I like Sup Forums, 4channers can be irritating - as any other community

>implying you didn't all read this in carl's voice

Beta NuMale Cucks will NEVER understand Alpha Stark.

my little sister loves aqua teen

How old is She?

>fictional boogyman
So you're telling me every single screencap of tumblr being shitty is fake?
Considering the sheer amount of caps, I refuse to believe that.

Bro, I browse Tumblr all time (reading metas is fun, yo) and I think Sup Forums goes too easy on them.
Many of the people there are legitimately insane.

They've got the whole thing at my LCS.

>Whenever anyone speaks about Sup Forums on this site is then referring not to the site itself but a fictional boogyman which is used to silence dissenting voices fearful of being pushed into the outgroup and out of the imagined secret clubhouse.
FTFY

Now I don't waste my time on other sites, I've just been here too damn long, but pretending Sup Forums is some high class place with the brightest minds is just willful ignorance. 9/10 people here are worthless and would be better off dead.
We do have our eternal hero Boco though, at least there's that.

Sup Forums is just tumblr for right wing edgelords. If anything they're more annoying only because they're more prevalent here.

Nah, they're equally annoying.
The fact that Sup Forums's right-wing doesn't make it any better or worse than Tumblr's left-wing bullshit.

Tumblr is for porn and it's best to leave it at that

I read it in Master Shake's.

>Instead, post Sup Forums related things women will never understand.

My wife actually loves Aquateen and Carl is her favorite character.

Tumblr left wing is ruining comics though

I own a tumblr that has quite a bit of follows, but I still hate the place and think everybody there needs a stick up their arse.

"special" is the key word here.

To me it's an argument to make sure you dose your psychedelics correctly

Guys is pretty excellent thematically (I think it's actually a pretty nuanced commentary on male/female hetero relations) and has some of Sim's top cartooning. I don't think it truly becomes bad until the Hemmingway story.

Fuck you I've viewed a lot of porn on there

>most of these barely crack a 100 notes

>Guys
Reading the accents triggers a very specific kind of disconnect in my reading comprehension. I have to "sound out" all of the sentences in my head first and it exhausts me to read. But yeah, Guys is fine, I just have some personal hangups with it.

I needed this in my life today.

Tumblr is all about supporting people with mental illnesses

No, they hate Cerebus and Sim. They think DC rebirth and Image comics is the peak of the medium.

So they're Sup Forums.

>Sup Forums
>hating cerebus
Whut

Comics & Cartoons

Only like 10 people in all of Sup Forums have actually read Cerebus.

I'm tempted to start a Cerebus storytime. Is there any demand for such a thing?
this.

Nobody will read it.

Maybe if you did issue #20 with the OP text "This was considered mind-blowing in 1980."

>Congrats, you're why this site is shit.
Could you BE more of a tumblrite?

You're probably right, and that sucks, because Cerebus is pretty relevant today. I don't mean that exactly in a "Sim was right" kind of way either.

I can't be 10% of the population that's read it on the board, the discussion threads are way too surprisingly good for that
Except that storytime from 2 or 3 years ago was very well received

Issue 20 is definitely a good one to storytime though. Do a single issue storytime thread and I'll jump on after you with Hellblazer 56

someone storytimed the entire thing a few years back

Sim was right... about creator-ownership and writing-for-the-trade.

What was his opinion on writing for the trade?

>10% of the population
This is an amazing fantasy world that you've constructed for yourself.

Read through a few Cerebus threads and you'll find yourself reading the exact same posts by the exact same posters time after time after time.

He is in favor of the practice. The issues will be forgotten. The trades are what will stand the test of time.

He also pioneered TPB sales through the direct market. No one else was doing collected editions in the 80's. From volume 2 onwards, Cerebus arcs were written specifically with the trade in mind.

>a fictional boogyman
[citation needed]

>Read through a few Cerebus threads and you'll find yourself reading the exact same posts by the exact same posters time after time after time.
The unique poster count is still well over 10, often going over 100. It's a niche comic yes, but it's not that niche

Most people in this thread didn't come here to discuss Cerebus. They came here to discuss Reddit and Tumblr, as per the OP.

Interesting considering Sim could write single issues so well.

He was also right about the Church of Cirin, that's fairly accurate too.

Most of everything after issue 180 is kinda meh but it does start to get decent again when the Stooges show up. Simms has quite an interesting interpretation of the distinction between Yahweh and God around that time too. It's worth reading through just for the insanity even if it's a slog and a half until the final chapter.

Not talking about this thread, just Cerebus threads in general

There's a difference between writing for trade and writing for trade only.

I haven't been forcibly confined to my local tavern yet. Have you?

>the one guy that thinks Sim is being completely literal with his critique of feminism and that everyone else is being literal too when they say "y'know Sim made some solid points"

They opt for different methods, sure, and they don't have legal authority in the same way the Cirinists did but if you can't see the parallels in the real world between the worship of Cirin and the attitude towards feminism and by extension political correctness.....

I think the problem is that people remember the Cirinists but they forget the Kevilists. When taken together, Sim has painted a pretty accurate picture of feminine political agency.

Yeah, sure, I'm totally worried about going on the run from those roving feminist death squads that are targeting me for execution.

Sim was right, women shouldn't be allowed to vote, huh?

>doubling down
Fuck off retard

Agreed, Kevilists seemed pretty chill too bee h

Well, no, that particular wave of feminists were justified, I think. Women are people too, but the modern feminists have gotten to the point where they're championing causes or pushing agendas that even other women think is bullshit. Pushing for women's rights in Saudi Arabia? Laudable, should be done. Telling everyone we need Sharia Law in America to protect women's rights to wear burkas? Completely backwards. Pushing for the glass ceiling to be broken in the workplace? A good thing. Complaining that women don't make as much as men based off of averages that fail to point out that the average is lower because women tend to take maternity leave or leave careers to raise children far more often than men do? Not so much.

>inb4 triggered tumblrfags

I think the problem with determining Sim's views is that Sim's views changed over time, yet somehow Sim isn't aware of this change.

For example, he used to love Jaka, but then
>For the first time [Cerebus] was able to see Jaka precisely as she was and as she is and as she always would be: a spoiled, myopic, insensitive, self-absorbed and self-important harlot princess.

Remember: A car doesn't have 2 steering wheels for 2 drivers, therefore women shouldn't have equal say in their own marriages.

>a car doesn't have two steering wheels

Uhh....what the fuck are you talking about? Your analogy is shit.

This is right on my part, I did forget the Kevilists.

>Sim's changing beliefs
Yeah, that's the most troubling part of the last bit of Cerebus imo. Sim literally retcons his own opinions and acts like the audience was dumb for not agreeing with his present self back when his past self believed something different.
>steering wheels
The car metaphor is retarded.
That's Sim's analogy. Read Tangent.

Scott Pilgrim
To most, it's 'lol, Scott's such a cool geek, I love Cera!'
They don't realize Scott is just about as bad as Gideon, and that he and Ramona are pretty awful people

I tried reading Cerebus, but after what felt like a couple hundred chapters (middle of High Society, I guess?) I realized I was bored out of my skull and I didn't give a fuck about any of the characters. Did I miss something, or should I just write it off as not my kind of thing?

I did read Tangent a few years ago when I read through Cerebus. I do not have a good memory for quotes, however. It is still a fairly retarded analogy; despite that I think his depiction of feminists was in essence fairly accurate.

If you don't think that some of the feminists would be alright with roving men-killing death squads you would be woefully wrong. The Cirinists were extremists who gained power; if for whatever reason feminist extremists gained power in the real world we would have similar occurrences. And they would be able to justify it based on the roving death squads in less civilized countries that kill women for minor offenses, or the Chinese gender-based infanticide policies

Cerberus is really really overrated. It's not about the characters ( they're terrible and underdeveloped) or the story ( the story basically gets abandoned) it's about the rants. if you like to read long rants the later stuff will be your bag, otherwise avoid it.

Remember, the US government created AIDS

>citing tanget over the text
Actually retard, don't fuck off, just kill yourself.

>The Cirinists were extremists who gained power
And that's exactly why the Kevilist/Cirinist connection is important to explore.
>Kevilists and Illusionists vie for control of Cerebus
>Cerebus turns on Kevilists, imprisons their leader
>Cerebus disappears
>Cirinism is what's left to take up leadership
Research any revolution in history and you'll see parallels.
>The essay explicitly stated to be Sim's "final and definitive word on gender" should be ignored
You're the only one coming off as a retard now.

>a schizophrenic's paranoid ramblings should be taken completely seriously

>Don't cite actual content from the comic or else you're a retard
>Don't cite actual content from the author or else you're a retard
So it's not anything specifically from Cerebus or specifically from Dave Sim which speaks specifically to you.

He's a prescient prophet because of your general sense of fear and unease regarding women and the potential for acts that they might maybe someday possibly conceivably theoretically commit.

That's a discussion for Sup Forums, not for Sup Forums.

I love how cerebus threads always attract five or six fans, a handful of interested anons, and one Dunning-Kruger, serial contrarian retard.

Is there any other comic as epic and passionate about religion and politics?

Everyone here circlejerks DC Rebirth as well, dude.

Scott Pilgrim is Reddit incarnate, go back
