So I want to get into DC, I've been manly a vertigo and Dark Horse Comics kind of guy, and I have heard that Rebirth has more or less been good. Do I need to read New 52 since Rebirth is the continuation?

New 52 was pretty garbage so I'm not sure how a continuation of it can be worth reading but I guess DC has to get good again at some point.
No
There's no such thing as a "clean" DC reboot. Unless you're starting in the silver age, you're not really starting at the beginning of anything. Start with Rebirth and branch out from there. Also I recommend solo character books over team books.
Read Batman and Justice League of the New 52, they're the only series worth reading of New 52 to be honest (it isn't worth reading through 3 issues of New 52 garbage so you know what one person is referencing in one panel in Rebirth etc.),
and maybe catch the last few volumes of Superman (they're not that great, but it sets up the storylines that happen in Rebirth)
For the most part Rebirth is just a jumping on point, and while there are a few things which will confuse new readers (like Super Lex being a hero), they will pretty much spoon feed you the prior information you need to know.
This reading order is kinda bad, but it is the best I've seen that has everything in it: docs.google.com
Remember, everything before the DC Rebirth Special is not apart of Rebirth, so it is just set up for Rebirth
you have a lot of great series on new 52. don't miss Aquaman, Batwoman, Justice League, Wonder Woman or Batman
Ignore this fag. New 52 JL was terrible and Batman was bland. New 52 was better than Rebirth.
Right now, just read the Rebirth stuff.
Once you're into it, read anything you liked in the New 52 and find out what was good.
Buddy, Aquaman and Demon Knights were so good.
>New 52 JL was terrible
It's better than JL Rebirth. Won't fight you on Batman though
Of the new52, the most Vertigo & Dark Horse series:
Dial H
Animal Man
Swamp Thing
Demon Knights gets a good rap, but I thought it was kinda silly.
Start with stuff that has limited interaction with the rest of the DCU like Starman V2 or Jonah Hex
>It's better than JL Rebirth.
That's not hard.
I think the best thing to do is forget about the new 52 and rebirth and all that jazz, and just read whatever seems interesting throughout the whole DC history. I started with reading some New 52 titles, about a year before DC You, by the time Rebirth had started, I realized New 52 shit was just shit and I should've read stuff from before that, to actually know and understand these characters and this universe. I've been doing that now for like a bit more than a year or so, and it's been an amazing journey. If you're familiar with some characters from the various DC cartoons, just go read the series of a character you're interested in, and that should be a good jumping on point.
If you want specific comic recs, as starting points, Giffen & DeMatteis' JL/JLI/JLA/JLE saga, Denny O'Neil's The Question, Jack Kirby's The Demon, Arnold Drake's Doom Patrol, Wolfman & Perez's New Teen Titans, Perez's Wonder Woman, Morrison's Animal Man, are great ongoings to start with. Also minis like DC: The New Frontier, Superman: American Alien, Arkham Asylum: Living Hell, Batman: Dark Moon Rising Duology, Shazam: The Monster Society of Evil, Superman/Shazam: First Thunder are great stuff to start with too.
>new Frontier
>mini
Wait- the original doom patrol is good?
>Rebirth has more or less been good
Rebirth is trash, my guy. Read the older stuff.
It's super-campy, because, well, it's silver age, but yeah it's really well written and fun to read. If it wasn't for fucking Kupperberg, no one would be saying shit like "just ignore Doom Patrol before Morrison".
user it's a six issue mini-series, what the fuck else am I supposed to call it?
Most comics in general you can mostly pick up from context clues important biz (like reading a fantasy novel and going "they're making a big deal of this Elf woman. She must be important. Oh she has 1 of 3 kinda special elf rings? Yep super big special elf there cool")
You COULD backtrack to beginning of N52 to get to know a series of characters you're enjoying better. But don't do it as a requirement that you HAVE to do, but as a thing you want to do.
New Superman
RHatO
if you want light reading
King's Batman if you want something to think about
OP; I urge you to follow this user's advice. There are countless much better stories in DC's archives than what is being put out in Rebirth.
I know Rebirth is the new thing and all, but there are several sites online where you'll find the older comics.
In fact, I think one of the biggest appeals of Rebirth is the fact that they keep referencing or paying tribute to those old stories they had basically scrapped during N52.
If you want to get into DC, the best way forward is backwards.
What's your favorite book with old or obscure characters? I read too much of the JL cast
Swamp Thing by Moore (he starts in issue #20, 21 I think)
Hellblazer by Ennis (Issue # 41 onwards)
The Spectre (Ostrander's run)
Then for something more fun, I would go with Hitman, hell of a fun ride, beginning to end (there are some interesing crossovers with JLA members)
Not him but:
>Animal Man, both Lemire and Morrison
>Star Man Volume 2
If you're used to Dark Horse and Vertigo, read Batman Rebirth, Aquaman, and Super Sons, that's as close to the same quality as possible.
What? Those are neither good, nor even the same tone.
Throne of Atlantis is gud tho
